1.0 out of 5 stars Best for Italian speakers, 3 Dec. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this as my daughter is covering the subject in A level history. We sat and watched the first program as a family and it was basically incomprehensible. The narrator may be speaking English, but the tranlation from the original Italian was in a style of English we could make little sense of. There seemed to be no background explanations of the period and circumstances, which we take for granted in most documenrtries we watch. There were lots of clips from Italian movies that were presumably re enacting somthing relevant but since they had no subtitles the point was lost on us, the same applied to the old news reel clips.Only suitable for those who have sufficient knowledge that they needn't bother watching the series, or possibly an understanding of Italian....

5.0 out of 5 stars short pieces with a large heart, 22 Feb. 2009
This c.d. contains an eclectic mix of solo piano pieces, songs and small ensemble compositions. I found the quality of musicianship and sound recording to be first rate for all the pieces.
The composer Lutoslawski can be daunting in some of his larger orchestral compositions but this c.d. is totally comprehensible. For example there are variations on a well known Paganini theme played on two pianos which will be familiar to all and the direction Lutoslawski takes with this piece is totally coherent. Modernity without chaos,a sound world approachable but yet at the same time maintaining an enigmatic elusive distance.
I highly recommend this recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars value product, 22 Feb. 2009
I found the lakeballs to be in excellent condition and as close to new as is needed for a mid to high handicap golfer .
I think this product really represents very good value for money and is environmentally friendly in encouraging reuse of golf balls.

5.0 out of 5 stars offbeat and unusual film which scores many goals, 22 Feb. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Offside [DVD] (DVD)
A masterpiece of film making which i highly recommend. This is not the type of film one is used to. The plot of teenage Iranian girls attempting to attend an international soccer match is totally engrossing and will you have you on the edge of your seat until the very end which is totally unpredicted.
A wonderful concoction of paradoxes, a film ostensibly about soccer but no soccer is seen,an ostensible comedy but tragedy and serious undertones are always present,a treatise on feminism but men's points of views are not totally rejected and a film about modernity but ancient mores and customs ferment under the surface.
This film is thought provoking and enlightening without being preachy or sanctimonious, i highly recommend it to viewers of all ages and backgrounds.
I would rank this film now as one of my all time favourites.

5.0 out of 5 stars superb twentieth century opera little known, 10 July 2003
This opera was composed in the most appalling of circumstances in the Terezin concentration camp in the 1940's.It is both musicaly and dramaticaly of the highest quality. The plot concerns death going on strike and was recognized as a thinly veiled attack on Nazism and hence never performed during the composer's life time. The music is very strident with a lot of musical in references some of which i am still trying to decipher, the most obvious being a grotesquely distorted national anthem. The libretto by Peter Kien is a gem with real poetic underpinning which can be read in the accompanying sleave notes. As a non musician i cannot fault the playing or singing on this c.d.which seems highly commited .Ullmann is a rarely performed composer who can write quite biting phrases and concise melodies which are accessible and well worth the effort of getting to know. This c.d.will not dissapoint, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars superb twentieth century little known music, 10 July 2003
Erwin Schulhoff has dissapeared from view quite inexplicably to my mind.If you like twentieth century czech music you will surely enjoy this c.d. It presents his first three symphonies which are of the highest quality on this first class recording.Schulhoff is truly exciting in that he seems to quite seamlessly combine avant garde with jazz , neo classical effects and strong folk rythms .I speak as an amateur enthusiast not a musician.Think of Martinu,Janacek, elements of Stravinsky,Debussy and Milhaud and you will be able to place this music in context.Music as truly classless, open to many influences and democratic ,accessible and not the harsh discordant alienating twentieth century repertoire. These three symphonies present a very good introduction to his work.Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars contemporary poetry, 6 July 2003
This review is from: The Seven Ages (Paperback)
Louise Gluck is a modern American poet who has won many awards for her poetry. This 2001 collection is of the high standard one has come to expect from her.As someone from a non arts background i can only express a very amateur appreciation. My impression is that this collection of poems entitled "The seven ages" is basing it's title on the Shakespearian expression of the stages of a person's life. This book evolves as an oasis of thoughtfulness.I enjoyed such phrases as ;"Time had been good to them, and now they can discuss it together from within,so to speak, which, before, they could not." I thoroughly recommend this book which even on rereading will give further delight.
