1.0 out of 5 stars An hour and a quarter of rambling complaint., 13 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Five minutes of this self-indulgent, condescending tripe and you'll know just what David Attenborough sounds like with a hangover. This film pillaged every B-roll house in Britain and still couldn't come up with a compelling story about anything other than Davies' own self-directed hagiography. No story, no information, but beautiful images and lovely music (used mostly for heavy-handed ironic effect) and behind it all is Terence Davies, wheezing away like a drunk in the corner. Just excruciating. This is documentary filmmaking brought to the level of bad dentistry. Awful.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Epic History..., 13 May 2014

...brilliantly told. An engaging story, not just of railroading but of the fascinating ways in which a machine shaped an age. Zoellner is a terrific writer and this book is a great read -- perfect, in fact, for a long airplane ride.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful. In fact, I'm owed a star., 12 April 2013
You'd be better off having somebody describe Gerolstein to you. This is a terrible recording. Inaudible, random noise from the tiny recorder perhaps tucked away in somebody's pocket. Not good. Bad. Terrible. Awful. Worse.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this one, 18 Jan. 2010
An inadequate text. My students found it impenetrable (especially the philosophy of mind chapter), and I agreed with them. The writing is just impossible to read, students said, despite the presence in the text of zombies and a so-so sex joke. Random (if also slightly ironic) sample: "On the other hand, some have argued that folk psychology is a theory which successfully accounts how everyday communions with each other are conducted and, on the whole, such interactions are clear and well understood." Nelson Thornes have not performed well in producing this text and AQA's endorsement of the book is actually a bit shocking. Lacewing seems a better choice.
