Psychiatry on the Move (MOTM)
Psychiatry on the Move (MOTM)
by Molly Douglas
Edition: Paperback
Price: £19.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good for the format, 19 Jun 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This subspecialty is actually very good for the format with various conditions laid out and serving well as an aide memoir for various traits for diagnosis. As always, this is to provide a framework, and is a lot easier to digest than the relevant Oxford handbook. That said, a lightly higher level is required for the MRCPsych so have a secondary reference at hand.

The online resource is pretty good but not as invaluable as other entries.

Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Women's Health on the Move (MOTM)

Edition: Paperback
Price: £23.52

4.0 out of 5 stars Student level, although nice on call resource, 19 Jun 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
O&G is one of those hybrid specialties for trainees where there is a lot of patient contact interspersed with theatre duties. The former is covered well up to and including the red flags and case studies. Your mileage on the ward round grilling may vary, and the secrets series is invaluable. Seek your prep for the latter elsewhere

The online resources are very good and it is worth the RRP to have it on your mobile device.

4.0 out of 5 stars Drier than the rest but consider the data!, 19 Jun 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is one of the drier offerings but this is due to the subject matter involved. All the more reason to presevere, although I do know that some folks might absorb it easier from other sources, just the way statistics and geometry texts are a matter of perception. Adjust accordingly and consider returning to this for just the practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gem of the series, 19 Jun 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is one of the gems of the series with clear explanations in laying down the framework for revision. I would strongly advise doing the relevant sections as they are covered by teacher in school so that there is reinforcement. This also allows the effort to be consistently matched with the standard expected rather than the demand for instant perfection (keep this steady course and the kid will get there)

Humorous concepts are incorporated to alleviate the tedium. Just as you thought you got rid of clippy from MS office....

5.0 out of 5 stars SAT buster- great practice and learning aid., 19 Jun 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The SAT exams for year 6 and equivalent usually cause some degree of consternation and bemusement. Your kid will either be well equipped or not and "not" means some trouble. But being an exam, what is the level of difficulty should you prepare your child for? A quick glance at this will let you adjust your expectations accordingly

Individual sections are well covered (by the old name of arithmetic, fractions and decimals) There are four practice tests at the end. There are no answer sections but this should not be an issue (can you imagine your kid wondering about your ability) . There are a number of humourous aids to take the pressure off young minds in the learning sections.

Tacwise Z1-140 Staple Gun. Staple Gun Tacker
Tacwise Z1-140 Staple Gun. Staple Gun Tacker
Price: £11.37

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good layout and design, 19 Jun 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Nice heft and comfortable to use, this is a step up from the generic staple guns. The finish and window allowing you to see the feed are really nice touches and you can see how this is the better product, especially for prolonged use (ie putting up plastic membrane) The target line is VERY helpful for the uninitiated and should help you hit the job running.

The item comes with a supply of 6mm staples which just fit nicely (so don't go loading bigger) There were absolutely no duds a part from 2 in the first five due to my getting the feel of the gun.

Highly recommended

The Flying Man
The Flying Man

4.0 out of 5 stars One weirdly distorted Forest Gump., 19 Jun 2014

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Charting the life of a gambler, con man and cad, Maquil is oddly compelling as the protagonist- not quite the anti-hero, more like the naughty boy you cheer on in his mischief. There is an element of pandering the Western airs in casting off the social conventions of his upbringing in Pakistan but as he moves through a slightly more complicated life- I couldn't but help wonder was he better off as was depicted.

Slightly disorientating as it is written in present tense, I suddenly realised that it was a nice tool to view Maquil as a contemporary. Nicely written, and I never thought I would derive as much interest from the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars A perspective of anthropology through video communication, 19 Jun 2014
This review is from: Webcam (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This book is not for the faint hearted. The authors are fond of their anthropological jargon but there is a pretty good fist of explaining this within the context if this presentation. The problem is that when you link certain concepts whose tenets are hard to grasp, there is more than head scratching involved.

Let me put it simply, if you think about the philosophy of self and how we communicate with others there are a number of social communication conventions observed. This book focuses on throwing in the modern dynamic of webcam communication ie through skype and other video communication. Those initial conventions get modified and in some cases warped. Its a good enough exposition but obviously more rewarding to those au fait with the ideas.

Unwrapped Sky

4.0 out of 5 stars Technopunk and other stuff!, 19 Jun 2014
This review is from: Unwrapped Sky (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a heck of an outing for the imagination. Keeping it together is done by attention to detail and exercise in world building. There is a level of concentration and devotion involved for the reader, but for fans, this is well rewarded. Indeed the Minotaur mythology side of things was for me, the most fascinating aspect of the book rather than the technology.

Part of the author Caeli-Amur's timeline put forward in his previous short story anthology.

Memory of Water
Memory of Water
by Emmi Itäranta
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £8.96

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely title for a well written tale., 19 Jun 2014
This review is from: Memory of Water (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A nice sci fi book embracing two concepts, a dystopia as a result of global warming and freshwater is scarce. A coming of age story where a young girl must meet adult responsibilities, and a apprentice tea master must reach mastery without her mentor.

The culture clash between China and a Scandinavian confederation is well written, and the occupation evokes real life tales just by the emotional claustrophobia and tension vividly written.

Its actually easy to see how this book won the awards listed by weaving all these threads together. Yes the prose can be a bit longwinded and jars with the taut passages, but this is well written and well read.
