5.0 out of 5 stars A cheap, no-problem replacement, 30 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was bought to replace a previous lookalike remote control for the same tv. This one seems to be marginally better made than the previous one, which lasted only 4 months before breaking. It's far cheaper than the Sony original, so here's hoping! It worked immediately, with no hassle in setting it up. Delivery was very quick, sooner than advertised or expected, and the unit itself was securely wrapped in bubble wrap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous!, 27 Jan. 2016
I've had these scales now for over a year - they were a Christmas present from my son, and they are absolutely brilliant. The quality of both the scales and the bowl is excellent, the weighing figures are large and easy to read, you can weigh in increments of 1 gram if need be, units of measurement are grams, ounces, millilitres, and fluid ounces - all measurably accurate, the scales are very versatile - you can put practically any plate, dish or bowl on them and, having zeroed the readout, can weigh from scratch - and the scale unit itself is so light and small that it can be hidden away in a cupboard or drawer when not in use. It's such a pleasure to use something that has been so intelligently and beautifully designed. I use them every day. Wonderful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic accounts of true crime, 5 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I think the key word here is 'authentic'. The cases are authentic, the retelling is authentic - even down to the quotations in direct speech, if we are to believe the Preface, and the style is authentic of the thirties and forties. At the same time, the tales have their own intrinsic interest, and for once, one of the alleged murderers does apparently get away with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 5 Jan. 2016

Well-written, moves along at a cracking pace. The characters all have their weaknesses, which spill over into their relationships, but crucially all have a bearing on this case and its outcome. Nothing here is superfluous. It's an intelligent novel, and well worth a read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow to begin with, but then the plot really takes off, 5 Jan. 2016

This review is from: Cranberry Bluff (Kindle Edition)
This is very slow to begin with, in fact for about the first fifth I was wondering if this was going to be a mystery / detective story at all or I had blundered into a cheap romance. But then the pace quickens, and all becomes increasingly clear, culminating in the final clarification scene where things are even more intertwined than anyone could have suspected, least of all Molly the heroine. The characters are clearly delineated - too clearly, actually, but the plot just goes on becoming more and more incredible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, straightforward, entertaining, 5 Jan. 2016

No pretence of police reality here: we have a fresh-faced DI on is first day in the job on the island of Jersey, with a staff of one sergeant (female) and two constables (male). Between them (and the local pathologist), but mainly thanks to the DI working on a personal hunch and a memory revived by his idyllic surroundings, he gathers the suspects together and accuses, fortunately for him, the right one. It's been pretty obvious who this is, but nevertheless it's a pleasant, undemanding read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, thoughtful, absorbing, 5 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The storyline is complex but clearly laid out, the characters are well-rounded and all have to cope with skeletons in their past. I dd guess the perpetrator, near the end, because there wasn't anyone else left, but didn't fully appreciate the complex issues behind the murder. You will actually want to find out who did it. A thoughtful mystery tale, and well worth a read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Short and disappointing, 29 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The one good thing about this is that is short (estimated length is 32 pages). The plot is thin, the characterisation and the dialogue between the main characters is hardly credible, and the ending is, well, words fail me (for once). It's almost worth reading to see how awful it is. Almost, but not quite!

4.0 out of 5 stars Authentic accounts, written with enthusiasm and verve, 29 Dec. 2015

You need to accept these accounts on their own terms, particularly as regards the style of writing which is journalistic and dated. Nevertheless, the buoyancy of the writing carries you along to the inevitable conclusion of each case. It's enthusiastic and entertaining - and authentic!

2.0 out of 5 stars Predictable but free, 29 Dec. 2015

Not much of a story, stereotyped cardboard cut-outs for characters, banal and predictable situations. But it was free, and Christmassy in an empty-headed way, so who can object? I did finish it, out of a sense of duty, but only just.
