5.0 out of 5 stars Fun while learning, 31 Aug 2013

We gave this to our daughter for her 8th birthday and she absolutely loves it. The slides that come with it are brilliant to get started immediately and learn to use the microscope effectively, and the started pack of equipment is perfect for getting going with other samples.
It's also excellent that as it has both top and bottom lights you can look at bigger objects without preparing a slide.
Brilliant product for children who are curious about how the world works.
I've given 4* for durability, because this isn't a toy, so whilst it is fun, there are fragile parts and it's not going to take kindly to being dropped.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pricey, and unsuitable p&p, 24 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The quality of this bag seems fine, although it hasn't yet been tested in term time.
I'd expected a higher quality though, for the price.
Most disappointing was the packaging - despite paying expensive P&P for delivery, it was sent in a box that was too small for the item, and one of the feet was sticking out of a rip in the box unprotected and scuffed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A scary delight to read, 1 April 2012
This review is from: Florence and Giles (Paperback)
From the very first page, this novel had me captivated by the unique (and surprisingly contagious) voice of the narrator, Florence. A bold and playful move on the par of the author which pays off beautifully.
Later, the book delivers real heart-stopping, monsters-under-the-bed scariness that had me turning the pages, anxious to find out what becomes of Florence and her entourage. The culmination was satisfying and dished up unexpected twists right to the end. A terrific novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars An intelligent and challenging read., 1 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It's hard to believe that this novel was written 30 years ago; it feels so contemporary. Possibly because the issues raised in the context of the story are still just as relevant today. But also because the underlying themes are timeless and possibly even more relevant the deeper we become entrenched in systems and received logic.

This is not an easy book to read, because the topics it covers, and the satirical approach demand plenty of engagement and thought from the reader. But it's a pleasure to tackle.

I first bought this novel for my mother, who suffered much more of the treatment seen in the story than I did, and also because it was possibly a pivotal moment for her in a shift from passivity at the hands of so called experts and their logical systems to asserting her rights and views as a woman and mother. A generation apart we both loved the novel.

The Birth Machine is an intelligent and challenging read, highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't show it to your husband., 1 April 2012
When going on holiday I offered this to my husband as his reading matter. He declined, he's not much of a reader. So I took it instead. The first night went like this:

Me: "Could I have my book back now?"
Him: "Yes of course. Oh my god, yes, ring pulls! Listen to this:" *reads extract*.
Me: "That's funny, so if I could just..."
Him: "Smarties tubes!"
Me: "Charlie, my book?"
Him: "Do you remember ice cream bricks?"
Me: *admits defeat & downloads something else for my kindle*

Moral of the story - don't show it to your husband.

Lyrical and richly descriptive, Vanessa Gebbie portrays the townsfolk of a Welsh mining village with affection and generosity, winding their tales (and those of their forefathers) together through the eyes of Ianto Passchendaele Jenkins - The Coward. This novel is bursting with humanity and hard to put down - a fully recommended read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding glory not in war, but in the human spirit, 21 May 2011
This review is from: Dambuster (Hardcover)
As with Robert Radcliffe's other novels, he uses the backdrop of war to explore the human condition. In Dambuster, bravery in all it's forms is top of the list.
The nail biting story of the Dam Busters is beautifully interwoven with the story of Tess, Peter and the mess left behind after their brief teenage love affair.
The action is gripping one minute and tear-jerking the next and the dénouement is both balanced and very satisfying.
A cracking good book.

I love this book. The photographs are beautiful, many of them heart breaking, and the short biographies are written factually and with kindness and respect. A wonderful book that my children love to read with me, poring over the differences between themselves and the other children of the world.
