Racing the Moon's Shadow with Concorde 001 (Astronomers' Universe)
Racing the Moon's Shadow with Concorde 001 (Astronomers' Universe)
by Pierre Léna
Edition: Paperback
Price: £16.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique solar eclipse flight in Concorde 001, 19 Feb. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a nicely produced and nicely narrated story about a unique astronomical experience, the longest lasting solar eclipse in human history. The author, a scientist who gave the major impulse to this adventure, tells how the prototype Concorde supersonic aircraft was converted into a flying observatory to fly along the line of eclipse totality and extend its duration to 74 minutes for the observers. Lena not only describes the history of how this was achieved and carried out, but illustrates it with historical and literary examples and photographs. This small book should be an inspiration for new generations of young would-be scientists.

This is an entertaining book, full of stereotypes and not to be taken seriously, but the author does not intend us to take it seriously. A good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great scientist with equally great outreach., 12 Nov. 2015

This is an outstanding book by an outstanding physicist who is also an outstanding popularizer, not a common combination. I have to admit that with my background in astrophysics and my previous knowledge, I did not learn much from the book, but I am sure that the majority of readers will gain a great deal. I also have to admit that Stephen Weinberg is preaching to the converted in his judgements of historical figures in physics, astronomy, and philosophy. I don't always enjoy being in such good agreeement with anybody! However I did enjoy the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Anti-wheat crusader., 12 Nov. 2015

This book is of interest and informative but I found its recommendations difficult to follow in practice. it is a book along the lines of wonder cures and wonder diets. Maybe it has good medical backing, but it would not be possible to judge this from the book itself. I ordered it on the recommendation of a friend. I guess that following the wheat-free diet it suggests might be of use as a trial but you would need sound advice from a number of sources before taking it up permanently. Also I am not at all sure that the prevalence of genetically modified wheat in the USA (the author is from there and the style is for a US audience) is so general in Europe, I suspect not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Revies of "In the Eye of the Storm" by Sir John Houghton, 10 Jan. 2014

This is a fascinating read about a unique figure in British science. John Houghton has been a leading international light in the effort to convince governments about the importance of limiting CO2 emissions in order to protect the Earth and humanity from the ravages of climate change. In the context, particularly, of the USA, his Christian perspective is one which stands at least some
chance of persuading the uncommitted that climate change is real. His autobiography shows the reader that Dr. Houghtons's background in atmospheric physics makes him a truly authoritative expert in the field. His combination of scientific rigour and
humanism is evident throughout the text. I do have a few doubts about matters he raises, but these are trivial compared with
the importance of the work he has done, and the need to continue it against the enormous power of the fossil fuel lobbies. I can
certainly recommend the book

There really is no need for me to review this book. It is a classic. Whatever one may say about the details, and the obvious biases
of the author, it is an unequalled way to become familiar with the main themes which have constituted philosophy. For me this
was a re-read of a book I first read more than 50 years ago! I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned much this time. I can recommend it
to anyone who wants to get an overview of philosophy, written from the point of view of the British-American school.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of "The Heart of Darkness", 10 Jan. 2014

This book is a reasonably popular introduction to modern cosmology. It is a historical introduction and this is its most positive point, as it leads the reader through towards the most recent discoveries in a gradual and educational manner. I have only one complaintabout it. The modern science of quantitive cosmology has advanced greatly in recent decades due in large part to the new possibilities for making the required measurements because of exciting progress in observational technique. The chief steps forward which were the discovery of the cosmic microwave background and the discovery of the accelerating universe, were made by observers. The book, written by a theorist, does not get the correct balance between theoretical and observational advances. Of course the whole of modern cosmology is underpinned by the glorious synthesis which is General Relativity, but modern astrophysics as a whole has been led forward by observations (quasars, pulsars, and the results I cite above are four of these key examples). So although the book is a good introduction to the subject, I found it biased in this way.
