Heavy Weather Cruising
Heavy Weather Cruising
by Tom Cunliffe
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Cunliffe at his best, 14 Mar. 2014

This review is from: Heavy Weather Cruising (Paperback)
It's no wonder I have more than a few of this guy's books. They are simple, straightforward and full of common sense, but always injected with a degree of his characteristic humour. The old black-and-white photographs could have be a bit clearer, but at the end of the day, it's the advice in the book that's the important part!

Erchie: My Droll Friend
Erchie: My Droll Friend
by Neil Munro
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable social history, 19 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Knowing Munro only through the more popular Para Handy Tales, Erchie Macpherson appeared to be less comic, more mundane, got on with his day-to-day life with his faithful wife 'Jinnet', who fills the role of the 'wee wifie' to perfection. As the stories advance in time, from the start of the 20th century and spread over the next 20-odd years, what emerges becomes a documented social history of the city of Glasgow, and indeed the whole of Scotland, seen through the eyes of Munro's hero. His position as a professional waiter, working at corporate dinners, often in the City Chambers, allows Erchie to catch snippets of gossip, scandal and less interesting political comment, which he can then relate to his wife, and to his pal, Duffy, the coalman, adding his own personal comment. And it's all in a broad 'Gleska' accent, that requires regular use of the notes at the back of the book, even for a Glaswegian.
So Erchie sees the changes in his world, the advent of gas lighting, the change from horse-drawn transport to electric tramcars, the political scene leading up to, and through the Great War. The effect on the common man of Daylight Saving, changes to the Licensing Laws, everything elicits an opinion, often in a gentle, comic manner from our hero.
This is a great compilation of tales that has kept a smile on my face from beginning to end!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure dead brilliant!, 28 Nov. 2013

Bought for my son to hang in his first car. He's delighted with them. They are small enough not to be obtrusive, yet bright enough to catch the eye when the car's parked, which I'm sure, being a proud Scot, is his intention!

Jim's annual update is now a fixture on my shopping list. The continuing perception and humour of the author after tasing and re-tasting so much whisky, leaves me breathless!

1.0 out of 5 stars What a joke!, 21 Jun. 2013
No way would I buy this piece of rubbish. It's called British History Ruler, but it's a very poor attempt at a record of an ENGLISH history ruler. It was on my Recommended for you list - "Recommended because you said you owned Pyrex Glass Bowl, 1.0L" I'm off to work that one out!
As to the ruler itself - 1017-1066 Danish Rule? And prior to that, 613-1017 Division into Kingdoms? What a cop-out! The House of Wessex, including Athelstan and his descendants, don't qualify (as there isn't enough room to squeeze them in!)!
And what happened to the rulers of an independant Wales, and an independant scotland before they took over the 'British' crown?

Reeds PBO Small Craft Almanac 2013 (Reed's Almanac)
Reeds PBO Small Craft Almanac 2013 (Reed's Almanac)

5.0 out of 5 stars It is what it is, 14 Mar. 2013

An annual Almanac which includes all the tidal tables and associated info. for the cruising sailor. Slightly less coverage than the full Almanac - Denmark to the Gironde as opposed to down to the Azores, but if that's the area you sail, it saves a few quid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value, 14 Mar. 2013

After the unexpected surprise of self-assembly, this glass turns out to be an honest, optically sound and sturdily made bit of kit. It isn't of the premium quality, and doesn't pretend to be, but you can spend a lot more and get a lot less. Very happy with this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly efficient!, 13 Feb. 2013

Fed up with grinding my fingertips off, so opted for this compact acrylic grinder rather than an open grater-style one. On my first testing of it, holding it my in left hand and operating it with my right, I spun the handle round, and was dismayed to feel no resistance at all - I expected to have to exert a tiny bit of effort at least, after all nutmegs are quite hard little things.
But I was delighted, when I put it down, to find my left palm full of grated nutmeg. Excellent! I'd recommend this to anyone!

I had a 12-jar rack for many years, and being an enthusiastic amateur cook, always experimenting, I needed more jars, so purchased a 15-jar rack as well. 12 months on, and the need for storage returns, so had to have this one. I use it as a freestanding rack, adjacent to my hob and it's almost full already. Just make sure it fits the space available, especially heightwise!

I needed some cases as a DVD case had broken (the 'spindle' in the centre had a lug which snapped off). These appeared to be the cheapest option, fact 'cheap as chips'!
When they arrived i was amused that they were an exact replacement of the original item. And I have plenty of spares for the future!
