Updated the review from 4.5 to 5 stars. The more you play it the more fun this console becomes. It is very different to the PS3 and xbox - having not used a Wii before it does take a while to adjust. But the games are a refreshing change - a new challenge to break away from the first person shooter dominated consoles. You really notice how good the Wii U is when you go back and use another console. The controller in particular is a massive advance.
I've never owned a Wii before so can't compare this console with the previous Nintendo offering, but I've owned an Xbox and PS3 for many years. The Wii U was bought for me as an unexpected gift - and it is good fun. As an older 30 something, I'm sure I'm not the target market for such a console but I've got to say that I've enjoyed having it. The only downside for me is the lack of games available - but this is a review of the console itself rather than its catalogue. There is a big update to download when you first receive it - after that it is all very straight forward.
-It looks great - its much smaller than either the Xbox or PS3 and fits nicely under the TV. Less obtrusive and ugly than the other 2 consoles. Its dimensions are only 17cm x 26xm x 5. So it a nice size to have in the front room. Its also really quiet on use.
-the controller is excellent - the screen is great and its incredibly comfortable to use. The controller was always going to be key for me. It looks too big on the box, but it actually fits into the hands really comfortably, the buttons are all in easy reach and it makes a nice feature. It has nice grips and really does feel like a quality build.
-The Nintendoland game included in the premium pack is a great way to familiarise yourself with the Wii if like me you are new to it
-The games are different - a breath of fresh air for me. I was getting fed up with the same old releases on the other consoles - looking forward to trying new things here
-The Wifi receiver is not very strong - this is a bit of a pain which led me to have to relocate the console as There is a big update to install on first use
-All the add ons (controllers, power packs etc) have bespoke connections. You just know that something is going to break over time and cost a lot to replace. The PS3 with (the now old style) micro Usb connections at least meant that you could replace things easily. But having bespoke power leads means, eventually, a new power pack may have to be purchased
Its certainly having some use by me. So far so good
