Lone Working Personal Safety: A guidebook for health & social care workers
Lone Working Personal Safety: A guidebook for health & social care workers
by Gerard O'Dea
Edition: Paperback
Price: £11.84

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome contribution to a problem many managers wish they could ignore., 1 May 2014

The possibility of danger is one of the least recognised facets of delivering social care. Without over dramatising O'Dea takes the reader through the possible issues and risks.

What he describes as Mother Teressa syndrome is really common in social care workers and, more importantly their managers.

Believeing that leaving the office with good intentions will allow workers to walk alone and unharmed into places where others would go mob handed.

Lets remind ourselves that a social worker is actually more likely to end their working day in a body bag than a police officer.

Mr O'Dea sets out simple strategies that allow lone workers to realistically assess their situation. Recognise danger signs and always have an escape plan.

Whilst I have not met or done any training with Mr O'Dea I have trained with one of his associates.

This book is a really good introduction to the training that Dynamis offer, as well as other companies such as Dynamic Interventions.

This is an excellant first book and I'm sure Percy will write lots more, I look forward to reading the next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best in it's field, 13 April 2013

This will become a "must read" for anyone who faces dangerous situations in work. It sets out a systemic case that takes the reader through: types of agression, human responses to agression, how to handle diferent situations and get out alive.

I have worked for many years in social care settings where being exposed to threats of violence is a regular event. It continues to suprise me that so many social care staff have so little idea / aptitude when it comes to dealing with these dangerous situations. What is more concerining is the type of training offered that is often way off what people need.

I attended one of Dr Bournes 2 day courses and quickly concluded that this was someone who was talking from experience, this book confirms him as one of the best trainers out there. If you are a training commisioner, I would have Iain Bourne and Impact training high on my list of contractors.

I would particulalry commend the sections on descalation - that is about the best written description of how to handle explosive situations I have read.

Treating Huckleberry Finn: A New Narrative Approach to Working with Kids Diagnosed ADD/ADHD (Psychology)
Treating Huckleberry Finn: A New Narrative Approach to Working with Kids Diagnosed ADD/ADHD (Psychology)
by David Nylund
Edition: Paperback
Price: £23.15

5.0 out of 5 stars A supposed epidemic, 20 Jun 2012

If some medics are to be believed we are in the grip of a epidemic of ADHD one that requires a huge bill for drugs that they also ask us to believe work.

David Nyland starts off by looking at the case of Huck Finn and how he would probably be medicated if he were around today.

David skilfuly works in a technique for managing ADHD that is not reliant on the chemical cosh.

For those of us who are not sold on the idea of chemical medcine for juvenille problems this is a very welcome book.

The Forgotten Poisoner, the life and crimes of Hélène Jégado
The Forgotten Poisoner, the life and crimes of Hélène Jégado
Price: £1.91

4.0 out of 5 stars A little known tale, 20 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A little known, one might even say unknown tale in the UK, Helen Jegado poisoned her way across Brittany in the 1830-50's leaving behind her a trail of bodies and a really Amazing failure by experts to spot the obvious.

It does not seem entirely clear exactly how many fell victim to her trail of murder sometimes individuals sometimes whole families wiped out by this serial posoner active at a time when forensics and pathology were in their infancy.

You do end up slightly concerned, despite her probable guilt, her trial was more circus than court of law with "evidence" introduced that should have been torn to shreds or simply thrown out had the defence been allowed and able to call half the witnesses they would have wished to use. Her defence lawyer finished with an impassioned and possibly justified case that she was not in fact in full possesion of her faculties. A modern forensic psychiatrist might have drawn sginificant conclusions from the traumas of her early life and more telling her early mal tratement of animals.

This is probably an early case of what we would today call a psychopath and treat in a wholy diferent way, the young defence lawyers best oratory could not send her to the asylum so she suffered public execution instead.

A classic case of an older more experienced prosecutor with all the cards stacked on his side winning over a younger defence lawyer dealt an impossible hand and expected to play it with half the support he had hoped for not allowed to turn up and several defence experts sounding like they had been "got at" before they went into court.

An interestig well written read by a Welsh writer far better known in his adopted Brittany than his native Wales.

This is THE book to have in the reference corner if you come across psychoactive substances and medications in the course of your work.

Technical but not impossibly so it condenses thousands of research studies into few lines and explains the finding s concisely.

Now includes common natural and herbal medcines.

Truly an excellent book and keep alert for forthcoming updates.

I just bought the new edition and it's as good as expected.

This is an excellant guide to managing very dificult behaviour. The authour consistantly uses examples of non challenging innovative approaches to managing situations.
Crucially, the authors acknowledge that the true therapeutic work actually happens outside of their offices and see their role as supporting and enabling the day to day carers to deliver the therapeutic package that meets the young persons needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellant anthology, 26 Dec 2001
This review is from: Y Baledi (Audio CD)
This is a selection of Meic's work charting over 30 years in the business. As such it draws from his early classics from the 60's and you hear his style mature and the songs change as the years pass. If you were only to buy one Meic Stevens CD this should be the one.
