Branson: Behind the Mask

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating but sad - and yet so true, 27 Aug. 2015

Well written and superbly researched. I'd like to have seen more on the Little Red fiasco which was completely omitted. I am a self confessed airline geek of the highest order. I have worked with and for many high level company leaders and always knew Branson could not have got where he is without leaving wreckage behind him. However the scale of his ability to create smoke and mirrors is extraordinary. Yet he seems now almost a hollow cut out sailing into the sunset.

If you doubt how real these truth are just look at the Little Red saga at Virgin Atlantic - everyone knew from day one it would fail for all the reasons Virgin were warned about. Branson appearing with the usual blonds and in underpants saying "stiff competition" over his privates for photos at the press launch, it was all too fake. Then the recent TV series about the airline. He couldn't even remember staff he worked with for 30 years. He seemed disconnected. Young staff had never even seem him never mind met him. At the 787 route launch to Atlanta he made the most embarrassingly unscripted and impromptu speech I've ever seen. The audience looked shocked, disappointed, even dumbfounded. In 2012 there was a huge Virgin Galactic stand at Farnborough Airshow. In 2014 it wasn't even there.

So, read this book, look at what you can see for yourself - the adoration of a workforce - 500 of whom were made redundant just as the TV Show finished airing and yet it went almost unreported. Then look into the book again and it becomes sad, for Virgin and for Britain. We were all conned by the image makers and Branson's bluster. So while I may not like Branson or his modus operandi, will it stop me flying Virgin? No! An excellent book that deserves a wider audience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amusing, 4 Aug. 2015

Roger Moore's tales are amusing anecdotes from an age when things were very different indeed. You can hear him in your head as you read, he writes as he speaks and that's rather enjoyable. The downside is that it all seems a little hollow and lacks the context and linear time frame of say, David Niven's books. In any event they are a charming read and a surprising insight into the mind of Roger Moore. How we see things is so often a gateway to our psychology - the good thing is that Roger doesn't disappoint. This is him, you know it, you feel it and that's what made it worthwhile.

3.0 out of 5 stars A great actor tells his amusing life story, 11 Jun. 2015

Frank and honest. I had the pleasure of meeting Roger Moore in 2003 and spent twenty minutes talking to him. A real gentleman with genuine warmth and he really didn't mind me asking about his days in Bond and in The Persuaders which I grew up on. Having a said that he is so polite and so nice it takes the edge off his writing and it gets a little dull in places. Other than that fascinating, especially if read with knowledge of the periods covered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still legendary and remastered gem, 11 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
On iTunes they charge £35.99 per series. This was £41 for all three and they are stunningly re-mastered. There are literally three dozen micro documentaries including one where Leonard Nimoy shows an actuarial timer - it tells him he has 5,000 plus days to live based on statistics. He was only 88 days out when he died. Creepy. However that aside its full of surprises. Even the Tribbles DS9 and cartoon episodes are included. It's worth every penny for this legendary series without which modern science fiction would be so much different. After recording all the DVD's to iTunes I sold the set for £31. £10 for 79 episodes and all the supporting docs! Not bad.

3.0 out of 5 stars A pre-judged history of nothing, 7 Jun. 2015

Really a history of about the publication of documents that may or may not be accurate representations of what was or was not said. You're not going to learn very much about WE as if you read this you'll have already read everything else. A book that is at best a footnote to a footnote in history. Disappointing. Utterly unreadable and would make no sense unless you were already reasonably expert on the WE story.

3.0 out of 5 stars It works and it doesn't work, 18 Jun. 2014

Small, neat and it plays blu ray from with no problems. However if I stream from my iMac to the Apple TV it buffers, then plays back in a slightly jittery way that makes to seem like 1 in 20 frames is missing, then every 17 minutes it cuts off the sound. If I plug the Apple TV directly into the TV everything is normal, so its definitely this device. It ONLY happens with streaming from the iMac, it's completely normal playing just from the Apple TV as a source, or when the iMac is streaming to the Apple TV and the device isn't used.

Odd I know, and I don't stream form the iMac very often to be fair, so its an annoyance but not the end of the world. the supplier took a few days to mail it out, expected it to be quicker.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast and reliable, 17 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Good quality, fast with medium sized quality pictures up to around 5mb but has very little difference in pace storing larger files than a C4 or C6, which seems odd. Downloads very quickly as one would expect from a class 10. Storing time is what matters as I have to take photos of objects travelling at up to 400moh, at ranges of up to 20 miles with zoom at x 125 where in the space of the time it takes to save the image the object may have moved a considerable distance before the next shot, if there can even be a next shot. Without spending loads of money trying out more and more cards it will have to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ok but a bit too big, excellent value though, 17 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It really is way to big for the camera despite being advertised as specifically for it. It does have belt and shoulder straps, though how anyone would use that on a belt I have no idea, it would be more than a bit unsightly! A few small pockets for spare cards and batteries too. It was advertised as used like new and that was very fair and for the price, £6, it was a bargain.
