3.0 out of 5 stars Me too - not so much., 3 May 2013

I am a huge Mitchell fan but this was the one that got away. The plot is thin and the characterisation superficial. Sure, the sex is gay and hot and the two heroes, Jamie and Gavin, have huge potential. But, somehow, their characters are never allowed to develop, so that they go from sex buddies to love of each others' life without it being clear how. It's a good read but left me dissatisfied. Hope it's just a blip in a hitherto faultess series of great gay love stories.

If I Told You So
If I Told You So

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific book, 30 April 2013

This is a fun and heart-warming coming out story, told in the first person by Sean who, at 16, comes out to Becky, a sassy New Yorker who is sharing Sean's New Hampshire summer vacation job. How can Sean bring himself to tell his Mum he is gay, let alone his dad and his girlfriend? What do you do when your heart is broken by a guy two years older than you?
Timothy Woodward tells the story with humour and insight. Sean is attractive but not incredible and Woodward perfectly captures those moments when you think your secret is too big to share and when you will be exposed as the only gay person in a hundred-mile radius. Woodward also handles the inter-generational stuff well and all the characterisations are spot on. All in all, a great read.

Julian Clary was not on my reading list. But I loved the cover of the book and someone said it was a really good read. They were not wrong. It is stylish, witty, original and clever. Above all, Julian Clary can write. His characters are vivid, their dialogue credible and his power to create a mood, be it erotic or elegiac, is brilliant. It is a rattling good story too, evocative of time and place and he carries off what could be the totally implausible setting of a haunted house across the generations with complete success. I am now embarking enthusiastically on his other books.

4.0 out of 5 stars An imperfect book, but irresistible., 13 April 2013

This review is from: Up In Arms (Kindle Edition)
Judging by previous reviews, this is a book that arouses strong feelings for and against. I completely understand the criticisms: unreal dialogue, cheesy heroes, too happy-ever-after to be true. But I have to admit I was captivated by it. Reed and Trevor are very sexy and there is something irresistibly appealing about the serial one-night-stander (Reed) who falls head over heels for the gay newbie (Trevor) who just happens to be both tough and tender. The sex scenes leave more to the imagination than others of the genre but I guess most of us get the mechanics already and the emotions of intense passion, life-changing love and the fear of loss all carry their own powerful erotic charge.

Bel Ami's Secret Eye
Bel Ami's Secret Eye

4.0 out of 5 stars Sexy and suggestive., 11 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Bel Ami's Secret Eye (Hardcover)
If you are a fan of the boys of Bel Ami, and which gay man would not be, then you will savour this book. The guys are attractive, relaxed and erotically charged and Melo's soft-focus, granular pictures heighten the impression that you have come on private and intimate moments - as well as some where the guys are clearly showing off - with a lot to show off about. From its earliest days, Bel Ami has combined youth and fun in a way which gives an impression of naturalness to the action. That illusion of something spontaneous, rather than contrived for the camera, is a quality which this book also captures.

2.0 out of 5 stars I lost the will to finish it., 10 April 2013

I could not get past the weird grammar (lots of short sentences without verbs) the random nature of the musings sent back to the narrator's ex-lover in Australia and the lack of anything to make me empathise with the narrator in the first place. This is a book which needed a skilled and rigorous editor to turn it into something readable.

Safestud
Safestud
by Max Exander
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant erotic book - of its time, and timeless., 7 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Safestud (Paperback)
Paul Reed, writing as Max Exander, published this book in 1985. It is a fictional diary of gay erotic encounters in and around San Francisco as gay men came to terms, for the first time in their lives, with the need to have safe sex. For those of who have lived in an HIV world, the book provides a fascinating insight into how gay men first experienced sex with condoms; or the imaginative ways they used group sex to re-create the erotic charge which they feared would otherwise be missing from safe sex. But this is not a clinical analysis. The guys and the sex are hot, and if Reed's intention was to convince his readers that safe sex could be as exciting as bareback sex had been, then he did a great job. This is a book which could be inspirational for anyone today who thinks safe sex is inevitably second best.

3.0 out of 5 stars Clever, interesting but weird., 4 April 2013

This review is from: Subject 19 (Kindle Edition)
Joel, a young, gay, insecure university student, signs up for a medical experiment. But the experiment turns out to be the perverted brainchild of a sick, power hungry villain, who subjects Joel and other young students to a form of sexual torture. This wholly unappetising scenario is relieved by clever writing, some good gay sex and a burgeoning love affair between Joel and fellow victim Sean. But the book is too weird to be recommendable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hot, sexy and seductive., 29 Mar 2013

You don't have to like BDSM to enjoy this book because it is more about the tough but tender heroes, Damon and Tanner and their fantasies than about any nasty stuff. The two are army or ex-army guys with a hard surface and a soft inside. The drama is page-turning and the sex a turn-on. I look forward to the next four books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly unusual and surprisingly captivating., 27 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Jumbo (Kindle Edition)
A story of a guy with a tiny dick and a complex about it is not the stuff gay wet dreams are made of. But this story is a winning one because Jumbo, its unlikely and sarcastically named hero, is a real human being and his mixture of self-confidence as a successful swimmer, and insecurity because he is not well endowed, is entirely credible and portrayed with sensitivity and an acute observation of human psychology. The story is a love story but, if its ending in inconclusive, that too is no more than a reflection of life. This is a snapshot of the lives of late teenagers and the mix of testosterone, cockiness, lust - and insecurity - as well as the interface between the teenagers and their equally (and credibly) dysfunctional adult relatives, are memorable.
