5.0 out of 5 stars Rashid delivers again., 7 April 2012

As I have come to expect from this author, this is a thought provoking, intelligent and very informative update on the situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is also a deeply personal account with a compassionate voice reasoning for democracy flowing through each chapter. The final chapters where Rashid contrasts the irrationality of much of what is happening in Pakistan (the blasphemy law being an extremely illuminating example) with the potential of developing as a balanced nation state along the lines of Turkey, with good trade relations with neighbours and working democratic institutions, tie many loose ends together. An impressive and very acessible book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not too impressed, 23 Jan 2012
This really didn't work for me - way too convoluted - very hard to suspend belief and go with the flow of the story.

A really well made documentary. I don't agree with the idea that no governments are doing anything to protect the environment, but other than that, this is a fantastic film.

This is a deeply touching work of art. Managing to craft something this beautiful from something so vile is an astonishing feat.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's all so familiar!, 19 Aug 2010
Other than being an excellent work in its own right, this book has the kind of depths that allows fruitful comparisons to modern conflict in Afghanistan. A very sharp mind at work with an incisive understanding of human psychology make this much more than a book about war.

If nature is your thing, this warm and incredibly well made documantary will be a joy to watch. Following otters in Britain today intertwined with the story of Tarka from a time gone by and the lore to be found in that story, the film is both informative and deeply poetic.

I have watched this many times over by now and still find it moving, powerful and convincing. This documentary is what I would imagine Imperial Life in the Emerald City be like as a film - an eye opening contribution to the reporting on this tragic conflict.

This is a gem - especially the first half, using wideranging primate data to argue for the importance of coperative breeding in shaping human evolution. If you liked her previous book you will be sure to enjoy this one too!
