5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 1970s Modern Soul dancers, 1 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Step Inside My Soul (Audio CD)
This is a great CD of 1970s Modern Soul style dancers ranging from smooth soul, soulful disco, steppers and sophisticated funk. The sound quality is excellent. It will appeal to fans of Expansion Records, Luxury Soul, 1970s uptempo soul played at Blackpool Mecca. Very enjoyable, the real deal.

2.0 out of 5 stars Music great, where's the rest of it?, 28 Mar 2014
This review is from: Muscle Shoals / O.S.T. (Audio CD)
The songs on this album are classics, however there simply isn't enough of it. Barely anything at all from Fame Records (thankfully there is a great box set on Kent Records and the singles are now being issued sequentially on CDs). This could have a been a wonderful 2 or 3 CD set easily and the CD doesn't do justice to a wonderful film.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, 26 Feb 2014
This review is from: Ten Little Pirates (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This book was colourful with nice drawings. it reminded of reading 'room on a broom' with my 2 boys and they would join in at the 'whoosh' sound. my nephew liked to shout 'aah' when it was said in the book which he found highly amusing.
A great short rhyming book with the added bonus of using numbers too.

Fantastic book for children of pre school age who will find it amusing, but be warned you may have to read lots of times as it will become their favourite book

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable reissue 70s soul, 5 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very good album by an artist who hit his peak early with the 'My Way' album that contains the classics 'Love Won't Let Me Wait', 'Loving You Is Mellow' and 'After Loving You'. The follow up album 'Jealousy' wasn't as good, the melodies are too complex and it didn't resonate with me on reissue recently. This album though is most enjoyable, the song writing is solid, the singing as good as always, the music is performed and produced to a high standard. Although recorded in 1978 this is modern soul rather than disco, Only the opening epic 'I Wanna Dance With You' moves from ballad to uptempo disco sections. 'Pretty Red Lips' initially sounds a complete steal from 'Me & Mrs Jones' by Billy Paul but soon becomes its own song. So all in all a welcome addition that will please fans of 1970s sophisticated soul as promoted by such as Ralph Tee and Andy Peebles. The artist enduring into the 1980s and had a dance-soul minor hit with 'I Believe In Love' on Society Hill with a more electronic sound and also had a 'boogie blues band' too. That first album was always a hard act to follow though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice on 70s southern and Philly soul songs, 4 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bettye Swann has a wonderful as heard first on her Money recordings (get the Kent CD of her recordings). This CD covers her less known 1970s releases at Atlantic, starting first with a gentle, lush southern soul sound and then proceeding to Philadelphia International style uptempo pre-disco soul. A few choice selections had made Modern Soul Philly Soul CDs in recent years and here at last is her entire output from that time. Everything here will be appreciated by soul fans, the sound is great, the songs sublime and the performances outstanding. I sound overly effusive but this is genuinely an album to treasure and return to. Life enhancing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid rare tracks from Fame label, 31 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Hall Of Fame Volume 3 (Audio CD)
Kent are certainly releasing everything they can land their hands on with Fame and is can become a bit 'samey'. Southern soul can lack the instrumental and production diversity compared to other soul styles so needs strong songwriting and performances. Inevitably this is not about Fame's best but rarest, so the buyer knows that before buying, it's strange to complain afterwards. Having been disappointed with the third George Jackson release which felt scrapping the barrel (though sounded better on repeat listening) this was a pleasant surprise. Almost all the tracks are completely unissued but the quality was good, it helps that there are no stripped down demos and that most of the tracks have some kind of beat to drive them on. It's right to end the series here but I enjoyed this CD in its own right. It lacks the diversity of other CDs as all the tracks are late 60s, so no crossover modern soul sounds (which is a shame as Southern soul sounds great in the 1970s). However this isn't a casual purchase, buyers will surely know it is the very rarest of Fame which is already a fairly hardcore label for soul fans. On that basis the CD delivers however if you are dipping your toe into soul music, don't get this, get the Kent's Cellar of Soul volume 3 also released this month which is essential and a more casual introduction to great dance soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime soul as originally heard, 31 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the singles release of these early soul seminal classics. I grew up in the Mod/soul scene hearing these songs in this way. This is one of the best series of reissue soul ever and although the emphasis isn't said to be on dance soul, much more than half of the tracks are Northern Soul classics from the pure soul part of the sound. Almost all these tracks don't have stereo mixes so this is as they were meant to be heard. Buy with confidence.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lack clarity and very bassy, 23 Nov 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
These earphone follow the trend of emphasizing the bass at the expense of other frequencies, the amount of bass emphasis is ridiculous and sacrifices both middle and treble frequencies. The sound isn't anything special, lacking detail and a sense of space. The maker claims these have some air balancing technique to add spacial depth but this isn't noticeable. At a fiver these would be acceptable as a temporary replacement for broken earphones, at sixty quid they are not worth the money. The ear pieces are very big too and seem as though they will be uncomfortable over a long listen. The sound isolation is partial and the tips the usual latex design. Nothing really to recommend them and they certainly don't provide evidence of the claims made by their manufacturer.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and was unable to put it down until I'd read it. It was well written, full of emotion, touching but honest and had humour too.

Worth reading on a quiet day with the phone off and curled up on the sofa

4.0 out of 5 stars great bit of kit, 22 Oct 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I travel a lot with my work and was starting to get frustrated when the WiFi doesn't work well in many hotels. This a great bit of kit, easy to set up, easy to use, gets great connections and is easy to transport as it doesn't take up much room in my case.
I would certainly recommend it to others
