2.0 out of 5 stars Worse in every respect than the TomTom I bought 9 years ago, 23 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've now been using the new TomTom Via for about 6 months. Previously I owned a TomTom Go, bought in 2005. Sadly I gave the old Go away to a friend. I say sadly because the new one is worse in almost every single respect than the old one. Some of the problems/faults with the new one:

* Incredibly slow to boot up. Literally takes minutes, whereas the old one came up in a few seconds.

* Annoying navigation directions. I have turned the sound off as that's the only way to avoid me throwing the thing out of the window.

* Slooowww user interface. Well the old one wasn't fast, but come on hasn't technology moved on at all in 9 years?

* Lots of obvious software bugs: For example, navigate to a favourite and then while you're waiting for the next screen to come up (which takes seconds, see above), select another favourite. It will go with the first one you selected.

* Terrible battery life.

* It still has the crappy Windows-only update software. Intrusive, requires bizarre brower plugins, unintuitive.

Is there anything I like about it? It's smaller.

My advice: find someone who has an old TomTom Go, and advise them to upgrade it. Then get them to give you their old Go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the price, 3 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This speaker/dock has a micro USB charger, variable arms to hold the phone, and uses bluetooth for audio, and therefore it's compatible with pretty much any Android phone and most 7" tablets too. The speakers sound good and are surprisingly solid. It's let down by the micro USB charger being a bit flimsy. For 40 it's a decent piece of kit that just works.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works, tricky to get an even finish, 22 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The first thing to say is this works - I planed two doors today and they no longer stick. However it's hard to produce a completely even effect. Starting from one end and going all the way to the other end, apply even pressure all the way along. Don't stop and definitely don't go back over a bit. It takes a bit of practice so don't do what I did and start working on the doors. Practice on a bit of spare wood first.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cracked, 13 Nov 2013

Left it outside in the cold, came back to find it has cracked into two neat pieces. Now you may argue that I shouldn't have left it outside, and perhaps you're right, but it's something others might want to know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun music, terrible lyrics, 13 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: New Magnetic Wonder (Audio CD)
I honestly thought this was Christian Rock when I first put it on. The lyrics are terrible. However musically it's hit after hit, a kind of Supertramp meets ELO, and if you can tune out what he's singing about it's very enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great when it's working, not so great when it's not, 13 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've been using this router for around 3 months. The good parts: It achieves 25% higher sync speed and is far and away more stable than my old Netgear modem. It also has lots of great features including IPv6 support.

Unfortunately it failed completely after two months. The DSL side simply stopped working, no sync at all. Rebooting multiple times and resetting to factory config did not help. Eventually I unplugged it and was just about to swap back to my old modem when I decided to give it one last chance. And .. it worked again. Apparently when the DSL complete failure happens, you have to unplug it, leave it a while, and plug it back in. Time will tell if this failure mode occurs again.

The second annoying thing was with the supplied firmware which would randomly give a 400 error on every third or fourth click. I fixed this by updating to the newest firmware from Billion's site (not exactly easy to find - make sure you're looking for the 7800 firmware, not the more popular 7800N model firmware which doesn't work). You also have to reset the router back to factory settings in order to upgrade the firmware which is a faff.

The third annoying thing is the user interface is unintuitive. It's usually impossible to find some setting which you've just visited, and the UI has a horrible Basic/Advanced modality which took me ages to work out (and is essentially pointless as no one would ever want to have just the "Basic" mode).

It seems like there's a lot of potential for this to be not just a good but a great router, if Billion tried a bit harder on the software side.

Solwise ADSL Faceplate Splitter for NTE5

2.0 out of 5 stars Halves the speed of my ADSL, 13 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The plate is easy to fit - just unscrew the old faceplate, put this in its place, and screw on. However this basically halved the sync speed and introduced audible noise on the phone line. After persisting with it for about a month, I've switched back to the BT faceplate plus my old microfilter, and the speed has doubled (back to how it was).

2 stars because it's easy to fit and obviously works for some people here.

5.0 out of 5 stars All that needs to be said is: this works, 12 Nov 2013

Although we only live about 1.5 km from the nearest mast, because of the thick walls of the house and a hill and forest in the way, our village is a mobile dead zone. You're lucky if you can get a signal at all, and even at the end of the garden where you can get 1 bar, making mobile phone calls is impossible. Mobile data using a standard phone is out of the question.

Ofcom's sitefinder database publishes the location of the nearest masts so I was able to work out which upstairs window faces in the right direction, and I placed the Wibe there. Mobile phones located in the top corner of this window get 2 bars of 2G (no data of course).

As well as the Wibe I also ordered Virgin's VIP mobile SIM: unlimited data for 15pcm. I chose Virgin because they use the Orange and T-mobile networks, and two of the closest masts are Orange and T-mobile.

The Wibe rocks it. It found a 3G signal through one antenna and gave me an average 170 KByte/sec download speed (the rate varies wildly, apparently because Virgin are throttling it or just suffering congestion). Interactive ssh is also reasonable.

To be honest, apart from the annoying "porn filter" stopping (SFW) sites at random (easily worked around) this is as good as my ADSL connection, and a perfectly good backup to ensure I never lose connectivity even if the DSL goes down

5.0 out of 5 stars A great screen, 29 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a great screen. Large. Deep, rich colours. Fast response. Incredibly lightweight. And really pretty cheap as well - I got it for 144 and it arrived in under 24 hours.

There are some other reviews saying the stand is flimsy. They might have changed the design but it seems stable to me.

Adjustable Ladder Stand off

3.0 out of 5 stars Missing parts, 3 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was missing 4 "1/4 UNF" wingnuts. These are some US standard nut and are unobtainable in the UK. In the end I had to make a wooden panel with coach bolts to attach the ladder to the stand off, which worked. After that palaver, the thing works well and is definitely safer and easier to use for painting the eaves of the house.
