A Fart in a Colander: The Autobiography
A Fart in a Colander: The Autobiography

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good, 5 Nov. 2010
Roy Hudd is one of those performers who seems to have grown in stature over the years. He was so steeped in music-hall and variety as a young man he seemed out of tune with the "trendy" types on TV, but in the last couple of decades or so he's become a justly admired veteran comic, character actor and personality. His basic decency and fun-loving attitude always shine through, and this book is a welcome overview of his long career. There are moments of sadness, which are well told, but mostly this is a delightfully amusing account not just of his varied projects but also of a notable period in British show business. It is hugely entertaining.

What a collection, at such a good price. It's true this does seem to be a more basic version, in terms of packaging, but the important thing is the material itself, and the discs are very good quality - and a delight to watch!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 29 Oct. 2010
Ken Dodd is the Duracell Bunny of comedy, and he's got the teeth to prove it! This man is extraordinary. His gags just keep coming, and his delivery is flawless. A British treasure, and a gloriously funny man. This DVD is another great treat for his fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 29 Oct. 2010
This review is from: Right Monkey! (Audio CD)
What memories this brings back. Al Read was a wonderful comedian - he could conjure up whole situations and several characters with his monologues, and he was always so true and so funny. Clean, clever comedy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, 29 Oct. 2010
This is a brilliant history of the mills, providing the reader with a very evocative picture of what it was like to work in such places, under such conditions, as well as giving us a broader sense of how life was in that era. Well done indeed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable, 29 Oct. 2010
This is a real treat. The range of interviewees is huge, many of them are real classics and there are also some very entertainingly quirky ones (my favourite being the interview with Paul Johnson, who gets up and leaves his own house, mid-interview, after bemusing his interviewer with a few unhelpful grunts!). I'm amazed the book appears so hard to get these days, because every home should have one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fitting Tribute, 29 Oct. 2010
I very much like this biographer's style. He researches his subjects with great care, and he tells their stories with sensitivity and real insight. This book certainly does justice to the wonderful Mr Grant, both as a man and an actor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, 27 Oct. 2010
This review is from: A Jobbing Actor (Hardcover)
Having just read Graham McCann's fine new biography of John Le Mesurier, I realise now how many things Mr Le Mesurier either forgot or remembered incorrectly about his life and career, but this is still a delightful memnto of a dear man. It is very selective - it doesn't even acknowledge that his real name wasn't Le Mesurier, let alone tell us when and why he changed it, but there are some funny stories here and some very gentlemanly accounts of the various romantic crises that he endured.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, 27 Oct. 2010
This set is, I suppose, very good value for money if you consider that the likes of "Over the Garden Wall' (my favourite of the three here) would cost about £8 as a seperate disc, although I'm not sure the average consumer would be that impressed. The comedy still has an appeal to students of Northern comedy and, more generally, that period of British film making, but, to be more objective, it hasn't aged that well, and will strike some young viewers as slow and clumsy in places. Personally, I'm pleased with the box set because I love the likes of Jimmy James and Norman Evans and love seeing them even in these rather forced and hurried affairs, but if you're a more casual shopper, I'd be a bit wary. Having said that, I congratulate those who have rescued these films and managed to get them into circulation again - obviously a labour of love.
