2.0 out of 5 stars Dissappointed!, 17 Oct 2003
This review is from: People Are Strange (Audio CD)
I listened to her two albums ' Memories of a colour' & ' She closed her eyes' and found them to be two of the most beautiful and enigmatic pieces of work i have ever come across. So, I was probably a little expectant of the covers LP ' People are Strange'. I was even impressed by the songs she had chosen to perform however on first listening I just do not get it.
Yes, her style is bare, emotional but far darker than her previous studio albums and I would suggest that she must have coming from a depressing period as the music seems devoid of lightness. It may be good or different but it sounds like shes' been listening to the cure during their 'pornography' phase and in my personnel opinion it is no where near as enjoyable as her earlier stuff.
I don't mind listening to sullen, darker music such as lou reed, doors etc but why go there when she is so excellent at the breezy charming poppy stuff on her first two albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rutger Hauer at his best!, 14 May 2003
The film is compulsive viewing. The story is based upon a band of renegade 'juggers' on walkabout, welcoming any challenge eventually fighting their way to the top and in a quest to achieve their own personal goals.
A Jugger is a participant in this future game which is a cross between American football and the fictious sport featured in the film rollerball. The film is set in the future, with the five combatents being all having a part to play though the focus is on Rutgers' character and the female lead played by Joan Chen ( who was the pretty chinese women in Firewalk with me ).
The combat/sport scenes are very realistic and slightly graphically violent but hey, thats what the film is about but the linking scenes inbetween the showpiece 'games' tell a story of ambition, sturbborness and also suggest a certain sadness.
Excellent film, enjoyable on many levels, highly recommended as an action film and also very meaningful.
In my personal opinion Rutger was an excellent lead ( ref, Blade Runner, The Hitcher, Flesh and Blood ) and I don't know why he hasn't been more successful. I would have thought he would have made a perfect Magneto in the X-men series.
Seriously, rent it, buy it but watch it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful piece of music!, 21 Mar 2003
This review is from: Anticipation (Audio CD)
In my opinion this is Carly Simons best album. Ok if you're new to her stuff a better choice would be to go for one of the greatest hits packages however i strongly recommend any fan to dig a little deeper.
I think this was her third studio album and this is a woman at her song writing prime. Such a beautiful voice and the simple acoustic arrangements of these songs invite the listener to drown in her charms.
Stand out tracks such as 'Summer's coming around again' and 'I've got to have you' are stunning and the rest of the songs on the album are pretty good too.
This album is a delight to any-one who appreciates stunning folky/pop music like Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones etc. Try it and see for yourselves!

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS CD!!!!, 6 Sep 2002
This review is from: Snog on the Rocks (Audio CD)
I first saw Head ( by complete coincidence ) about 12 years ago in The Leadmill at Sheffield, not knowing what to expect. They were the most original and enjoyable live band that I had seen for a long tome and still remain the the best top 5 bands that I have ever seen live including the likes of Prince, Bowie, Pulp and the Longpigs.
The style of music is very tongue in cheek and I suppose is best described as PUB ROCK with a bit of sampling thrown in for luck. A bit like Bid Audio Dynamic mixed up with classic Dr Feelgood but basically miles better.
Most of the songs are originals apart from a savage version of Me & Mrs Jones which should only be played at full volume any and every time. The other songs although not exactly PC have an enduring quality having both sublime and ridiculous themes which I think are not meant to be taken too seriously.
Any one who likes 'off centre' music especially Ween will absolutely adore this CD.
They do not make music like this nowadays, more the shame. Go out and buy, you will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cosmic Man!!, 21 Jun 2002
This review is from: Cosmic Thing (Audio CD)
The B 52's have always been on the fringe and have produced some of the most original 'alternative ' music from the mid 80's. This album is not typical early B-52's ( which may not be a bad thing ) as it is more commercial ( 'Love Shack' & 'Roam' ) and certainly very catchy dance/pop.
It does however retain the bands excentricity and in my personal opinion it is a must for any one who doesn't already own it!
'dance this mess around' is a complimation of early stuff which is good value, a greatest hits sort of thing but to delve a bit deeper, Cosmic thing is an excellent indication of album tracks that really tickle your tonsils.
Most tracks ( all?) produced by Nile Rodgers and Don Was which result in a refined yet abandoned crispness.
Listen and Love, man! I am living in Channel Z!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Doctor says ' Snappy early seventies rock!, 21 Jun 2002
This review is from: Ooh La La (Audio CD)
Feel good, pub rock with raw Rod Stewart vocals. This album evokes the feeling of early, earthy rock.
Stand out tracks are ' If I'm on the late side' ( listen for the fade out ) and the title track ' Oh la la '.
Very early album which some people may have over looked but this is an essential additional to any fans collection.
Other albums recommended by the Faces, 'First Step' and ' A long Player'.
Keep passing the open windows!
