The Cambridge Companion to Medieval English Mysticism (Cambridge Companions to Literature)
The Cambridge Companion to Medieval English Mysticism (Cambridge Companions to Literature)

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful, if flawed, introduction, 8 July 2014
Anyone interested in the history of Christian mysticism either knows or ought to know the the growth of mysticism in England is important, and that England contributed a great deal to the overall development of mysticism. This Cambridge Companion aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the topic.
It divides the subject into five periods, each of which is covered by two chapters, one on culture and history, and the second entitled "texts". The culture and history chapters each presents an overall picture of the developments that took place in the relevant period, and covers the significant historical figures. These chapters are all of a high standard, and pretty much everyone will find new knowledge and/or understanding.
The "texts" chapters then discuss the more important texts written in the period, with, occasionally, brief extracts from the texts. But since the overview chapters have already mentioned these authors and their importance, there is in consequence a good deal of overlap, and not a great deal of direct interraction with the texts, or not as much as one needs to get a feel for the texts. It would have been better to have our attention drawn to the texts in the overview chapters, and use the intervening chapters to provide us with a number of extracts from the most significant texts. That would, at least in my opinion, given us a direct insight into the most important texts. As it is we never get the opportunity to make our own minds up, or get contact with the writings themselves, and that is a definite loss.
So this is a useful book, but one which could have been more directly informative.

Papias and the New Testament
Papias and the New Testament
Price: £7.33

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive, 9 Jun. 2014

Papias is a largely unknown figure in the life of the early church. He wrote a five volume book on the sayings and acts of Jesus and the apostles, which certainly included material not in the New Testament. Alas, the book is lost apart from places (24) where it is cited or quoted by other writers. Yet that is enough for us to know that the reminiscences of Peter, carefully recorded, lie behind Mark's gospel, and that John the beloved apostle - who Papias almost certainly knew and learned from - definitely wrote the gospel that bears his name, and probably Revelation too.
Papias, largely due to the fact that Ireneus grew to dislike his work, has been much neglected by scholars. Now Monte shanks has written a full, judicious and proportionate study of Papias, which is the best I've ever read about him. It is a book for scholars and clergy, since it needs a knowledge of New Testament Greek, though since most of it is translated then others could read it with profit, though they might find it hard going. But for its target readership, then I strongly recommend it as an almost necessary book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply superb, 5 Jun. 2014

They say things can change your life ; this has certainly. changed my lunches. This will, take two full size sandwiches, with ease. It heats up quickly: so much so that I often cook things from cold. It cooks quickly. So nothing takes moe than seven and a bit minutes from cold, and many things take only five. It doesn't seem to care what the filling is, and i've even cooked a Camembert using it. Cleaning is hardly needed - at most a wipe with a piece of oiled kitchen paper. It heats things evenly (though moist fillings are imho best turned half way through.
Someone has put a lot of thought into this, and it shows. Easily the best toaster I have ever used.

Dream Interpretation Ancient and Modern: Notes from the Seminar Given in 1936-1941 (Philemon Foundation Series)
Dream Interpretation Ancient and Modern: Notes from the Seminar Given in 1936-1941 (Philemon Foundation Series)
by C. G. Jung
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £19.96

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Angle on Jung and Dreams., 5 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In 1936-41, Jung gave seminars on children's dreams, and on classical theories of dream formation. The German publishers produced it as a singe work, but the English editors have divided into two parts, treating the children's dream separately (published 2008) and this is undoubtedly the better format.
In the first part, the emphasis is on papers produced by the members of the seminar, but with just the occasional question by Jung. But as the book develops, Jung shows himself more (chapter 8 onwards), and sometimes demonstrates a side of his character with a strand of sarcasm towards the participants, and we learn more of Jung's attitude to the dream.
This is not, to be candid, one of the classic texts on dream interpretation, but Jungians and those interested in Jung will definitely want to add it to their collection.

Awaiting God: A new translation of Attente de Dieu and Lettre a un Religieux
Awaiting God: A new translation of Attente de Dieu and Lettre a un Religieux

5.0 out of 5 stars Weil re-presented, 31 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Among Simone Weil's writings, Waiting on God and Letter to a Priest are among the best-known and the most-loved; so why a new translation? The answer is that this new translation is a lot closer to the rather individual way she wrote, and brings out her own particular voice more clearly. It is a very plain and literal translation, the result of ten years work.
For me, it shows how demanding Weil is, both in terms of the concentration one needs to follow her, and in terms of what she says faith demands. This is no easy version of Christian belief, but one that requires utter commitment on the part of the believer. It is also, however, a penetrating vision, one that goes to the very heart of belief.
I came away with renewed and deepened respect for Weil's understanding and insight, and I thoroughly recommend this new translation.

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent set of pieces, 30 April 2014

This review is from: Inside Conducting (Kindle Edition)
Christopher Seaman is what might be called a "journeyman" practitioner of his craft; never in the top rank, but never less than competent and satisfying. Each short piece looks at one aspect of conducting, and in plain, straightforward language, laced with good humour, explains the pitfalls, or what the orchestra needs from the conductor, or what a good conductor needs to keep in mind. Always readable, there is a lifetime of experience distilled in these essays, and anyone involved in music, whether player or listener will find something of interest or something that increases their knowledge and awareness. Highly enjoyable.

Apart from a tendency to use bulbs quicker than I would expect - it's been about one a month-, this is a stylish and very useful lamp. It does exactly what it says it will, and the range of brightnesses is very welcome in a number of settings. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty nice, 30 April 2014

This is a pretty glasses lanyard, and quite pleasing overall. The butterflies can get tangled up with some fabrics, and, like most lanyards of this construction, it has a tendency to work loose after a while. So 4 rather than 5 stars in my opinion.
