2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't really get off the ground..., 3 April 2014

I was so excited over a new Almodovar film, but it seems it was all a false alarm... It was entertaining but it didn't really add up to much, it didn't seem to have much drama or structure, a lot of shallow characters and cliched scenarios, it certainly didn't strike me at anytime during the movie that any character had realised they might be dead in a few hours! I would have probably gave it three stars at a pinch but I think a lot of the reviews have been overgenerous here so it gets two.

Freddie McGregor sings Jamaican Classics over karaoke style backing. Pretty bland stuff and I did not think much of it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite as great as its made out to be, 9 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The actors and actresses deliver wooden performances and stilted dialogue, and the direction is somewhere between the primary school Christmas play and Carry On Cleo, who would have thought hams could go down so well in Egypt! Claudette Colbert is especially bad as Cleopatra, being more Lower East Side than Middle East and the male actors are often so camp that they seem like drag queens who have slipped into the wrong costumes. When it comes down to it the real stars of this film are the opulent set design and the stylistic lighting. The production is lavish and you can't help but wonder whether this would have been fantastic as a silent but in this form its more of a curio of 1930s popular entertainment. The blurb of it being "an erotic tour de force" are way off the mark although I do recall noticing Ms Colbert was surprisingly flat-chested during one of the many tedious scenes. Approach it as a piece of junk culture than high art and you are sure to find it enjoyable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great film, lazy presentation, 22 Dec 2013

It seems whoever "digitally restored" this version got bored half way through and gave up. In particular the last reel has lines all down one side!?! The blu-ray comes with a documentary on the restoration but I can't be asked to watch it and find out why they did such a bad job. ***** for the movie, * for the presentation makes an average of ***...

Ice Appliance Ice Cream Pro

1.0 out of 5 stars Totally worthless unit, 20 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've made 2 ice creams and 1 sorbet so far with not too impressive results. The two ice creams (chocolate and Baileys) had 500ml of a perfect custard to kick off with but 75 minutes later was still completely fluid with no hint of freezing despite reading -14C; finally giving up I put the mixture in the fridge and left an hour and had a reasonable product, though no different in quality to one where you freeze the bowl first. The sorbet (lime and passionfruit) again went down to minus double digits but ended up in the freezer in a liquid form. When I pulled the bowl out it struck me that the -15C reading felt more like +5C (next time I will verify this!).

On the plus side it is quiet but I would prefer something noisy that did its job!

----------

Having now tried 6 times with this unit I've came to the conclusion either (1) I have a faulty unit or (2) it is ineffective in doing its job. Its last effort was 350ml chilled custard, 2 hours, about a tablespoon full of thickened product on the base of the cannister. Following instruction manual we put it in freezer to complete but what resulted was effectively hard frozen custard. This is a piece of junk if you ask me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Yawn..., 13 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Tries too hard to shock, I really couldn't see the point. Animation was weak and flipped between styles without any particular reason except to make some pseuds think it was cutting edge. Voices are really bad, sounds like they found a couple of crack hoes with tourettes to do it. If hearing someone saying a rude word makes you giggle uncontrollably and you have a 3 second attention span you will love this...

3.0 out of 5 stars Stupid packaging!, 29 Nov 2013

No idea what they were thinking about but putting 4 DVDs in something slightly bigger than a shoebox is idiocy at best. So you get a bunch of postcards and a book too, whoopy-fun-doo...

Garmin Swim World Wide Pool Swimming Watch
Garmin Swim World Wide Pool Swimming Watch
Price: £104.50

4.0 out of 5 stars Happy with it but its not perfect..., 2 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
On the plus side:

95% of the time it is correct
If you have to pause, through choice or otherwise after a few seconds it stops the clock
Uploading is very easy and Garmin Connect website very straightforward
Gives a beep when you start it which is useful as buttons can be fiddly

On the negative side:

When something goes wrong, such as you have to manoeuvre around someone it sometimes miscounts
Screen is too small so seeing what is happening on the fly is pretty much impossible
Looks like a cheap £5 Casio digital watch; I can imagine it not lasting long if you use it out of the pool too
Sometimes detects strokes incorrectly

I'm generally happy with it and would recommend it as long as you only expect it to record your time and the number of lengths you do.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the easiest thing to use but produces good sound, 23 July 2013
I've had this a few weeks now and finally figured out how to get sound in as well as out (which in turn took a long time to figure out how to get sound out in stereo!) Its a horrible product to use, about as user unfriendly as you can get. There is no on-off switch, you have to shut your Mac down and unplug it. Once started you have to start the Focusrite software to route your inputs and outputs, then you have to do the same in your application (I mainly use Ableton Live), plug and play and "it just works" are completely alien concepts to Focusrite. When you have done all that you're up and running but it should be much easier in this day and age. Take note that the number of inputs may not be as many as expected as stereo counts as two inputs and it has optical in/out which you may not have use for. I have connected this to my Thunderbolt port, FW400>FW800 cable then FW800>TB cable, nice and fiddly. Firewire port on the Focusrite is wobbly and has caused problem for me once already, it would have been nice if they could have built it with a port that fits snugly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Improves sound quality, 17 July 2013
I'm generally happy with this, build quality seems very high and it does give an improved sound. I had some initial issues which were affected by HDMI cable but when this was switched it works fine. It is quite large but either has some kind of IR pass through or does not block the sensor as it is just level with the bottom of the TV on our Panasonic Viera. I bought this direct from Philips with a 35% discount birthday code (you may be able to blag one by registering with a fake birthday!) and it had a UK cable included in the package as well as a spare plug if I wanted to switch the one on the Euro cable.

One annoyance I have discovered is that when you put your TV into standby the soundbar goes into standby, but when you turn the TV back on the soundbar stays in standby, so you have to switch it back on, then increase the volume to a reasonable level again. And if you turn the soundbar on before the TV the TV will use its own internal speakers and not the soundbar.
