5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best of the post Herbert 'prequels'., 24 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Finally a prequel that des not disappoint. It is largely shod of the endless repetitions and nonsensical trying too hard by the authors visibly scared of Herbert's genius. The twists and turns of the storylines are original and exciting anew. All is also highly plausible within the environment delineated for the store. I won't spoil this by referring to any details of the story. Just assume it is exciting, fresh and joy to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Must have from the master of his art, 24 May 2014

This review is from: Silver Rails (Audio CD)
I very much worry that this might be one of the very last works of Legend that is jack Bruce - for that alone it deserves every attention. The record itself is excellent. It floats effortlessly between blues-rock, prog-rock to rock. It never panders to any cliché and the creative soul of Jack is connecting with yours from the first bar. Medeski on Hammond/keys is a wonderful extra. His contribution, aside from the obvious keyboard genius, shows class. He enhances every song he plays on but without imposing himself on it. Another perfect balance was found between the music and the lyrical content. That is often complex and multilayered and requires total attention of the listener to fully come through. If there is any criticism - it might be levied on guitar parts, which are too often predictable.

The Deep Beyond: Cuckoo's Egg--Serpent's Reach (Daw Science Fiction)
The Deep Beyond: Cuckoo's Egg--Serpent's Reach (Daw Science Fiction)
by C. J. Cherryh
Edition: Mass Market Paperback
Price: £6.37

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best alien viewpoint story, 11 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As proven by Foreigner, Cherryh has real hots for the alien. Joke aside, like the Foreigner series the aliens in Cockoo's Egg are coherent, have deep personalities and their activities are consistent with being - well not us. She also stands back from over-explaining, as what is obvious to aliens should remain so to THEM and remain for us to wonder about. What seems inconceivable is that such great idea ends after so few ages. Clearly the clash of civilizations between Earth and 'people' has to happen and the sides seem not too far apart in terms of technological progress. Like in Foreigner we have an advantage but they have the author and the lack of the under-dog no doubt. Either way - great stuff and well done. the Serpent's reach is a great, great read but lacks depth and in place also falls short on credibility. Seems this could have been written by any anthill observer rather than the very best in alien affairs. That said the human characters are credible have the right depth and it is a riveting read throughout if not a bit juvenile.

Product meets expectations. Delivery was quick. But for some reason these things are always overpriced compared to other pre-printed paper products. for shame...

A Bridge of Years
A Bridge of Years
by Robert Charles Wilson
Edition: Paperback
Price: £5.12

5.0 out of 5 stars Great writing - as always, 2 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: A Bridge of Years (Paperback)
Wilson's handiwork is always good. Characters have depth, circumstances they 'live' in always logical, probable and without mistakes. Although you can (almost) guess how will the story develop you are still compelled to enjoy every aspect of the journey. It seems to me that this story would yield itself to at least one great sequel.

3.0 out of 5 stars much needed but 'can do better', 2 Jan. 2014

This review is from: Man-Kzin Wars XlV (Paperback)
I yield to no one as a fan of Larry Niven and his creations. This instalment was a much craved fix for me but in the cold light of day the assembled stories are of uneven quality from almost phenomenal to a C- junior school essay effort (to be kind to some contributors). Don't wish to point out mistakes and instances of lack of basic logic here and there as if you - like me - can't get enough of Man-Kzin contretempts the book is still worth buying.

Better than most but a bit fragile in the arm area. Clear screen a plus. Not always ick-up the low B string on basses.

2.0 out of 5 stars This one is a very well written letdown., 1 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Neptune's Brood (Hardcover)
The subject matter is more or less how to make theory of money in a complex trading environment exciting by giving it a sci-fi twist. Seems the author himself has doubts about core subject as he belabours and over-explains with frightening frequency.

Extremely well written. Complex characters, great plot lines and care for language make it a near-perfect package. Not my no 1 Sci-Fi author but most definitely the most respected.
