This review is from: In Defence of History (Paperback)
A powerful polemic by one of the foremost western historians.
Rightly on most philosophy of history students essential reading lists.
Hard to imagine not having it in my collection.

The End of History and the Last Man
The End of History and the Last Man
by Francis Fukuyama
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Still relevant !, 9 April 2014

Even if you don't agree with all of Fukuyama's opinions (or even any) one has to admire some of his insights and the clarity of his expression.
Capitalism should, of course, never be confused with Democracy - but as the author points out both ideals seem to be the most compatable with human nature, therefore the dominant ideologies... for now!
The end of History ? No THE text pointing us to a new era - definately!!
A must read for anyone with a wish to broaden their political, philosophical or historical horizons and frankly who doesn't!?

4.0 out of 5 stars Good mix of narrative, 'facts' and historiography., 9 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A rarity; a well written serious Historical tome enjoyable to Historian and layman alike.

Stone once again shows it can be done!! The whole book is well researched, well written and nicely presented, even the authors rather gloomy hypothesis regarding Europe's future and the potential return of fascism are well argued and one finishes the book with a definite sense of dread of his prediction of a potential era of "politics of revenge".

A useful comtemporary addition to any historians bookshelf.

This review is from: Alone Together (Paperback)
What we all really know but are a little afraid to admit.
Whilst Sherry Turckle - may not have all the answers, this book, no doubt, will ultimately be seen as an important catalyst for further debate and may just give us the strength to put our own collective heads above the parapet out say out loud that developments and modernity are not always 'for the best'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neo-Modernist / Impressive flag bearer, 27 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Another compelling polemic, from one of the UK’s most accomplished practitioners of this ever controversial, incessantly navel gazing discipline. Evans once again takes on an aspect of history so common place as to seem inconsequential yet by use of persuasive argument and apposite research gives it the twist it needs to be both illuminating in its own right and revealing about modern western societal attitudes. Well done again Richard Evans although a slim volume – certainly worth waiting for and an enjoyable read for historian or layman alike.
