Klondike [DVD]
Dvd ~ Richard Madden
Price: £7.71

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic Drama in the Yukon Mountains, 16 Dec 2014

This review is from: Klondike [DVD] (DVD)
This top quality 6 part mini series from The Discovery Channel is
well worth watching. Directed by Simon Cellan Jones with Ridley
Scott as Executive Producer, this is the story of both men and women
who tried to seek their fortunes in the Yukon territory of Canada
during the 1890's.

Richard Madden plays the part of Bill Haskell a young graduate who
along with his boyhood friend Byron Epstein (Augustus Prew) walks
out of his graduation ceremony to seek his fortune in Gold.
The story is played out amidst the majestic and often cruel backdrop
of the Yukon mountains. It is man versus nature, man versus man and
for one man, the character of Bill Haskell, finding the inner strength
to keep some sense of loyalty and morality amidst the morass
of greed, murder and disease (Typhus) in lawless Dawson City. We see
him pal up with a young Jack London (Johnny Simmons) who went on to
become a great writer with such books as White Fang.
Bill loses his best friend to murder, has a bittersweet relationship
with Belinda Mulrooney (Abbie Cornish) along the way, and ultimately
survives the rigours of a gold prospectors life with "a head full
of hope".
Based on the book, Gold Diggers by Charlotte Gray, this is as pretty
much true to the life and times of the era that a film crew can
create in the rain and snow of reality, and Richard Madden played his
heart out in this role, creating a thoroughly believable character,
I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Released 2013. Runs for approximately 270 minutes,
with a short feature on the making of the series.
DVD on 2 discs.

Forty Years on: BBC Radio 4 Full Cast Dramatisation (BBC Radio Collection)
Forty Years on: BBC Radio 4 Full Cast Dramatisation (BBC Radio Collection)
by Alan Bennett
Edition: Audio CD
Price: £13.25

5.0 out of 5 stars Alan Bennett at his best., 14 Dec 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I purchased this double CD Audiobook to replace an old and much
loved earlier copy which I had on audio-cassette. The original
radio production starred the late Sir John Gielgud, in the role
of the Headmaster.
The product on sale here has a new cast, with Alan Bennett himself
taking the role of Head.

Set in a fictional public school, Albion House, this is a play
within a play and covers the two world wars.
It is funny, tongue in cheek and wistful, with comments typical
of headmasters that I have known.
"Remember, this is a school play, your not here
to enjoy yourselves."

The cast includes Alan Bennett, Robert Bathurst, Adam Godley and
Eleanor Bron, with boys from Kings College School, Wimbledon.
This is a BBC Radio 4 production originally broadcast in August
2 CD's total playing time 105 minutes.

For students of drama and older folk who remember the era,
this is well worth listening to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Quality Caps., 5 Dec 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These men's, eight-panel Newsboy flat caps from the Hawkins Country Collection
are good quality products and reasonably priced.

Available in three sizes: 58cm / 59cm / 60cm.

They are made from a tweed wool and acrylic blend of material,
well stitched and come in several colours, I choose the Orange-
Green-Brown tweed mix.

Comfortable fit, with a press stud, open-close peak and can be
worn with the press stud peak open for those with a fuller
head of hair. Looks quite stylish.
The daughter of a neighbour wears one at a rakish angle and looks
good in it, so I would say that it is suitable for both genders.
I purchased mine from Hey Hey Twenty a Norfolk company based in
North Walsham, who sells here on Amazon UK.

A great alternative to the cheese-cutter style flat cap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good System for a Small Home, 23 Nov 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having recently down sized and living in a bungalow, I required
a CD system that was ideal for a small living room and I have
not been disappointed with this Panasonic product which I bought
on Amazon via Southern Electric.

It plays standard CD's 8cm or 12cm and I can record to MP3 should
I wish to. This model has an 3.5mm headphone jack and I find it
ideal to listen to with wireless headphones when working in another
room. This comes as a purely 'stand alone' CD system and has no
sockets for external attachments other than headphones.

The speakers come in black with the main system being fronted in a
silver effect, quite smart.

For the price, which included free delivery this was a good buy.
Very pleased.

Havamal: The Sayings of the Vikings
Havamal: The Sayings of the Vikings
by Lorenz Frolich
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars The Wisdom of the North- Old Norse Sayings., 23 Nov 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Havamal or Words of the High One, is a collection of sayings
attributed to the Norse god Odin, or Woden.
It is written as advice from the chief Viking God, Odin, to us mere
mortals. The original poems were preserved in the Icelandic Codex
Regius an ancient manuscript of Poetic Edda or old Norse poems in
the keeping of the Icelandic state museum library,

Some historians argue over whether it originated in Norway or was
written in Iceland as simple pithy sayings on how to conduct one's
life as a Viking. The verses are meant to build self belief and are
rooted in common sense and the value of the individual, containing
both wisdom and humour. The sort of things that would be handed
down as folk wisdom during the long dark winter nights in the long-
house or repeated to one's children to instill a sense of belonging
and group identity.

One verse titled, "Everyone Has His Use" is quite poignant.

The lame rides a horse
the maimed drives the herd
the deaf is brave in battle.
A man is better
blind than buried.
A dead man is deft at nothing.

This edition is of 96 pages, translated from the original Icelandic
by Bjorn Jonasson. Published 1992.

Massacre at Mountain Meadows
Massacre at Mountain Meadows
by Ronald W. Walker
Edition: Paperback
Price: £11.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Mountain Meadows: nearer the truth., 17 Nov 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is for the hardcover edition of the Massacre at Mountain Meadows: An
American Tragedy, which was perpetrated by a group of Mormons with the aid of a
few Paiute Native Americans on 9/11/1857 in Utah Territory.

Written by 3 highly respected Mormon/LDS historians, in an attempt to create a candid
and fresh open look at the horrific massacre, the authors have used diaries, journals
and previously unavailable documents to arrive at what they consider to be as near
to the truth as will ever be established over 150 years after the event.

The Baker-Fancher wagon train was travelling through Southern Utah from Arkansas bound
for a new life in California.
Having been promised safe passage by local Mormon settlers, the immigrant wagon train
was set upon and 120 men, women and children were murdered in cold blood, only those
children under 8 years of age were spared, some 17 in number. Their wagons, animals and
chattels stolen by the Mormon community and the remaining infants "adopted" by a few
Mormon families. The infants were eventually returned to their state of origin some
years later as teenagers.

As an earlier writer, Juanita Brooks stated in her 1950 book on the same subject, "this
is a ghost which will not be laid to rest". The authors have researched this stain on
Mormon history as far as is possible, but it reads like an apologetic in some places,
only one man, John D Lee was brought to justice and later executed for this atrocity,
others simply got away with murder.

The book lists both the perpetrators and the victims, and has copious notes of primary
and secondary source material with a full index.
Published by the Oxford University Press in 2008.

I rate the book 5 stars, but hate the Amazon idea that five stars means "I Love it".
How can one "love" something that relates to mass murder?
Nevertheless, it is a book well worth reading.

Otley Through Time
Otley Through Time

Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.60

5.0 out of 5 stars The Changing Face of a Wharfedale Town, 14 Nov 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Otley Through Time (Paperback)
Otley Through Time: is a quality publication of photographs, past and present
from the Otley Museum and Archive Trust collection of pictorial memorabilia
spanning over 100 years, and gives a unique "Then and Now" look at the town.

For this reviewer, now living in the South of England, this recent purchase
is a trip down memory lane and a look back to the town of my birth and early
childhood memories and comes as a welcome addition to the nostalgia corner
of my book collection.

We have photographs of All Saints, parish church dating from the 13th century,
the church where Thomas Chippendale the renowned cabinet maker and furniture
designer was baptised.
Evocative street names such as Kirkgate, Bondgate, Boroughgate and Clapgate
still feature in the life of this old Anglo-Saxon town.
Dr. Beeching may have closed the railway line in 1965 and the Sammy Ledgard
and West Yorkshire buses may have given way to First bus,
but despite the unavoidable changes, Otley folk still retain a strong sense of
civic pride and stability in an ever changing world.

Printed on quality paper, this book captures the old town in black and white/
sepia shots with the contrasting newer street view pictures in colour.
Stuart Pickersgill and Andrew Beason along with the Otley Museum's many volunteers
have produced a little gem and welcome addition to the history of this wonderful
little Wharfedale town.
Published 2013.

Reasonable Doubt [DVD]
Reasonable Doubt [DVD]
Dvd ~ Samuel L Jackson
Price: £5.50

3.0 out of 5 stars Kept in the dark?, 5 Nov 2014
This review is from: Reasonable Doubt [DVD] (DVD)
Was not very impressed with this DVD.
Have not seen it advertised for cinema, so can only assume that it went
straight to DVD.
My main gripe is that it was either shot in the dark, or that my disc
was an iffy copy as both day light scenes and those shot at night were
very dark, so much so, that I could not always tell what was happening.
Neither Samuel L Jackson nor Dominic Cooper had much impact for me, and
they are both excellent actors when the script allows. The film is a
Canadian production, directed by Peter Howitt who directed Johnny English
he uses the nom de plume of Peter P Croudins on this film so perhaps even
he was not too sure about it?

A lack of subtitles did not help.
I could only muster 3 stars for this offering.
