5.0 out of 5 stars Great read about a very important issue., 27 Dec. 2014
This review is from: Prison Diaries (Hardcover)
Much needed dissection of the British 'justice' system. Hopefully some good will come of the opportunity this has given Denis Macshane to expose huge shortcomings in the present state of affairs. Perhaps a little too sardonic in style for some tastes, but I'm not asking you to like the man. I'm asking you to note his message.

1.0 out of 5 stars Self-obsessed, 6 Jan. 2014

This is a tale of an apparently self-obsessed prosecutor, willing to do anything to gain a conviction to advance his career. Badly written, totally unconvincing.

A truly gripping roller coaster of an account of one the most high-profile trials of the last 20 years. You will not want to put it down.

I do not wish to spoil things by relating their conclusion but it is clear that no amount of evidence would deflect the authors from what they wished to believe. Disappointing. An opportunity missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping, 5 Aug. 2013
This review is from: Blood Tracks (Paperback)
From the very first page, I was entranced by this wonderfully written tale of truth and deception, obsession and betrayal. How can I best put it? Well, it's essentially one of those stories that grips you from the outset and just won't let you go. To illustrate my point, I was reading the book in my garden, and became so engrossed in the plot that I only noticed, after I and the book almost got drenched, that it had started pouring with rain. Got the message? This is a writer who is clearly at the very top of her game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Proof is in the eating! Buy it., 3 July 2013

Despite almost not buying this book because of a questionable review (by a competitor in this market?) I plunged in. Best decision of my life, money-wise. Fun read as well. But that's incidental. Buy it, but don't use it to bet against me. Please promise me that!

I ordered this for my parents in law. When they played it, they found that only the first three of the advertised six episodes were on the disk. Faulty product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite wonderful!, 13 Feb. 2012
This review is from: Albatross [DVD] [2011] (DVD)
Beautifully shot, brilliantly acted and directed, this is a lovely script cast and played pretty much perfectly. If this isn't the type of film you'd typically watch, worry not - you're sure to love this, unless the odd expletive and sex scene rules it out of bounds for you. Word of warning: if you buy this expecting Lady Sybil from Downton Abbey, you'll be disappointed. If you buy it expecting a talented actress in Jessica Brown-Findlay, and a refreshing approach to drama and film-making, you'll love it. This is no gritty northern drama - it's so much better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unputdownable!, 8 Oct. 2011
If asked to describe this book in a word, I would call it 'unputdownable.' But it is much more. It is gripping, frightening, funny, intense, dramatic, dazzling. It is brilliantly written and keeps you thinking long after you have read the final sentence. It poses questions which will challenge you on so many levels. But it never deviates from moving you along from paragraph to paragraph in a kind of vice-like grip of rollercoaster emotion. It's like slinging a moral maze on the back of a thrill ride and hanging on for the sheer joy of it. A lot of books have challenged my very outlook on some of life's big questions, a lot of books have gripped me, a lot of books have been fun to read. But very few books have challenged me, gripped me and entertained me all at the same time. This book does it all. Wow!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jewel in the crown, 25 Sept. 2007
I have read a lot of books relevant to the so-called Dawkins debate but this is the jewel in the crown. Not only is it very thought-provoking and well argued but it is at the same time a very witty and entertaining read. If you have read Dawkins' `God Delusion' read this and make your own mind up. If you have not read Dawkins read this anyway. You will not be disappointed. A genuine and unexpected delight.
