1.0 out of 5 stars Not My Cup of Tea, even Slightly, 6 Jun. 2014

I didn't like the style of the writing and found this difficult continuity-wise. After reading a fair amount into this enormous book, I found it too implausible to continue. A friend claimed it had won some sort of accolade so I bought it on Kindle. It was a bad enough disappointment that after just over a hundred pages in, I'd go as far as to say this author isn't for me. Boring.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Read, 6 Jun. 2014

Another insightful and inspirational one by Alain de Botton. This guy really is philosophy for the ordinary person. He doesn't confound people with high-minded terms, but keeps it simple and puts you in the picture. He never disappoints and the titles of his books are usually clear and very indicative of what you're hoping a book will be. Brilliant author and a great speaker, if you're about on YouTube sometime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Travel Writing at its Best, 6 Jun. 2014

Norman Lewis controls the narrative in this book, to make for a clever blend of autobiography and travel writing. This title came recommended to me by my tutor ( I'd read the back of an alka seltzer box if he told me to). When a book is quite this well recommended at Uni, it's almost definitely a good read and this is no exception. Lewis handles the wonderful descriptions of his Aunts with remarkable tenderness and really captures the spirit of the time and place: North Wales as a kid. It's everything I hope travel writing will be: warm, personal and truthfully atmospheric. Highly recommended, if it sounds good on the face of it...you'll probably enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Curious Case of the Dog type story, 6 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Basically a story about a teenage boy who witnesses the death of his brother. This is all about how he and his family cope with the bereavement. It's interestingly written and clever in the narrative. I would describe it as a page-turner and enjoyed the story. This leaves me with a good impression of Nathan Filer, so yes I'd read him again. If there is any downside, it can be slightly monotonous in tone, in very much the same way as The Curious Case of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon. Many comparisons between this novel and that one, this one being the better of the two. Summing up in two words, recommended reading.

A great writer. This book is a satisfying selection of stories about how love can take unexpected turns. I'd highly recommend both this writer and this specific book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great PC, 15 Dec. 2013

I'm more than happy with this desktop PC. It's remarkably quiet and the graphics are more than enough, although I'm more the image editing/videography end, than gaming. I would recommend this if you're thinking of upgrading. It runs a treat on my 55inch screen tv with wireless keyboard and mouse. I can't think of anything bad to say about it.

I had to acquire this book as part of my Creative Writing degree Poetry module. Recommended by the wonderful Philip Gross, an inspirational tutor and Poet himself. If you want to break into Poetry, this is your book. It provides a flavour of many different styles and techniques. Buy it and it'll get to you, even if you're the hardest of wordy recipients :-)

This essay has inspired yet another for my coursework. A fascinating insight into the processes of illness. It might sound one dimensional but it isn't. She leans in more on the spirituality aspects. A remarkable way new way of looking at things.
