4.0 out of 5 stars Solidly built and attractive - Great value for the price, 18 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought this as a guest bed and for the price I wasn't too sure what to expect, however I was very pleasantly surprised.

The bed is very attractively finished in white eggshell and is a classic shaker style. When assembled, the frame is solid and sturdy. As someone with reasonable DIY skills I found it easy to put together, but as many previous reviewers have indicated, you will need a decent power driver to make the job manageable (and avoid severe arm ache!) as there are lots of screws and bolts.

Altogther very pleased with this purchase and are considering buying another for the second spare room.

Great item purchased for my brothers birthday for his new outdoor pizza oven. Long reach, sturdy blade, and even comes in handy for controlling kids if you tell them it's your new "naughty boy smacker" ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars A voyage of discovery into Vaughan-Williams chamber music, 1 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have been looking for a recording of "six studies in English folk song" in its original piano/cello score and this did not disappoint. The cello playing on some of the pieces is truly heart-rending. The additional pieces such as the Phantasy Quintent are a voyage of discovery into Vaughan-Williams somewhat lesser known chamber works. Beautiful, soulful playing from the Nash ensemble and a high quality recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars from Gloucestershire to the Spanish Civil war in wonderful allegorical prose, 5 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Possibly the best book I have read in 10 years, Laurie Lee's autobiographical trilogy takes us from his childhood rural idyll of Gloucestershire, through his carefree wanderings through England and Spain as a young man and finally to the desparation, savagery and ultimate futility of his time with the international brigade in the Spanish civil war.

The book is marvellously written in Lees's economical yet wonderfully descriptive style of prose, adapting gradually from describing childhood village life In the 1920's to the terse evocation of a bombed out, half-starved Madrid in the winter of 1937. Lee's use of metaphorical characters such as the ageing sentimental squire representing the last days of a semi-feudal English countryside or the backsliding Russian who abandoned him in the face of the enemy (Stalin's Russia abandoning the 2nd Spanish Republic?) is masterful.

A unique perspective on life in the early 20th century set against the backdrop of a world that was changing irrevocably from a social and political perspective.

4.0 out of 5 stars Robust, reasonably pricedalternative to Official Apple USB, 25 April 2014

Looks much more substantial previous iPhone 5 leads I have purchased, only for them to fail after a few weeks. I hope this one has a longer life, it looks much better quality. The LED indicator to show when your phone is fully charged is a novel feature.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst book I've ever read by Cornwell, 8 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I finally limped to the end of "enemy of god", mainly in the hope that the last book in the trilogy will be better. Cornwell is at his best putting flesh in the form of characters on the bones of history, but this is just an aimless ramble through a few apparently unconnected ancient Celtic legends.

The portrayal of Christianity in this book is particularly annoying. Cornwell often writes his villains as evil priests or sanctimonious holy men, and no doubt his upbringing and now atheist beliefs influence this. Unlike other series though, this book is a childish 400 page rant against Christianity. For example pagans "march" but Christians "scuttle". It just becomes irritating, not because it offends any beliefs of my own, but because it's unbalanced simplistic prose.

I hope Excalibur is an improvement!

1.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Music, Terrible quality download, will be seeking a refund from Amazon, 20 Feb. 2014

Download from Amazon is only 116 kbps vs usual 256 kbps. Annoyingly poor quality as a result and hardly listenable to. Will be seeking a refund from Amazon, as I will have to go out and buy it on CD.

Billie Godfrey - The Eden Tree
Billie Godfrey - The Eden Tree

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic debut solo album, 18 Feb. 2011
It's a criminal waste that someone with the vocal talent of Billie Godfrey isn't a major star whilst we manufacture and worship mediocrity via shows like the X-factor.

I first became aware of Billie when tempted by nostalgic reasons to attend Heaven 17's Penthouse and Pavement 30th Anniversary tour where she shone on on both H17 numbers and covers - River Deep Mountain High stands out in my memory as the moment I stood back and thought "This girl can wail!".

However, the power vocals you hear on the new version of H17's "Temptation" (Check out the performance on Jools Holland via Youtube) are only a fraction of her performances on The Eden Tree. What I love about this album is it's variety. From the opening lullaby of "Hush now" to the closing joyous gospel tinged "Leave me on a high", every track in between is an individually crafted gem.

Particular favourites are the the soulful bluesy title track, the haunting, wounded "In exile", the up-tempo soul "Until you love me" and the laid-back jazz of "Let's go back".

I bought this album on a cold January evening and was mentally transported by it to an open-top car on a July afternoon! That's how I would best describe it - a summers day in a download!

5.0 out of 5 stars A legendary album for good reason...., 28 April 2010
I discovered Bill Evans via the well trodden path from "A Kind of Blue", but it's only after listening to the legendary 1961 Village Vanguard sessions, live and in the raw, that I feel that I can begin to appreciate what he was all about. Evan's playing on this record is poetic, other-wordly, impressionistic brush strokes of sound with all his classical influences, particularly Debussy, on display.

The sets also feature the last recording of the Virtuoso Bassist Scott LaFaro, a few days before his tragic death. LaFaro's extravagant freestyle playing is almost a reason in itself to buy the record. Paul Motian on drums is also superb, for long periods syncopated with the piano rather than bass, at times almost imperceptible with the most delicate brushwork.

A highly recommended seminal recording - Treat yourself!
