2.0 out of 5 stars Even worse than the first one., 2 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought both this and the first book of the series at the same time. Having dragged myself through the first one some time ago, I tried to do the same with this. Unfortunately this is worse than the first effort. The writing is infantile; of "the cat sat on the mat" variety and very tiresome. Other reviews praise the plot, I could not get far enough into this book to discover the plot as it is so slow to commence, the author preferring to pad out the book with irrelevant information and excessive descriptions. The dialogue is ridiculous and the descriptions so simple it is almost insulting to the reader. Even more than the first book this effort makes me appreciate what it must be like for teachers of English having to wade through the offerings of 14 year old students who are trying to come to grips with the art of descriptive writing, putting words on paper just for the sake of doing so and because they have been set a target number of words to write. Sorry but this is not a book I can recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed, 14 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Unfortunately the story resembled an essay written by an intelligent 17 year old rather than a book produced by a professional novelist. The stereotypical group of friends were predictable and lifeless and whilst the story moved along, it stuttered rather than flowed. All in all however it was OK but even at 99p I would not recommend it to anyone. Realising that a publisher found this good enough to produce in volume does give hope to all those who feel they "have at least one book in them" which is a shame because the plot was good and the descriptions of Glasgow engaging if not a trifle irrelevant and self indulgent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Next stop Galicia!, 26 Mar. 2011

A wonderful, well written, entertaining and informative book brimming with humour and social comment. Living in Spain I am always keeping an eye open for books that enhance the enjoyment I get from exploring my adopted country which this certainly does. Easy to read in bite size portions the author obviously enjoys the culture, food and people of Galicia and in treating the subjects with great empathy encourages one to share his obvious enjoyment. The book provides an excellent practical guide to the culture and cuisine of Galicia along with some very interesting and educational social history of the region and while the book is about "pig" and is true to that subject, it is a pity that there was not room to include more about the wonderful seafood available in Galicia.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one Spanish recipe book then this is it., 31 Oct. 2010

Great things come in small packages and this exciting little book from someone who has a wide experience of and obviously appreciates Spanish culture and cuisine is no exception, making one want to prepare each recipe straight after reading it. The wonderfully varied and very tasty recipes are well presented, easy to follow and therefore made simple to prepare. So far I have prepared many, never yet having been disappointed. The author whets the appetite with description, encourages us to follow easy and well laid out instructions and then dares us to deviate and develop our own style. Most of the recipes are quick to assemble and even those that are more complicated are explained so well that they become easily achievable. Each recipe has a story explaining the history and culture behind it; often presenting alternative options for both preparation and ingredients, offering an opportunity to expand and experiment. The book describes a Spanish cuisine far from the the tourist traps and in doing so provides insight to Spanish culinary culture. Useful and interesting reference material about the ingredients such as regional differences, local varieties and seasonal availability is provided in abundance as is how these factors define local cuisines. The what, when, why, where and how of each recipe and it's components are described in a manner so prosaic, educational and easy to understand that it makes the book an enjoyable read as much as an instruction manual outlining how to prepare a considered collection of classic recipes. I have many recipe books for Spanish food; this is without doubt the best so far and as a by product also acts as a very handy restaurant guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome, Pat on the back for self!, 17 Sept. 2010
Shall I or shall I not? To Deluxe or not to deluxe? Stanley Road Deluxe; great but nothing special. In the end the lure of getting a second CD for not a lot of money was too great. After a minor fall out with the other half withdrew to the shed to pack a few more boxes (we are moving house). Listened to Wake Up The Nation for the first time. Abolutely brilliant. Short sharp excellent examples of just what Weller is. Everything is there. Every creation, mood, influence, style, mode, arrangement Paul Weller has ever experienced and provided for us to enjoy and wonder at is there. This is the culmination of everything Paul Weller has been to date but it is absolutely original, not just churning out the same old crap as too many do today but building on all that has gone before. Absolutely brilliant Paul Weller as we all love him. The pinnacle of his career; or so I thought.
The second disk is without question one of the greatest musical creations I have ever experienced. I still cannot believe what I hear. Argument forgotten I rushed into the kitchen..... What do you think of this then? I enthusiastically enquired of one who is no mug when it comes to Weller. It's awesome was the reply. Who is it then? I asked. No idea, sounds like an upbeat remixed Paul Weller. Exactly what it is. This is Weller being Weller; using everything he has and then encompassing modern beats, electronica, vocals, mixes and techniques to produce something that is a musical milestone. Dubstep with raw aggression, The Jam gone electronica, The Style Council with melodious backing, Weller truly embracing every musical style and using every device available to produce the Michelin 5 star album. (Yes I know Michelin only gives 4 that is why I say 5) No Tears To Cry (Leo Zero Remix) has everything; but all the tracks do so ......... There really is nothing much else to say except that the second disk could be released as a stand alone. Anybody who declines to add Wake Up The Nation to their collection is missing a treat. Is it "Mixers using great source material to produce masterpieces or is it Weller using modern mixes to make his stuff even better? Half full or half empty; same result different explanation: who cares? Everyone who enjoys music of any description should beg steal or borrow; maybe even buy, the Deluxe edition for it is the deluxe bit that epitomises Weller and really is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Outstanding; a must for every cook., 24 Mar. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My word, how lucky was I to buy this book to add to my collection in which it now has pride of place?
If you live in Spain and cook it is essential; if you shop anywhere for fresh food it is essential and if you enjoy cooking it will give you enormous pleasure. If you shop in markets in Spain for fresh food that you are then going to cook it is biblical!
Well laid out with a preface to each section wonderfully describing the type of food in the recipes therein and where in Spain specialises in the ingredients. Each recipe is well written, easy to understand and has a picture so you know what it should look like. That in itself is recommendation enough for any collection of recipes: in this wonderful book Jenny Chandler goes further. For each recipe where a new main ingredient is introduced there is advice as to how to purchase that ingredient: how to ensure fish is fresh, which cut of meat to use and how to obtain it, how to select vegetables in prime condition; the list is endless. Each recipe also has tips on alternative ingredients and little shortcuts.
For those living in Spain there are descriptions of the specialities provided by each region and the verbal illustrations of the various markets where they can be purchased leave the reader salivating.
A really special book that promises much and delivers on those promises. If nothing else it is a wonderful, well researched guide to the local markets in Spain. It is a book that everyone deserves to own.
I really "get what the author is about" as I live in a place in Spain where the fresh catch from the fishing boats is sold to the public daily at 4.00pm, a small covered market operates daily (mainly for meat) and the weekly market, full of fresh fruit and vegetables, flavoured olives and other pickled items is a place where cheeses, pulses, charcuterie and local specialities abound.

5.0 out of 5 stars What else is there to say., 19 Mar. 2010
This review is from: Deuce (Audio CD)
I bought the original album in about 1976, that the music of Rory Gallagher endures is not at all surprising. Blues that can be both raw and mellow; there are few guitar players who so effortlessly manage to make the instrument perform to its limit. I have copied the original vinyl to MP3 and am not sure the advantage of purchasing the CD although I really would recommend anyone who loves music should acquire this. His death was a great loss but in Deuce Gallagher left a wonderful legacy.

Was skiing in Italy and staying at an hotel that was strange to say the least. The bar had an enormous screen and sound system. The owner played some great music DVDs and this was one. WOW! It is a wonderful collection of C&W artists performing some great songs at a concert in tribute to Johnny Cash. One of the standouts is Wyclef Jean, truly magnificent and very out the norm. This will appeal to all music fans and would recommend it strongly especially as music DVDs are not usually my thing.
