4.0 out of 5 stars SNEER: "X-BlueBud": A First Look, 1 Feb. 2015
Length:: 2:03 Mins

The "X-BlueBud" is, as the name suggests, a copy of the more well-known "BlueBuds" by Jaybird.

These, just like the Jaybird's and "Wingz" by NeoJDX, are a good solid pair of canalbud-style headphones.

Canalbuds are specifically designed to be wedged in the earcanal. This both puts the micro-sized speaker closer to the eardrum and simultaneous seal the sound from outside noises.

This style of the headphones sometimes, depending on the manufacturer, would tend to have vibration emanate from the hanging back cord. This is NOT a problem here.

***
There are, like the Wingz, a similar distinction that has to be mentioned between these "BlueBuds" and the ones offered by Jaybird.

The sound reproduction and weight of these are very good for a consumer-grade stereo canalbud-style headphones. The Jaybird have a nicer sound reproduction in addition to the lightweight feel and handsome craftsmanship, but you're looking at a product that's twice the price of these SNEER's.

Does twice the price of the Jaybirds really matter in connection to these by SNEER, from my standpoint, only if you're an audiophile because you will hear a difference.

But on the whole, for a very moderately-price sports headphones, these are very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars TaoTronics "TT-BH05" Sports Headset: A Critical Review, 27 Jan. 2015
Length:: 2:16 Mins

We've been reviewing quite a few headsets recently and this is the 3rd sports headphones that we've seen in a week.

The "TT-BH05's" offers the best of the standard features and at a premium price, but I'll get to the price in a moment.

These wireless headphones package comes with:

+ Wireless "sports headphones"
+ beautiful, compact mesh bag
+ micro usb charge plug
+ extra ear plugs
+ Quickstart guide/ warranty

*** Inspection ***
One of the known problems with sports headphones have been corrected here, such as:

* vibrating hanging cord
* small push-button keys
* too many buttons

*** Sound reproduction ***

The sound is crisp and a survey of selected mp3 songs sounded terrific. The dynamic range is 20Hz to 20kHz: standard for regular headsets but higher than the typical sports headphone range. This is a plus.

The headphones has a charge period of 4.5 hours on a single battery charge.

The manual claims that the headphone has a Bluetooth 4.0 radio installed but has a printed range of only 33 feet. A range of 33 feet is the maximum range for a bluetooth radio, version 2.1. BTW, Bluetooth 3.0 has a range of 50 feet and 4.0 has a range of 100 feet.

But, the design and upgraded features makes this a great sports headphone. I think at the current price (of this written review) of $100 is a bit steep, I would hesitate to recommend this if you see Amazon's fluctuating price drops this to $75.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soundpeats "QY7": A Critical Review., 26 Jan. 2015
Length:: 2:18 Mins

The "QY7" by Soundpeats is a great pair of sports headphones and without the annoying vibrating cord that plagues most sports headphones of this kind.

***

I took the QY7's along with a few other headphones to work last week, just to get some objective criticism of these headsets and the QY7's were very highly regarded in a couple of different areas.

First, everyone said that the QY7's sounded really good. Good midrange and the bass was quite impressive. These headphones are geared toward the bass-heavy and mid-range level of music.

As one of my co-workers mentioned, the fit was very snug, yet comfortable. He mentioned that the headphones stayed put and he didn't have to re-adjust them as often as he would with other sports headphones.

And, as I mentioned earlier, the hanging cord which this one has an uncomfortable long one, doesn't vibrate when it rubs against your shirt or if you're on the treadmill. This is important because I've had several where the cord would not only vibrate by the vibration would be amplified to the point that it was unusable in a gym setting. I would end up keeping them as an emergency pair of headphones that I'd wear on the bus going to work but for nothing else.

These are exceptional extra long cord notwithstanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars AirPlus' 13000mAh External Battery,, 21 Jan. 2015
AirPlus massive 13000 is a uniquely designed that, according to the manufacturer, output/recharges devices considerably faster than other higher capacity batteries.

There are numerous "protections" that the company claims is built into the circuitry. I can't verify that it's there or if it works.

Both ports, when I measured the outputs are a few point higher than average but not considerably.

But, despite their exaggerated claims, this battery does work and it works well.

I also like the handle grip on this battery, it does make holding the battery easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ZeroLemon Ext. Battery for The Note 4: A Critical Review,, 12 Jan. 2015
Length:: 4:22 Mins

Rated: B+/ A-

ZeroLemon's "extended battery" for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is more than just a bigger, replacement battery for the manufacturers OEM battery. It is a combination, extended battery, hard case, kickstand w/ a protective screen protector all in one phenomenal set.

We've been using ZeroLemon products now for almost 3 years and we've never had any major complaints, a few minor complaints but for a battery that so strong and a hardcase that betters Otterbox' Defender for this phone and at a price that also includes a battery that 3x the original, it's hard to ignore how great this is.

First and foremost, this is a set that replaces your phone's native battery with a battery that will give you 3x the usage. And, it has and still does meet this claim.

It's also a hardcase in the vein of a Otterbox Defender. We have Otterbox cases and they're very, very good but this ZeroLemon hardcase is just as good as the Otterbox. The Defender, by the way, runs about $65 - $75, just about the price for this ZeroLemon.

ZeroLemon changed their style of hardcase with the S5 last January. Unlike the Ext. battery for the Note 3, this case (like the 5) has a modified construction. The Note 3's case was rounded and had a textured feel to it.

This case has tapered edges, which slightly reduces the size of the case.

The case set comes with:

* 10000 mAh lithium ion battery
* 2-Piece inner frame
* Hard outercase
* screen protector
* belt holster w/ kickstand
* Quickstart guide
* 6-Month guarantee

With all lithium ion batteries, they have to be "conditioned" for a 5-cycle period. "Conditioning" a lithium ion battery is simply charging the battery to 100% and using the battery until its completely drained and recharging the battery without using it until it reaches 100%. This cycle is repeated an additional 4x.

What this does is to stretch and strengthen the battery so that it woud function at it's highest capacity and it actually extends the life of the battery if you condition the battery for a cycle or two every few months.

Its's been my experience the "Grade A" lithium ion batteries like the ZeroLemon and a few others will last you at least 2.5 years before you noticed a marginal drop in charging output/ recharge time.

In all, the initial "conditioning period will be about 2 weeks.

In addition, this years "Note" battery also has:

* Full NFC support for the S Beam and Google Wallet.
* Newest ergonomic design that reduces the impact shock from accidental drops.

***
There's one thing that I have to mention that's glaringly important function that's compromised: the internal speaker when used for the Speaker Phone function.

As I point out in the video, the battery almost completely covers the speaker frame. There's a small passage where the sound makes its way out of the speaker but the sound is muffled and if you're in an area where there's a lot of heavy sound, like a warehouse or in a bus or train, you almost can't hear the speaker for the noise around you.

A workaround can be to use the phone with a wireless speaker-phone, bluetooth headset/ headphone or simply walk to a less noisey area.

The battery with the case is, understandably, bigger AND heavier. This is the price you'd pay to protect your $750 investment. And, I think that's a small price to pay.

Insurance for *qualified and acceptable accidents (as per the insurance company) is $10/ mo. Over a 2 year period that $240 plus a $150 deductible if the phone has to be replaced; or, $390. So, over the theoretical life of the Note, you'd probably pay over $1000 as the real cost of the phone. If you're generally careful with your phone with the infrequent dropping of the phone, the ZeroLemon--in my experience--will protect your phone.

So, for great protection and a battery that will keep your phone on for at least a week without needing to recharge under "normal" use, you're only paying about $825 and at the end of a 2-year period, you're phone will have a higher resale value than if you didn't have a combo case like the ZeroLemon.

4.0 out of 5 stars UAG For the Galaxy Note 4: A First Look, 24 Dec. 2014
The UAG for the Note 4 is as good of a hard case as they did for the Note 3 which we had last year.

This is the typical chic UAG design that we've come to expect from this trendy company. Every contour of the case fits the Note 4 exactly.

The case is made out of plastic-rubber combination.

The housing is made out of a hard and clear plastic. They (UAG) claim that it's military grade--I don't know how anyone can verify that, nor would I be foolish enough to put my phone to the test to see if the case would hold up with rigorous testing. The company won't reimburse anyone for damage to their phone, so caution should always be taken.

***
In the time that they've been in operation, cases for cellphones have improved dramatically. And, despite comparisons, the UAG is a close 3rd in protection when compared to either the ZeroLemon or to the Otterbox.

And, there's also the issue of newer companies producing innovative hard cases with built in compartments for either credit or business cards or cash.

But, for what it's worth, it's a beautiful, sturdy case that will protect your phone from most of the common types of falls and accidents, but may not survive being thrown from a moving car.

5.0 out of 5 stars EC Tech 18000 mAh External Battery: A Critical Review, 1 Dec. 2014
Length:: 1:37 Mins

This is a beast, plain and simple.

***

I have several high-capacity batteries. If you have higher-end smartphones and tablets and accessories, then you need a higher-capacity battery such as this.

No one likes to have a dead battery and if you carry around a tablet or a hybrid that you need to work or if you're out in the field where there's no electrical outlet, then something like this will do you well.

Couple of things to note about extended batteries and the "better" ones by EC Tech and a few others.

First of all, EC Tech offers a 1-year guarantee.

I have several higher capacity batteries and they last for years. I had a 12000 that only lost a 20% charge after being misplaced for 2.5 years. A 10000 that I carry in my backpack didn't need recharging until I used it intensively for a couple of days.

Also, this is an 18000 mAh lithium-ion battery. And, like all li-ion batteries, this battery MUST be conditioned.

By conditioning, I mean charge it to 100% (this battery was completely dead when I received it, despite the common custom of at 25-50% initial charge), used until it's completely drained and then re-charged to 100% without using the battery. This conditioning is required for 5 complete cycles, which in the case of this battery will easily be 2.5 weeks.

This conditioning stretches the battery cells and enables it to work at its highest capacity, including the speed of recharging multiple mobile devices.

This massive battery (which you'll most likely keep in a cabinet until you go on that business trip or camping trip) measures:

6.75" x 4.75" x .5" and weighs 1.3 lbs.

It features:

* Two (2) usb ports: 1A and 2.1A output
* Four-bar battery strength indicator
* Separate Power button
* Flashlight

This is a VERY durable and well-made battery and if you have someone who has several tech items, a battery like this one would be a good one to have on-hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Huge, Crisp Sound From A Small Device! EC Tech's Portable B/T Speaker: A Critical Review, 30 Nov. 2014
Length:: 8:10 Mins

Mini Speakers, Mini Soundbars and speakers in general are a dime-a-dozen. With the vast majority giving good and acceptable sound at the various price points. With the exception of one poorly designed and over-hype speaker that I saw way back in March or April, there hasn't been a speaker that you wouldn't like if you bought it.

This speaker by EC Tech is in that group of well-made or perhaps very-well-made speakers.

This is a single 5W speaker that wirelessly connects to your mobile device or laptop by a bluetooth 4.0 radio.

This device is noticeably loud. I have several dual speaker, mini soundbar that are 6 or 8 or even 10 w and this is as loud as those.

*** Features ***

This device has all of the standard features that are customary with speakers that you'll find on the market right now, like:

* Bluetooth v 4.0
* Separate ON/ OFF switch
* Aux in port
* Phone mic
* Play/Pause and FF/Rew button
* micro usb plug (and port)
* Aux plug (single head jack)

This mini speaker measures:
2.75" x 2.75" x 3" and weighs .9 lbs

This gorgeous "Titanium Gray" mini speaker produces great sound as you can tell from the video clips and would make a great stocking-stuffer for all of your tech-loving guests.
