Der Rosenkavalier [Restored Edition] [Blu-ray]
Der Rosenkavalier [Restored Edition] [Blu-ray]
Dvd ~ Elisabeth Schwarzkopf

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Schwarzkopf, 18 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought this just this month - December 2013. Was a bit sceptical about what sort of quality it would be, but for 1961 it is quite acceptable and has been refurbished well. Some lack of synching between lips and voices, but the cast is miming after all.

The revelation for me is Schwarzkopf - I only saw her once in the flesh - in recital in later years, and she was still mesmerising. Here, much younger of course, she has Hollywood film star looks and acts incredibly convincingly. No grand gestures - all completely natural. Beautiful to watch and beautiful to listen to. And at the end of act one she actually seems to have aged, reflecting the Marschallin's own concerns about her status and future.

Buy it!

1.0 out of 5 stars The wrong track (again), 9 Dec 2013

This is the Ophelia's aria from Hamlet followed by the final scene of Il Pirata - not Anna Bolena at all.

The Bone Bed (Scarpetta Novels)
The Bone Bed (Scarpetta Novels)
by Patricia Cornwell
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.43

1.0 out of 5 stars Predictable, or what?, 20 Oct 2013
Another crappy Cornwell Scarpetta book. Full of interminable forensic jargon and self aggrandisement on the part of the central character, who is accomplished in SO many different areas, and who has become pretty much an emotional void. Irritating first person in the present narrative spread over 48 hours. Scarpetta ends up captured (again, of course) by the perpetrator, and then (again, of course) cooks pizza and pasta for her friends (she should be REALLY fat by now!) Cornwell describes her as "no longer in her thirties". Shouldn't she be at least 60 by now????

So much fluff gets down the radiators and it's a problem getting it out - this little gadget does it really well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Faulty MP3 download, 21 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very good performance, but at the time of writing (21 May 2013), there is fault with the download. There is no pause between the tracks and they cut off suddenly, losing final reverberation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old recording sounds its age, 29 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
CD arrived in better condition than expected. So happy with purchase. I just wanted to hear this recording of Gerontius which is often touted as a benchmark. It really does sound its age and the English pronunciation of the singers now sounds quaint. Personally I prefer Gedda's Gerontius and any of Baker (Barbirolli), Minton or Watts to Gladys Ripley, who, like Watts does not take the high alternative on the final Alleluia. It is however interesting to have two different - and different sounding - singers for the Priest and the Angel of the Agony. Probably for completists only!

3.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE BEFORE YOU BUY, 20 Jan 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
You need to be absolutely clear before purchasing this - and it's not particularly cheap - what Apple products it actually works with:

It works FULLY with the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S - and that's it!

With iPad 1, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4th Generation (but not 3rd or earlier) you can stream videos - and that is all.

I did not pick this up from the Amazon product description, so it doesn't work fully with my iPad (it's not a 2), but luckily I have an iPhone 4S, so it works fully with that.

I still think it is ridiculously expensive, but that's Apple for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent, 24 Nov 2011
This review is from: The Slap (Paperback)
After reading some of the reviews of this book, I was in two minds as to whether I should read it. However, I have been watching the TV series and wanted to see how the book filled out the dramatisation. How glad I was - the narrative is linear, but seen through the eyes of eight of the characters involved. The writing is excellent, and I found the book difficult to put down. It doesn't matter that the characters are all flawed (call it unlikeable if you must - I didn't find that - they were just human), because this actually drives the story onwards. I know Sydney, but not Melbourne. However, I guess the two cities can't be that different, and you get a real feel for Australian city life in this book - especially the less attractive side of it! What comes over really strongly is that, for what most Europeans think is a mainly white, Caucasian society, Australian cities' demographic is now extremely multicultural and multiracial - and yet it still continues to be very racially and culturally prejudiced under the surface.

The book differs considerably from the TV adaptation - apart from anything else, in the TV series Aisha is no longer Indian - she is black, and Rosie and Anouk become sisters. The adaptation manages to change the detail by adding incident not in the book, whilst not damaging the main thrust of the plot - and very successfully.

Usually, after reading a paperback, I pass it on to a friend or charity shop. In this case, I shall certainly offer it out on loan, but feel that I shall want it back for re-reading some time in the future.

Previously bought an HP364XL photo cartridge with Vivera ink - beware! It is different from the ordinary XL and does not fit all printers - including mine. THIS ONE is the right one.
