2.0 out of 5 stars fundamentally flawed, 25 Jan 2014
This review is from: Gill Neoprene Knee Pads (Misc.)
These pads are chunky and look well made. I have a fair bit of Gill kit and was expecting no fuss competence from them. When first donning them they are fine, but as soon as you kneel (the whole point...) the velcro straps (which are too short so very tight) start to dig painfully into the back of the leg. After 3 races of severe discomfort the stitching is also coming apart. 20-odd quid down they drain; they are being retired and I'll have to find an alternative.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 7 Oct 2013
This review is from: Sealskinz Mid Light Socks (Misc.)
I wear these with low deck shoes when sailing, instead of cumbersome (and expensive) sailing boots. Keep my feet dry even when totally inundated. The only drawback I have noticed as that they start to loose elasticity after a while (though to be fair they have had a LOT of use). Heartily recommended nonetheless.

3.0 out of 5 stars Annoying, 16 Sep 2013

This could so easily have been a 5* product except for one annoying and thoughtless design flaw. It basically a good trimmer, reasonably built and and good value except that comes with a moulded 3 pin plug. So you cant't charge or use it in the bathroom on a shaver socket...insane. Do they expect people to sit in their living rooms shaving?

...then gives a "card write protected " error. Which given micro SD cards CAN'T be write protected is somewhat frustrating. Card works in other adapters so clearly its this card reader that has malfunctioned.

Its cheap. But its pretty useless too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good mouse, 11 Mar 2013
I bought this mouse after having problems with the bundled wireless mouse on my Dell and its logitech replacement, neither of which lasted as long as I would have hoped. I was advised that a gaming mouse, built to take intensive use might be a better option. Added to that, the versatility of the extra programmable buttons would be a bonus. I chose this model as it seemed to represent q lot of features at the price point; there are more feature rich models out there, but usually twice the price. Not being a hardcore gamer, I also didn't want some monstrosity emblazoned with orc skulls, targeting crosshairs and featuring 200 buttons etc. etc!

Build: This is a well built mouse, with a comfortable textured finish. The shape is pretty good, designed symmetrically so it can be used left handedly too. It is illuminated, and I initially thought the lights were a gaming gimmick, but are actually quite handy (see below.) It has a long cable so positioning of the PC isn't an issue, but I would have preferred to see it more tangle resistant given the length. It is better suited for medium, small hands however; in fact, after using for several months I am of the opinion its just a little TOO small. I have callouses and worn nails from my fingers constantly dragging on the desk!!! ...A removable finger-guard would have been nice.

Operation: Highly customisable, with plenty of buttons. Tracks well an all sorts of surfaces, but the laser recess is deep and can collect dust so needs to be cleaned now and then; a simple task. The buttons and scroll wheel are positive and solid, but the scroll wheel click is a bit coarse which I find a little annoying when I need precise zoom control in imaging programmes. The software is excellent if you take the trouble to use it, allowing you to set up custom modes (button macros, DPI etc) for individual programmes that auto launch, very handy! It even features pre-made macros fro some more popular games. You can also programme the light colour to change so that you can easily see the mode your mouse is in which is a good idea. For those who don't want to programme the buttons, the driver is easily accessible from the system tray for changing settings as you require.

All in all a good mouse, less expensive than some of the competition. With a few tweaks would be an excellent mouse, though that would probably bump up the price...

4.0 out of 5 stars Bossa brilliance, 7 Aug 2012

Bud Shank is often overlooked when it comes to American bossa players, but in fact his association with the genre predates that of his better known contemporary, Stan Getz. Shank's feel for the time signatures is excellent and the agile alto lends itself to the supple lines of the tunes while still feeling "cool" in different way from Getz well known tenor tone. This double CD contains a wealth of material, and is well worth exploring for all fans of the genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Marcus... being Marcus, 7 Aug 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Panther/Live (Audio CD)
This a very tipical Marcus Miller live set from the late 1990s, similar infact to the "live more" album from 1997, albeit missing the legendery Hiram Bullock on guitar. (Note: the sleeve of the album erroneously says its from 1988, which it can't be as Miles was still alive then so MM wouldn't be performing Tutu solo at this time... and the track Panther wasn't even released till 1993! I would guess that's a typo and this is a 1998 gig).

The palying is excellent as you would expect; Poogie Bell gets in a suitably funky groove and Kenny Garrett and "Patches" Stewart are their usual excellent selves, with strong solos. The whole live vibe definitely adds to the occasionally slightly sterile feel of the studio versions of these tracks. Choosing a standout track is difficult, as there is nothing bad here... Personally I like Ju-Ju as it is reminiscent of the great 1980's Sanborn band with MM and Hiram Bulock; Garret's tone on alto is more bebop than Sanborn's , but the feel is still soulful and funky.

If you like MM, then you'll like this... If you havent heard MM, get out from under that rock; this is as good a place as any to start!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny, 4 Aug 2012
Very simple no frills binocuars, concentrating on exceptional quality optics (these easily have the clearest and sharpest image I have seen compared to anything I have tried in the 200-400 range).

The pop away lens cups are excellent if you are wearing specs or sunnies.
The dipotre control on the barrel is thoughtfully placed so its out of the way once set.
They are light and fold very small; ideal travel companions.

Not cheap, but true quality seldom is.
May temporarily mist if exposed to large changes in temperatre and humidity (I'm talking in the tropics going from an air conditioned room to outdoors at 40 degrees and 95% relative himidity), but in normal use this is very rare indeed.
At this price, a case would have been nice...

2.0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor, 16 Jun 2012
This review is from: Shape Shifter (Audio CD)
I have been a huge fan of Santana the band and Carlos Santana the guitarist since the 70s... His lyricism, fluency and ability to meld musical styles made him truly exceptional. Wether playing blues, rock oriented music or Jazz (Swing of Delight was a true masterpiece with some of the finest modern jazz artists along for the ride), CS has been inspirational. Past tense. The last couple of decades have seen a very disappointing focus on bland pop(even though it has yielded hits a plenty); what was once fusion is now just mishmash; his delicacy of touch and masterful blues phrasing have given way to over processed soul-less blandness. Make no mistake , he CAN still play, but the last few recorded outings don't show him at anything like his best. This latest outing is a case in point. If you took his great instrumental performances (Samba pa ti, Europa, Incdent at Neshabur, FLor D'Luna, Gardenia, Nueva York, etc etc) you would have a collection par excellence. This collection is sadly far from it. Strand out tracks? None. The production and keyboard textures are dated and cheesy (Chester Thompson seems to have bypassed the last 20 years or so completely); the tunes are forgettable; there is no fire and his famously singing guitar tone is lost in dreadful production miasma...

Carlos you deserve better. So do your fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music... shame about Amazon!, 28 April 2012

This is the second offering from the up and coming London based group, The Mariana Hollow. Intelligent, modern heavy rock music, well played and with Rebecca Spinks' astonishing vocal talents to boot. Though there are plenty of hooks sprinkled through this set, it isn't pop music; its complexity rewards the listener who is willing to invest the time to listen to it seriously. The interplay of the guitars is delightful and the coherent rythm section drives the mostly mid-tempo numbers with deft touches.

CAVEAT. I have given this five starts on the quality of the music.... BUT, Amazon (utterly inexplicably), don't give you the full album. The standout track (and first single) "your halo" [check out the video on youtube!] is missing. I had to go elswhere to download that at extra cost so Amazon please sort it out! You are ripping people off by pretending to sell them the whole album but only giving them 10 of the 11 tracks.
