1.0 out of 5 stars Poor, 19 Nov. 2014

Way too small for male hands - well mine anyway and I wouldn't say I'm blessed with massive hands. Also found very fiddly to use disc control in the hand grip.

4.0 out of 5 stars Abercrombie does it again!, 19 Nov. 2014

Very enjoyable read, not your usual tale of boy becomes hero to save empire. Characters have depth and flaws which make them all so more interesting. The ending chapters leaves the reader desperate to know more and I can't wait for book two!

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful but could be better, 19 Nov. 2014

For the'Heartbeat' sound ( a mothers heartbeat as if heard from the womb) the unit is worth getting. Our newborn really reacted well to this at times and found it soothing. However the other sounds on the unit are pointless and annoying! As is the units habit of coming on with one of the annoying sounds if it's knocked. Bear is still in box as we use the sound unit around the handles of the crib.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality & design - could easily be improved to be great product, 19 Nov. 2014

Quality not the greatest and we found that it easily chipped. The discs that hold the unit from rocking are poorly designed and come loose if moved too often, which means you can't then 'relock' it to stop from rocking without tightening the screw up with screwdriver.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling, disturbing and utterly compelling., 19 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have just finished reading this book and I want to read it again to make sure I've not mis-read it. The extent to which the Vatican Church is portrayed as a corrupt, diseased, vile and evil entity is disturbing. But what's more worrying is that it seems the Church has been this way for hundreds of years and which continues to this day. It seemingly knows no boundaries when it comes to protecting its own interests, murder being a regularly employed tool to cover up its many dark deeds.

This is not some sort of left wing conspiracy theory drivel, but a detailed factual account of the Church's depravities. The author shows how the various Popes since the early 20th century and the outbreak of First World War have manipulated people and events for the financial gain of the Church. It shows how how the machine that is the Vatican Church has destroyed lives to secure its own position & authority.

The relevations over the Church's involvement in the mass murder of Orthodox Serbs at the hands of Catholic Croats is staggering. Something like half a million during WW2 and all done with the knowledge of the 'Holy Father' and several Cardinals, whilst several priests took part in the acts of genocide. And where did the gold & wealth that was stripped from the Serbian churches end up...you guessed it....the Vatican.

There's more, from the 'business' established to help over 30000 nazi war criminals escape persecution and to start a new life in South America. All for a small price of course. The decades long involvement with the secret Freemason society's and the Mafia who together invested the banks money in money laundering, embezzlement, wire fraud, stock market fraud, insurance fraud and false accounting. All seemingly with the approval of the highest powers of the Church. Finally the stunning scandal that involved the Pope John Paul I deciding to clean out the criminal elements to only suddenly die the night before various people were due to be excommunicated.

The disturbing thing is that the Church carries on with these actions knowing it will never be held to account and therefore can literally get away with murder. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. You will never look at the Church or Pope in the same way again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as great as the first book but still a very good book, 10 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Like many of the other reviewers for this book, I was a huge fan of book one of Raven's Shadow, and read the book again before reading number 2. However I am also a little let down about the change in the structure/style of this book compared to the first, again like many other reviewers.

I was never a fan of the game of thrones series, I found the books in no way justified the hype. One of the biggest faults for me was the way that the story line was so badly divided up, so you would read many different characters perspectives and the timeline then jumps back and forth. This style is here in Tower Lord and I think the book suffers from it, certainly Vaelin Al Sorna goes from being the main character in the first book, to what feels like a support role to Reva in this one. Whilst I enjoy the fact the story has now exploded in scope now, with many new characters in play, it can feel like at times there's too many people to keep hold off to follow the plot.

I liked the way the character of Princess Lyrna develops, especially towards the end of the book and you can almost sense that her ruthlessness to protect her father's plans/dreams will play a pivotal part in the third book. But for the third book to be a true success like the first, the lead character needs to be Vaelin and we need less jumping from so many different pov's of so many different characters. And maybe give Master Soliss a bigger role, his dark humour was missed in the later parts of the book for me.

Overall though a great second part of the story - it was always going to be three or more books and I don't want it to end soon so I'm not complaining that this book has a slight 'filler' sense to it. I kept grabbing any opportunity to read more and more, and couldn't put it down which shows how great a read it is.

I think this is like many trilogy's, with the first setting the story up, the second has to pad the plot out so can be abit slower, with the third being the climax so hopefully the next one will be back to the high standard of the first. Don't read this without reading the first one though.
