The Longest Afternoon: The 400 Men Who Decided the Battle of Waterloo
The Longest Afternoon: The 400 Men Who Decided the Battle of Waterloo
by Brendan Simms
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent little book, 18 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent little book, which barely contains 100 pages in which the story is told, plus 30 pages of notes and index, plus 12 EMPTY pages...Apart from that a great story about 400 GERMAN soldiers who played a vital part in the fighting around La Haye Sainte. Great maps, great info, but a subject worth more pages. But definitely worth the money and a valuable addition to anyone's library on the battle of Waterloo.

This review is from: Fortress of War [DVD] [2010] (DVD)
Very mediocre war movie. And Brest wasn't a Russian fortress. It belonged to Poland before Hitler and Stalin occupied that country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner in the best Britisch tradition, 9 Jan. 2016
What can I say? Superb series like Foyle, Lewis and George Gently. And now Endeavour. It makes you ashamed not being British. ;-) What a joy to watch, what a privelege. Excellent actors, great stories and wonderful atmosphere. It simply doesn't get any better than this. Morse and inspector Friday are outstanding. O Engeland, please never stop making these series, they are such comfort in these confusing times.

Very poorly written. Not a biography, but an attempt to picture Model as a war criminal, which is clearly nonsense. I regret wasting my time and money on this book.

Justice at last. Whether it is Waterloo, Ramillies, Blenheim or Malplaquet, the British always have made their own version of history at the expense of their allies.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is simply the best alternate history around and believe me, 5 Sept. 2015
This is simply the best alternate history around and believe me, I know them all. A fight to the death between the Western Allies and the might of the Red Army. Addictive!

5.0 out of 5 stars I did enjoy this book, 4 July 2015
I did enjoy this book. It could do with more details on landscape and individuals (what do they look like and such, it helps to identify with the hero and to keep track with the characters). Although some more depth and detail would be good, I must say this is one of the better books on Outremer and the battle for the Holy Land. I'm looking forward to the next one of mr. Latham.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but too much bias, 5 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Hitler's Warrior (Hardcover)
I agree with the review by Pockets. The author is too present with his opinion, which is frequently disturbing and unnecessary. His sarcasm and ever present intention to let us know how he feels about it all, is causing damage to an otherwise well researched and well written book.
