1.0 out of 5 stars a disheartenening experience, 7 Feb 2011
This review is from: Room (Paperback)
Unlike some reviewers I actually made it to the end of this book - a disheartening experience that made me wonder why I'd bothered. I am at a loss to explain the raft of positive reviews for this book - the protagonists in my opinion are 2-dimensional and actually provoke dislike and certainly no degree of empathy. The mechanism of having a 5 year old as the narrator is brave however it does not work given that the vocabulary at one moment is advanced and the next bordering dysfunctional - this character is not believable or indeed likeable. In the opinion of some the story remained in one's mind after finishing the novel - for me instantly forgettable. This is the poorest Man Booker shortlist title I have read to date.

2.0 out of 5 stars 2-dimensional and disappointing, 17 Sep 2010
The director Wes Anderson used a similar cast in this film to the one used in the wonderful Royal Tenenbaums. Unfortunately for this film an attempt at a similarly quirky comedy falls flat owing to 2-dimensional characters and a lifeless script. The Royal Tenenbaums worked owing to the wonderful Gene Hackman holding the film together as a cohesive whole - for me Bill Murray failed to do this in The Life Aquatic and added to the grossly overated Owen Wilson and Cate Blanchett's irritating diction Im afraid it didn't work for me. Disappointing.

3.0 out of 5 stars not so funny, 9 Jun 2010
I bought this title on recommendation by the Times. I found it generally amusing though one suspects not as funny as the author intended. The minutiae of detail given relating to the historical details of a myriad of amateur football clubs became very tedious leading to skimming of parts of pages that I generally don't like to do. On the whole a worthy attempt and superior to most football related titles.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Vietnam war in perspective, 19 May 2010
The perception of the Vietnam war (or as I discovered American war if you happen to be Vietnamese) is generally gained from American films generally showing matters from the American soldier's point of view. This slim volume edited by the emeritus Professor of History at the University of North Carolina features testimony from both American and Vietnamese sources dating from the historical run up to,during and in the aftermath of the war. It is invaluable as a means of discovering how and why it happened and who were the political, military and anti-war players. It places the conflict at a personal level and also as part of the big world picture. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars 6 stars - the greatest ever live recording, 5 May 2010
This live album is both Hawkind's greatest testament and the greatest live album ever. I first owned the original gatefold double album as a teenager in the 70's and have listened to it ever since. In turns eerie, threatening, hypnotic and thunderous no band has sounded quite like Hawkwind before or since. Any rock fan worthy of the name must consider this an essential recording in their collection - 5 stars really doesn't do it justice - definitely a 6!!

5.0 out of 5 stars a chilling prophecy from a scientific genius, 21 April 2010
this book along with George Orwell's 1984 should be statutory reading for every human being- this a chilling statement of what mankind has done to earth and the potential(probable) consequences - conventional scientific thinking bankrolled by academia and vested (commercial and political) interests has misled mankind for too long- the damaging blinkered 20th century views of science must be superseded by Lovelock's 21st century vision - that James Lovelock has never been awarded a Nobel prize debases and devalues that particular institution

5.0 out of 5 stars a page turner, 16 April 2010
not the genre of book I would usually buy - this was recommended by Channel 4 Book club. I was amazed that a biography could be more of a page turner than most novels. Wendy Moore is to be congratulated on achieving this with a story stranger than fiction. Thoroughly recommended
