3.0 out of 5 stars Badly composed, yet good info too, 20 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having read all those 5 star ratings I bought a copy of this book. There is certainly some useful info in it (though way too many repetitive case studies) - but the book was a hard read because it had been so very badly written. Clearly this was self-published and had not passed through the hands of a professional copy-editor. That very much got in the way for me. It was all over the place and had I not been so committed to animals, (and thus determined to read it through) I would have abandoned it very quickly.

The Compassionate Animal: An Interfaith Guide to the Extended Circle of Compassion
The Compassionate Animal: An Interfaith Guide to the Extended Circle of Compassion
by Barbara Gardner
Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the origins of non-violent traditions, 19 Jan. 2013
Living non-violently and coming into right relationship with our non-human kin is the only way forward - for their well-being and survival, for ours, and for the future of our shared home, this much beleaguered planet.

Barbara Gardner's book is an authoritative and easy to read guide back to our sanity and humanity. If you enjoyed Karen Armstrong's The Great Transformation, you'll enjoy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic. Will open a lot of eyes, hearts and minds., 29 Mar. 2011
This review is from: Ape (Animal) (Paperback)
John Sorenson's 'Ape' is quite simply one of the best books I have ever read. Thoroughly researched, traversing psychology, zoology, theology, philosophy, literature, art and popular culture with ease, it makes for compelling, page-turning reading - and does a very great deal to de-mystify our closest kin. You cannot read this book without demanding equal rights for our highly intelligent, fully conscious and very similar cousins. This book is a mirror and a must-read for any humane or ethical person.

The whole series is, in fact, a tour de force and worth purchasing. I recently read Barbara Allen's 'Pigeon' and Martin Wallen's 'Fox' (the latter in a day, again, I simply couldn't put it down, it did so much to correct our warped understanding of one of this world's most persecuted and maligned, yet actually very loveable, creatures) and I have just purchased 'Cow.' The books are clear,
accesible, compelling, brave enough to be pro-animal and to cut against the awful mainstream grain - and all round impressive. Read all of them! You won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspirational eye-opener, 28 Mar. 2010
This is a fantastic little book - full of facts, truth and compassion. I've bought it now about twelve times to give to different children who've come to me because they want to help animals. It's an inspiration and very well put together. Deserves to be in the library of every primary school. A must-read for the 7-10s. Excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars In Defense of Animals: The Second Wave, 26 Feb. 2009
A phenomenal book, vital for anyone who cares about animals. From the man who in many ways started the rights of animals revolution, with his 'Bible' Animal Liberation. Absolutely fantastic!

Quite simply this book changed my life. I have never read anything like it. Exceptional, important, morally bang on, inspirational - as they say, the Bible of the movement. Buy it! And buy one for all your friends and family while you're at it too. You won't look back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Empty Cages - phenomenal!, 22 Nov. 2007
This is one of the most astonishing books I have ever read! You will come away from it a changed person. Your relationship to the whole animal world, to your perception of our kindred species, to the clothes you wear and the food you put in your mouth - will be totally different. Empty Cages is an exceptional tour de force. Brilliantly written. I can't recommend it more highly. Buy it and tell all your friends about it! This is a book that could literally change the world. As Jane Goodall says, everyone should have a copy on their book shelves.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lives of Animals - buy it!, 22 Nov. 2007
This is one of the most fantastic books I have ever read. No wonder it won the Booker prize. A brilliant, concise, compassionate, inspirational look at our perception and treatment of other, non-human animals. Quite literally life changing.
