Read Michel Faber's outstanding novel first. (Perhaps then The Book of Strange New Things too, for contrast.) Compare what you imagine with this sombre, dark movie. The film is a stunning portrayal of 'alienation', but the curious effect of the book is to make you sympathise with the Isserley, the lead character, who in turn starts to feel sorry for her prey. The director said he didn't try to make a film of the book. I'd like to see that film, though this one is disturbing and Scarlett Johansson is hypnotic. Must read the book again.

I've liked the Orb since the 90s, but this is repetitive, with very little vocal or samples, not much to tell the 4 tracks apart, somewhat dispappointing. Nothing much for your imagination to play with in this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ace, 31 Aug. 2012

An outstanding book, the best I've read.

It has 3 threads and sets of characters, an elite tennis school, a halfway house for addicts and a terrorist group. They are connected via "The Entertainment", a movie so addictive and enthralling it kills viewers.

I read maybe four pages a day. Seldom does it fail to amaze me. I love Gravity's Rainbow and Cryptonomicon and will read them again to compare with this.

Scenes such as the Eschaton Game or Gately's fight scene protecting the hideous Lenz were absorbing. There's no brevity, but the examination of the minutiae of the characters' thoughts shows deep empathy.

It's a slow burner which keeps you warm for weeks.
