4.0 out of 5 stars Return to form, 14 Dec 2014

Peter Grant meets Midsomer Murders, with quite a dose of Pratchett in the blend. Much less phoned in than book four, nice to see more of Beverley, good to see Peter accumulating perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous retelling of some very old tales, 21 Sep 2014

This review is from: Scale-Bright (Kindle Edition)
Beautiful writing, bringing the clash of divinities, the attractions of Hell, the tedium of Heaven, hi oppression and the power of daughter hood to contemporary Hong Kong.

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch as the rubber tautens, 20 Sep 2014

A better book in this splendid series than its predecessor. Learn the limits of the Spider and the Dragon, and how one big lie can bring down the Lord of Lies. Know the vengeance of a mother and a tyrant's darkest fears.

The Great Game: On Secret Service in High Asia
The Great Game: On Secret Service in High Asia

3.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive to the point of confusing, 3 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Great Game played out in many places across a century, and this book makes a valiant effort to address all of them and as a result jumps around between stories with different sets of characters in a way that gets quite confusing. A book to read with a notepad in front of you and a decent topographical map of Asia (at a resolution good enough to show passes) available: one of those where a map the size of a tabletop is actually more useful than Google Maps on your smartphone.

Might well be better to get this in paper form, because you really want to be able to stick a bookmark on the appropriate map while you're reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous description of a decade's work saving lives, 3 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a really interesting book about the whole subject of public health, based on a decade's work on HIV in south-east Asia (particularly Indonesia). You learn how difficult it is to pin down the problem, how everything effects everything else, the frustration of finding that the things donors are willing to fund are not the things that would actually help, and the ways in which being perceived as a mad Westerner can let you solve problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go to Kyrgyzstan! Mountains, Silk Road, friendly ladies running yurt-camps!, 3 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It does all you could want from a travel guide; I was mostly travelling with a tour group, so wasn't able to confirm much of the information on inter-city travel, but the small amount of local travel I did worked as the book suggested. Interesting description of the history and culture of a country which should be much more visited.

4.0 out of 5 stars but it's the reading equivalent of a nice slice of well-made sponge cake, 3 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It's not doing anything especially new or exciting, but it's the reading equivalent of a nice slice of well-made sponge cake.

4.0 out of 5 stars An old female lead to rival Granny Weatherwax, 26 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In a vaguely Indonesian world of jungles, water, and temples of significant shape, an old lady in whose way one really does not want to get unravels a cosmos-changing mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's just what you need to motivate yourself to take ..., 24 Aug 2014

It's just what you need to motivate yourself to take more exercise.

There are a few tiny problems that I found wearing it on a hiking trip around Central Asia: if you wear it while sitting on a bus on bumpy roads, it records exercise as if you'd been running hard the whole time. The altimeter is not at all accurate, and the thermometer is quite strongly influenced by your body temperature.

Full Fathom Five: A Novel of the Craft Sequence
Full Fathom Five: A Novel of the Craft Sequence
Price: £9.49

4.0 out of 5 stars Rather better than _Two Serpents Rise_, 24 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Rather better than _Two Serpents Rise_, perhaps because the characters we're following have a better understanding of what's going on underneath. The inspired-poetry and street-children plot lines are splendid.
