We Love Color: 16 Iconic Quilt Designers Create with Kona Solids
by Provost and Professor of English at Wheaton College Massachusetts and Professor of English Susanne Woods
Edition: Paperback
Price: £22.98

4.0 out of 5 stars we love colour, 2 Nov. 2012
I'm a huge fan of Kona solids, great colours and made from good quality opaque cotton. The designs are all well explained and beautifully laided out. The book has 16 quilts all beautifully written, easy to follow designs and a brilliant start for any modern quilter. It also has some more challenging designs that would be perfect for the more experienced. The projects include precision piecing, improvisational piecing & quilting and appliqué. A great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars over the rainbow, 5 Sept. 2012
There's no place like home? Well with Everything Oz, your home could be Oz-ed! This is the second book by Christine Leech and Hannah Read-Baldrey, the first being the lovely Everything Alice. There are some very cute softies to make including a Dorothy rag doll, complete with pinny, basket and lion mask. Puppets, peg dolls, character paper dolls, even a full size scarecrow - handy if you have the odd field of corn! The bran new brains muffins are a brilliant, delicious and easy to bake breakfast muffin. There is a very cute pinny to wear while conjuring up all the lovely bakes in the book. Everything Oz is a fun book for children and adults, a great Christmas gift or perfect accompaniment for a visit to The London Palladium. And maybe a slice of cake after?

5.0 out of 5 stars Hexa go go, 19 July 2012
I love hexagons, always have and when I saw the front cover of Tacha Bruecher's book, I just had to see inside! This book is based around English paper piecing, Tacha says that hexagons are quilting's answer to knitting. The book starts off with an outline of what English paper piecing is and how to choose fabrics, set blocks, print or stamp on fabric, getting started and template making. The Cat Tails Quilt 70" x 92" is just fabulous, vibrant colours and mixing up machine and hand piecing. The instructions are clear, well written and full of helpful tips and design notes. Large and small projects, hand and machine sewn, so lots of choice on what to make - depending on how long you want to spend making something. I think my favourite quilt is the Over the rainbow quilt, a perfect rainbow in fabrics. It measures a whopping 112 inches square and the hexs are 1 inch, isn't it stunning? Perfect for some small and precious fabrics that you may have saved up. There is a Modern Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt, a modern twist on the traditional Grandmothers Flower garden, with added coin strips and sashing. In amongst the quilts are some free form projects, again beautifully explained, a zippered pouch, needle book, table runner and Christmas project. For the patriotic amongst us there is an Union Jack and Stars and Stripes quilts - perfect to the Olympics! Many of you will know Tacha from Fat Quarterly and her fab blog or Flickr. The book is suitable for any level of skill or time commitment, using both modern and traditional designs. You will also find that English paper piecing is the perfect antidote to the modern world a real stress busters as well as stash buster! A must for anyone wanting to English paper piece or just be inspired by the fabulous designs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Minimal by Alissa Haight Carlton, 21 Mar. 2012
This is a real visual feast for anyone who loves bold colours and a fabulous new modern approach to quilting. There are no small blocks or requirements to buy 20 fat quarters, just plain bold minimal shapes and therefore less fabric wastage. The quilts are constructed in larger pieces, not built up in a grid like way, often using the full width of the fabrics. The quilts vary in size from baby quilts and lap quilts to a 90 x 95 inch giant. Some requiring just two fabrics, the fabulous quilt on the front page uses just four. The tips are highlighted and the construction and cutting is visual - which really helps when cutting out. In addition two ways of machine quilting the quilts giving interesting results - all beautifully explained. However, the clear diagrams and well-explained instruction really do help to give confidence. With such an array of Kona solids (Robert Kaufman), Cotton Couture solids (Michael Miller) and Bella Solids (Moda fabrics) , amongst others, there is every reason to buy this wonderful book.

I listerned to the book, it is just brilliantly funny! One note of warning, be careful listerning on the tube or bus as I managed to frighten a poor chap by laughing so much!

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful!, 13 Nov. 2009
I borrowed this book from my local library, thinking it looked great but did I really need another cake book. The cupcakes are easy and delicious, oat and raisin cookies are delightful and the chocolate brownies are the best I have ever tried. Great instructions and I am now buying this fabulous book, a must have!!!
