Great, if somewhat outdated performance., 20 Nov 2002
After picking up The Bends and OK Computer, I was keen to get my hands on some live Radiohead footage. I found The Astoria London Live to be a satisfying video, but somewhat outdated - it is by no means a representation of a modern day live show. I caught Radiohead live on the Amnesiac tour - they're a great live band, but their live show has matured greatly since the birth of the band in 1992. The video, filmed in 1994, showcases the band at their most raw and energetic, blasting out famous angst-ridden anthems from Pablo Honey and The Bends such as "Creep", "Stop Whispering", "The Bends" and "Just". While the video features blistering performances of such songs - with Jonny Greenwood's guitar work amazing as ever and Thom Yorke's vocals at their most powerful and accurate - these tracks are largely absent from Radiohead setlists today. As this is the only live material Radiohead have recorded for VHS, it's not a particularly good representation of the modern day live experience for newcomers to the band. Still, a great performance, but perhaps it's time for Radiohead Live - Number 2.
