4.0 out of 5 stars Works well. You may want to factor in a Gigabit switch depending on scenario., 23 Feb 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a nice product which makes use of the Gigabit capability if you have it. I know from experience that the difference in real life to the average user is minimal in terms of internet streaming (compared to a 300-500Mbps homeplug under ideal conditions) but where it comes into its own is the increasing use of NAS drives and home servers.

I found it easy to pair and it worked well. It was a toss up between Router-switch-homeplug or Router-Homeplug-switch and I settled for the latter just to have more access to ports. A switch is probably essential in this scenario unless you want to load up on plugs.

The plugs themselves ran warm but not unbearably so, they were silent compared to the soft whirring of the switch's. The usual caveats apply on the result being dependent on wiring, and make sure the plugs are on the same circuit in the house (larger ones may have two or more.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended strongly for 10/100 networks. 5 ports for two plugs!, 23 Feb 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
5 ethernet 10/100 connections in two rooms is what you get out of the box. It is very easy to follow the instructions and get the functionality, I gratefully read through most of the other experiences outlined in the reviews and managed to get through the installation process painlessly. The indicator lights are a reassuring feature although I wonder if a status light for each port (like TP Link's switch offerings) would add to the ease of monitoring.

The speed is measurably faster than my old homeplugs (300Mbps) or wi-fi which I suppose allows the extra devices to be supported comfortably, I have a growing number of devices that require wired connection to the home network and this comes in very useful. Furthermore there is a sense of increased reliability on the connection in terms of outages and "hanging".

The usual caveats apply. Make sure the plugs are on the same main circuit (larger houses may have two or more). It is best to do a fresh pairing if you are adding a third homeplug. A power failure also may require a hard reset of pairing.

I would recommend this very strongly if you do not need Gigabit speeds.

Case Logic SnapView Folio for 8.0 inch Galaxy Tab 3 - Anthracite
Case Logic SnapView Folio for 8.0 inch Galaxy Tab 3 - Anthracite
Price: £29.15

4.0 out of 5 stars Consider this for a an 8 inch Tab 3.0 case., 23 Feb 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a great case for the 8 inch Galaxy tab 3. It is lined on the outside with what feels like hard wearing fabric and the case itself seems well built when the tablet is snapped into the plastic frame on the inside of the back cover. This belies its flimsy looking appearance straight out of the packaging, mainly due to flappy front cover.

The flappy cover is simple in design with the generic folds that allow various manipulations to raise the tablet in landscape mode to various heights when placed on a flat surface. Great for video and most mobile websites and increases the pleasure invaluably. The Tab's (and most androids' 16:9 dimensions) don't lend to natural reading of documents. This reader personally feels portrait mode is more comfortable. The cover of course, visually and functionally protects that all important screen.

Being thin and light, it doesn't add too much heft to the Tab 3.0 (which can be too thin and light on its own). I would say it gives more area to hold and manipulate the tablet. I would say that it is a great case for folks with a moderately to large budget. The subtraction of one star is for the RRP as well as the generic nature of the case and its folding mechanism.

Burma/Myanmar: What Everyone Needs to Know
Burma/Myanmar: What Everyone Needs to Know
by David Steinberg
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.79

4.0 out of 5 stars Dry but suited to Q&A format. Acquainting yourself with Myanmar in bite sized chunks, 22 Feb 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The Q&A style of the book is a redeeming feature when the author's dry but knowledgeable delivery is considered. There is an element of being at odds with the rich and vibrant culture as well as tumultuous history. Done this way, everything is in bite sized chunks. The layout of the questions are loosely based on the theme of the chapter, and quite a lot of ground is covered. This approach runs into difficulties mainly in historical and chronological matters, but really suits things like geography, religion and culture.

My view of this is that for the uninitiated, it is like having an expert on the subject answering questions that you wouldn't even know to ask. For the more knowledgeable, its a great way of reacquainting yourself with Myanmar that has been through great changes.

GSA Pro Golf GPS Putt Analyser - Black
GSA Pro Golf GPS Putt Analyser - Black

Price: £189.95

3.0 out of 5 stars Pricey for what it does but does it very well., 20 Feb 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Pretty good start by making it simple:

1) apply the small GSA unit to the butt end putter grip in the little air hole.,
2) download the free GSA app from Google play,
3) pair the GSA with Bluetooth

It charges by USB

I was impressed with the playback animation and there is something to be said about having instant feedback on missed putts. My concern would be the tendency to look up at the screen every time you made a putt, which ruins the putting routine you want to bring out to the course.

I had no difficulties with pairing to my android devices (taking the care to "forget" the previous pairing every time I used a new one) on Android 4.1 and higher (Galaxy S3 on 4.3, Asus MemoPad on 4.2, Nexus 7 2012 on 4.4)

My impression is that it is very pricey for what it does but if you are a data cruncher, it helps. I would also strongly recommend only looking at the Android screen on bad putts, and reinforce the feel and tempo of good putts. Its that simple, which makes me sadly wonder again about whether the price is justified. There are a number of similar android swing trainers that have a putting facility.

4.0 out of 5 stars It works great., 20 Feb 2014

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
From the USB charging to the plug and play capability, to the size and ease of use on the course, I was very very happy at the end of my trial run. On my home course, I was able to go out on the tee, get it to acquire location and it immediately told me the distance to the hole. I could activate the unit by pressing the the centre button to give me yardage.. If i skipped a hole. I just pressed the + button to move on. Pressing and holding the centre button activates the shot yardage facility from where you intend to hit. The volume can be adjusted for wind and the acceptance of your playing partners. Accuracy was to withing 5 yards.

My only gripe was that there is a certain course that has shared tees which momentarily caused it confusion.

Against my Garmin S1 unit, the only con was not being able to measure yardage to a hazard. I tried to be smart and use the shot yardage facility and walk to the hazard but that has its disadvantages of time and effort.

But the size, ease of use and ability to hold charge compared to the Garmin are pluses.

Its a lovely little package if you do not want an all singing all dancing GPS unit. Indeed, it can be less distracting to allow you to focus on hitting that club smooth to the planned yardage.

Statistical Methods for Hospital Monitoring with R (Statistics in Practice)
Statistical Methods for Hospital Monitoring with R (Statistics in Practice)
by Anthony Morton
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £50.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Specialist field, apparently a very good manual and resource, 20 Feb 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Hospital monitoring in R is one for the specialists and in speaking with a number coordinators for my facility, drew some blank looks. However the audit department found it very useful as they were looking for statistical tools and were considering R. That I spoke with a person with programming experience at the end tells what a specialised field it is.

Firstly its a programming package. this book has great references and collections of coding examples. Tweaking these for some instances is akin to modifying an excel formula to let it function for you in another scenario for which it intended. I know for certain that letting the specialist perused the book made him very excited and he advised me that he is getting his own copy to see how feasible using R is.

A2-Level Maths for Edexcel - Core 3: Student Book
by CGP Books
Edition: Paperback
Price: £11.19

4.0 out of 5 stars Covers algebra, trigonometry exponentials, differentiation and numerical methods., 20 Feb 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
You need Core 1 and Core 2 to complete the syllabus and the knowledge covered in those two cores to grasp these further concepts. The online resources is all essential here, especially some of these concepts are difficult to grasp without actual teaching. The CDROM contains the practice papers and worked examples. This is the pinnacle of the maths exam difficulty so demonstration of all the knowledge is required. I have personally felt that if you started this book from "scratch" to revise, you haven't gained its full benefit.

Good luck to the candidate.

4.0 out of 5 stars A coffee table book or one for the book shelf., 20 Feb 2014
This review is from: Orla Kiely Home (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I enjoyed this book immensely but would like to say that conceptually designing and providing a theme for a room would not work in my life and made me feel I was looking at an ikea catalog. That being said, there are some very inspiring pictures that I am mentally filing away for the dream home when the kids move away....

I would recommend this for the person who has an interest in interior design. There is a lot to like but for the average person, a bit impractical unless it be in a very small dose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great resource., 20 Feb 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a wonderful continuation of the series. Please note however that you will need the other sections like statistics to get the deeper coverage of the area.

I would recommend getting this book as the candidate chooses to take up the subject for the exam and allow them to learn with the book. I do feel that the vast area cover makes it seem more like concise than the other maths offerings from CGP and in this area, the provided CD-ROM is all important.
