The Art of What Works: How Great Leaders Adapt Competitive Strategies to Their Advantage
The Art of What Works: How Great Leaders Adapt Competitive Strategies to Their Advantage
by William Duggan
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting work on business strategy., 1 Nov 2014
I have just finished to read:” The Art of What Works”, and I liked it a lot.
The concept of Prof. Duggan, is that “Expert Intuition” may be a strategic tool by business organization, the way it was used by Napoleon to win his record number of battles.
The book shows how successful companies like G.E., General Motors, Marriott and others have used this strategy, to become leaders.
Prof.Duggan argues also that it’s more reliable than other strategic tools, but can be used together with other strategic tools.
There are many references to academic works on strategy, and they are explained in a clear way.
It’s an original idea, a very interesting, and I certainly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A promo for Linkedin, 3 Oct 2014
The concept of this book is not new: everyone is a brand, a business.
Having read many self-help books about business, I can't remember any original idea in this one.
This books seems to be written in part, to promote the use of Linkedin, in part, to justify why a young entrepreneur could earn billions of $, without inventing the cure for cancer. You can find better use of your time.
You have been warned.

Napoleon's Glance: The Secrets of Strategy
Napoleon's Glance: The Secrets of Strategy
by William Duggan
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A key to understand historical events, 2 Oct 2014
I have just finished to read this book, and I really liked it.
This book is recommended for history lovers: because it offers a key to understand past events.
The key, is Napoleon's glance, that is, the capacity to make the right move, at the right time, like a chess player, in order to win.
The book is well written, I was never bored, even when I already knew the story.
My only criticism to the book, is that the conclusion is too short, but since the author wrote other books on strategy, I shall have to read them, as well.

The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything
The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything
by Ken Robinson
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Full of promises, short of substance, 11 Aug 2014
Like many "How to" books, it's full of promises, but short of substance. The back cover is misleading: the book is not groundbreaking, and Robinson does not explain "how every one of us can find ourselves in our Element, and achieve everything we're capable of".

The Upside of Irrationality
The Upside of Irrationality
by Dan Ariely
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.19

4.0 out of 5 stars INTERESTING, BUT UNEVEN, 20 July 2014
I have given this book 4 stars, because I found it uneven. Some material was very interesting, some less so.
In particular, the relationship between management performance and bonus deserves a book, given its importance in the corporate world.
There were too many pages dedicated to dating on-line, on the other end.
I was also put off by the extensive mention of his rehabilitation program.
Overall, Dan Ariely is a gifted psychologist, but I preferred “Predictably Irrational”, his previous book, and I hope this one shall be revised in the near future.

Decisive: How to Make Better Decisions
Decisive: How to Make Better Decisions
by Chip Heath
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.19

5.0 out of 5 stars PREPARE TO BE WRONG, 17 July 2014
The book is well written, and the process suggested is simple to understand, based on four steps, and it's full of common sense. There are several interesting cases, used to explain different techniques that are useful to make a better decision.
The main negative of this method, probably, is that our brain was not made to take complex decisions with multiple variables and many subjects.
Therefore, as the fourth step of the WRAP system suggests: "Prepare to be wrong".

Inside the Box: The creative method that works for everyone
Inside the Box: The creative method that works for everyone
by Drew Boyd
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.98

5.0 out of 5 stars A VERY INTERESTING METHOD TO BOOST CREATIVITY., 9 July 2014
Hundreds of books have been dedicated to the subject of innovation and creativity.
Did we need another one? Yes, because everyone says that our society needs more innovation, and yet we are dissatisfied by the results.
This book has been written by a business consultant and an academic, and I believe that they found the right balance between practice and analysis.
This is not an academic book, it was written to teach creativity as a practical subject.
The authors introduce and explain five different methods to develop new products or services, with many interesting cases of application.
I recommend it to all those who need to improve their creativity process.
i found on Youtube a presentation of this method at Columbia University, New York, and the results were encouraging.
