3.0 out of 5 stars Why Is This Not A Book About Lenses?, 16 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is immediately disappointing in that it includes only 2 photographs of Lighthouse Lenses, when surely a book about the Inventor of the Fresnel system should be replete with examples of the variety and diversity of lenses that his genius enabled to be constructed. Though the text (presently unread) is illustrated with scale drawings, engraved pictures and the like, many of which are small and appear to be somewhat peripheral to the subject, the lack of photos of actual lenses is a great let down.

5.0 out of 5 stars OLD LP Re-issued? Thank Goodness for that!!, 14 Sep 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Let's get the first thing said right away-this CD is much much better than Ray's recent A.B.C. offering, that was not of much appeal at all. But I believe this is an old LP re-issued, but questions do arise. The recorded date given is 1975 + 2011, so I suspect the old tapes have been 'worked on'/over-dubbed. Moreover the muscicians pictured in the booklet include Terry 'Buffalo' Ware (who was on Ray's early CDs), plus Jim Herbst, Larry White and Clovis Roblaine, none of whome are listed as musicians on the rear of the CD-those names include Ron Sneider, Bobby Thompson, Shane Keister, Johnny Gimble, Bobby Emmons, and The Jewells backing vocals. The only constant is Ray Wylie Hubbard, and he is in good form, performing 8 of his own songs among the 10 recorded. Let us hope that Wounded Bird Records come up with more LPs like this from Ray's early years.

2.0 out of 5 stars DULL, DREARY, DEPRESSING!, 14 Jun 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Gurf Morlix is one of my favourite artists, so it is not lightly that I slate this offering, which is almost devoid of interesting instrumentation, and has endless streams of songs all of one mournful groove, which even on first playing become tiresome background noise. Quite simply this a CD you can safely pass by, unless you want to be bored to death! Come on Gurf, get your act together, you have done much better, and this is not what your fans deserve.

5.0 out of 5 stars S T U P E N D O U S !!!, 22 Jan 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This package stated the DVD is the 'Bonus' but in fact the DVD is so long and so good that it is well worth the price on its own, leaving the 2 CDs as the bonus! CDs 1+2 are of the live concert in Paris on Dec 5 2007, when Calvin, who is in superb voice throughout, is backed by Jeff Gautier, drums, Fred Payonne, bass, and Eric Sauviat and Gabe Rhodes on guitars, all of whome are in terrific form. The 16 tracks on the 2 CDs are also on the DVD, along with an unplugged 12 song concert recorded at Issy-Les-Moulineaux on 28 June 2009. Here Calvin, who looks very scrawny and aged but again is in top form, is ably supported by Manu Lanvin and Nikko on guitars. Finally comes a short interview segment, which has French subtitles when Calvin is talking in English, but does not have English subtitles when the band members are talking in French. Very rude that! But of no consequence when compared to the awesome value of 2 CDs AND a 161 minute long DVD. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not What You Might Think It Is!, 13 Aug 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Sing Me Out (Audio CD)
12 of the 13 songs on this CD appear on various other Kate Campbell releases, so you might think it is just a compilation, but in fact these tracks are recordings made with different musicians from those found elsewhere. Kate's singing, and the playing, is excellent throughout, and the songs are of such quality that she chose to re-recorded most of them with different interpretations. The only reason I have not given 5 stars is that these gentle acoustic versions do not have the immediacy of the tracks I first came to love, which are now the more familiar versions, but they are still most acceptable and desirable and very listenable. Indeed some of the alternate versions and the quality of the backing is already growing on me. One track (Would You Be A Parson) appears only on this CD, which I highly recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars Life As A Lighthouse Keeper., 6 July 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This keeper served 22 years in the Trinity House Lighthouse Service (mostly for the same period that I too was a keeper), and he recounts what life was like in those days, before the onset of automation and demanning, which left lighthouses at sea and onshore devoid of a human presence and a soul. There are a few small b/w photos. I regret that Gordon doesn't really get to the 'nitty-gritty' of the job, particularly as I know he is a jolly sort of person who could have told some good tales. But it is interesting to have another viewpoint to my own (and to Gordon Medlicott's in his book "An Illuminating Experience"). The book in question here is more modest, and only 117 pages. It is subtitled 'A Lighthouse Keeper's Essay' and that is about what it resembles, as the text appears to have been printed from a rough version and was obviously not proof read or corrected for grammar or the odd duplication, nor punctuation (which is annoyingly uneven and incorrect throughout).

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring!, 6 July 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am a great fan of Kate Campbell and have been very impressed by all her other CDs, which I play frequently, and which I would urge everyone to give themselves the pleasure of listening to. This disc tho' is sadly lacking in appeal. There is no spark, and the basic nature of all the tracks crys out for some interesting instrumentation to liven things up. Boring is the only term I can use to describe it, and I could hardly wait for it to end! When it did it was a relief, and I doubt I will ever play it again.

Curtis Potter Sings Willie Nelson

2.0 out of 5 stars BIT OF A SWIZ!, 2 Jun 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This CD has a photo of Willie Nelson with Curtis Potter as a cover pic, and another (better) photo of the duo appears inside. The front proclaims "featuring live vocal performance by Willie Nelson", so many folk, me included, will be sadly disappointed that Willie only sings on one track. I was hoping and expecting that this CD would be on a par with the excellent "Six Hours At Pedernales" CD on which both singers produced enjoyable music. Instead, though there are several nice tracks, there are also several on which Curtis is straining to reach the higher notes, and in other places his hesitant vocals are somewhat lacking in appeal when compared to Willie's original versions. In short this is a CD I would not have bought had I known Willie's involvement was so small, as even though he wrote all the songs I much prefer to hear him sing them rather than Curtis Potter!

1.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE!! NOT WILLIE NELSON, 14 Mar 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Chakra's Dream: Pilates (Audio CD)
In a major goof Amazon list this under Willie Nelson, whereas it is a compilation of 'new age' music by A.Hughes. The CD is called 'Chakra's Dream' and has absolutely nothing to do with country/outlaw Superstar Willie Nelson! I sent my copy right back to Amazon for a refund, annoyed that such an obvious error could be allowed to be put on Amazon-do compilers not even look at what they are listing?!!

3.0 out of 5 stars A REAL MIXED BAG!, 3 Mar 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this DVD new from Amazon as I thought that would guarantee a bona-fide release, but I don't think it is. It proclaims it is a 75th Birthday Celebration, which might be thought to mean a concert doing just that, but it is not! Moreover, on the back it says the product is unauthorised and is not approved in any way by Willie Nelson, or his past or present management. So there you have it-it's just another cash-in using Willie's popularity to make a fast buck but not paying Willie a cent. Normally I would not have contemplated buying it but have done so in order to advise other Willie fans of it's worth.
All the footage is of live gigs and Willie is well recorded and closely miked (both vocals and guitar). There are TV shows, concert halls and an auditorium, plus quite a bit from Willie's annual Farm Aid and 4th of July outdoor shows, and by and large these are the less appealing parts of the coverage. Highlight is definately a brilliant rendition of What Was It You Wanted and low spot is an excruciating duet with Arlo Guthrie who never even gets in key. The other 5 duets are more listenable. All in all it is an interesting mix of live performances from the past but with only a few standout tracks.
