5.0 out of 5 stars Superb work, 11 April 2015

Craig Evans' book is scholarly, up to date and very readable. I couldn't put it down. Evans deals with a number of questions- Could Jesus have been able to read? Did Nazareth exist? Where there synagogues at that time? How were Jews really buried? With archaeological evidence Evans answers these questions and more giving clarity and light to the first century period. Great buy, well worth reading.

Super book- Strobel deals with the criticisms from around the 90's onwards regarding the reliability of the New Testament and criticisms as to the usefulness and accuracy of its portrayal of Jesus. Experts are quizzed and helpful responses are given. All in the easy and accessible Lee Strobel style. Buy it and read it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Statements without facts backing them up is poor scholarship and not history, 11 April 2015

Have just had Kenneth Humphreys book through the post. Purely from an academic point you cannot view this is not as a serious academic work 1) He makes brash sweeping statements with no references to support his statements (eg. p11-2 Jesus was a common name, p14 we are not dealing with eyewitnesses p18 Jesus was reformed a hundred times pp 18-9 2) He is inaccurate when referring to supposed specialist scholars eg Bart Ehrnan who he claims is a mainstream historian (p12- 3) Neither statement is true- Ehrman is a professor of Theology and specialises in New Testament textual criticism. He is not an academic historian by any stretch of the imagination. Quoting from and using 'Skeptic' Magazine which' is explicitly devoted to the critical evaluation of paranormal and supernatural claim' (p105-6 3) is a clue as to the academic rigour of this book.3) Humphreys does not interact with other scholars in the field, available works or evidence from archaeology, geography or history of the time eg books by Hengel on the One Gospel, Habermas Craig and Bock on historical evidences, Evans Barnett Bauckham and not even the classic FF Bruce on Historical evidences or Van Voorst, Bownan or Tom Holland. 4) Humphreys also dismisses the New Testament documents in an off hand manner without assessing or examining it as any competent historian should. And that is the first 21 pages- it continues in the same vein. Not sure how an interview with the author is producing researched and well argued points to back the book's title.
Humphreys is out to write a book denying the existence of Jesus regardless of whatever sources, documents, historical information or knowledge exists. This is not an academic work to be taken seriously. Statements without facts backing them up is poor scholarship and not history. Humphreys is a committed atheist and has written as such. The statement is no where near proven.

Very disappointing. This lap top gas no cd/dvd drive and the advert pictures conceal this. Took it back.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unusual but not in a great way, 1 May 2014

Well produced, a great recording but a DVD of an opera without staging or any spectacle is surely a contradiction.

A great book. It may have few pages but it covers an awful lot. Very thorough thought provoking and deals with the person of Christ in a biblical non wordy way. Well written, clear yet not infantile or basic. An excellent work.
