This is the second novel by Lucy Floyd – the first being Yesterday – I’ve read and enjoyed.

The plotting is adroit. Twists and turns galore, and never predictable.

A cast of colourful characters – each with flaws, secrets and their own agendas - breathe life into the story.

Set all of this against the backdrop of Cuba at a time of revolution and you have a book well worth reading.

The plot works pretty well and the pace suits the content.

I found the main character too self-obsessed, angst-ridden and judgemental to appeal but as she's never in any sort of peril the reader isn't required to root for her.

This novel would really have benefitted from an experienced editor. Repetition of information and words echoed within the same sentences become annoying after a while. It would also have dealt with issues such as 'an enormous Range Rover' which is rather like saying 'a small Mini.'

2.0 out of 5 stars What could have been a fascinating insight to the times ..., 26 July 2014
What could have been a fascinating insight to the times was continuously let down by the quality of the prose.

And how does a woman develop a 'full set' of breasts?!

The wholly believable characters, deftly delivered plot and atmospheric prose quickly submerge you in another time and place.

Human nature with all its strengths and frailties is portrayed with clever and subtle insight to make this an absorbing story.

Another of Lucy Floyd’s titles – Baptism of Fire – has been re-issued and I’ll certainly be reading that one too.

Paris during the 1860s and a young Russian bride arrives in the world's most glamorous and exciting city looking forward to a new life. When her French husband disappears leaving her alone and penniless she is forced into some difficult choices.

Well written and researched historical fiction.

A vibrant and atmospheric tale.

Echoes from a bye-gone age.

How lovely to see Jean Webster's work being made available on Kindle. What a shame this talented writer died so young.

There are a few formatting issues but nothing to spoil reading enjoyment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth a read, 26 Jan 2014

In a dystopian near-future synthetic bods manage theme parks based on historical artefacts. But one bod stays awake when the sun goes down.

Gripping science fiction, at the same time tender, uplifting and hopeful.

A worthy follow-up to her first novel My Memories Of A Future Life.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could be better, 19 Jan 2014

The plot is sound enough and it moves at an appropriate pace.

The prose and structure lack polish and sophistication hence the story is often delivered in a cumbersome way.

With a professional edit it could be twice the book and merit twice the stars.

I'm a fan of Nivea but certainly wouldn't recommend this product. However much I used it left my skin feeling tight and stretched. After nearly four weeks use there is no visible improvement to my complexion. Very disappointing all round.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read, 9 Oct 2013

This was nominated for the 1999 Booker prize which was won by J.M. Coetzee, one of only three authors to win the award twice. Disgrace is a fine novel but Scherzo is a far more entertaining and fun read.

For a literary novel it's very accessible. The story is absorbing and witty with a devilishly clever plot.
