3.0 out of 5 stars A film which doesn't seem to go far enough into explaining its main character, 9 Jun 2008
I was never quite sure where this film was going. And the ending seemed to leave little in the way of hope or resolution which I always find a bit frustrating. The film is not gratuitously explicit - in fact I don't think the portrayal was probably deep enough to explain why the main character was identifying with the S/M culture in the first place. Maybe I need to watch the film again but there seemed to be little explanation of who the main character really was or where he was going or if he was just drifting aimlessly and rather nihilistically. Probably needs a second viewing to appreciate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent German language film with clever and imaginative plot, 9 Jun 2008
This review is from: Hilde's Journey [DVD] (DVD)
This is a very clever film - really keeps you wondering what is going to happen and the ending is nice. What is going to happen to Hilde's ashes? Will he get his final wish or not? I enjoyed this very much. The two men who loved Hilde are very different and the characters are very well developed by the actors. The family dynamic is also interesting and well portrayed. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic film about brotherly love and understanding, 7 Jun 2008
This review is from: Son Frere [2004] [DVD] (DVD)
This is a very moving film. Love between brothers is something very special and this film captures it very well. For anyone who has a gay brother or is a gay brother, it's even more poignant and moving. Losing a brother is a very hard thing in life and this film will give a lot of reassurance to anyone going through that. Beautifully acted and shot, a classic French film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maybe not what you think!, 7 Jun 2008
Wow! I thought this was going to be an easy listening collection of subtle variations on the main Brokeback theme. It's not! This is a club version of the theme with a heavy beat and I loved it! Real fusion of the music from the mountain with an urban theme.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful French language film about coming to terms with being gay for everyone, 29 May 2008
A very difficult film in places - the level of family rejection sometimes is quite terrible and shocking. The difficulties in overcoming this for all concerned is undoubtedly true to life for many families, but the fact this process of understanding and coming to terms with being gay does eventually work out and that there is a very clear feeling of love between the couple from the beginning to the end of the film, despite their own tensions (caused by both the self and familial rejection) make this a thoroughly captivating film. The film remains realistic though - people cannot adjust to everything overnight and total understanding and acceptance probably will never happen for many in the family - they'll get used to it but there are compromises to be made in one's dreams and hopes as a parent and one's expectations of straight family members if you are gay. The two attractive leads are excellent in their roles. This is a typically wonderfully made and acted French film, with beautiful photography, a real sense of atmosphere and place and a realistic portrayal of human beings and their inter-relations. Highly recommend to all who like great French cinema and moving and thoughtful depictions of gay life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend this - a really uplifting film, 28 May 2008
This review is from: Big Eden [2001] [DVD] (DVD)
I loved this film. It made me feel really warm and positive - which is not that common when watching "gay" films! It felt great to be absorbed in a community where everyone was mature and sensible in their attitudes. You can really identify with the main character returning to his home community from New York and his gradual loss of self-isolation as he is brought out of himself by his friends and family and finds love. For anyone who has left the rural/small town community for the big city and the freedom (and sometimes loneliness) of life there I highly recommend this film. This is an important film - pushing boundaries, giving life perspective, reminding us of the significance of family, friends, where we come from, love and death whilst being reassuring, warm, funny and ultimately very positive about being ourselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyable, 28 May 2008
This review is from: The Trip [2002] [DVD] (DVD)
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It is generally feel-good but I did find myself welling up a couple of times. The leads are good looking, good actors and the supporting cast funny and great to watch. Definitely recommended to those who like an enjoyable gay film with attractive cast, some laughs and some sadness rather than a lot of violence and doom and gloom! (Some of the 70's wigs are a bit scary though!). You'll really enjoy this film!
