5.0 out of 5 stars A Winning Disc, 5 July 2012
This is probably the first,or nearly first, disc to feature a set of the Suppe overtures in their original orchestral versions. Many arrangements and mis-arrangements had previously been made and Mecury wanted to put this right and in super performances. Really, though many people look down on them, they are virtuoso pieces with quite stunning parts especially for the strings. The three Auber overtures are splendid too. In bright, excellent sound for its age and in lovely performances this disc is a winner-at whatevev price.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Disgrace, 3 July 2012
This disc is a disgrace and very expensive too. I asked for it for my birthday and I can only think of two positive things to say about it. The orchestral sound and contribution are good and the music used in the Swan Lake Grand Pas de Deux from act two is not the usual music that I am used to and very nice too.
So what is wrong?
The actual gala is billed as 83 minutes long [which is in no way generous at all, anyway] but 20 minutes of this time is taken up with no actual dancing. The introduction is a waste of good dancing time and at the end the Polonaise [S. L.] is used for the bows and the Valse [Act 2 S.L.] is used for the credits!!
If you want to see Roberto Bolle -forget it because he only appears in the afore-mentioned pas de deux.
The Adagio de Rose is very ordinary and so are the the Danse Espagnole and Tarantelle.
This Blu Ray disc is awful. I have several such discs and they are all fine but in this one the background continually blurs.
All in all very boring and not recommended at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lovely Disc, 3 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a lovely two disc-set of rare choral music by Saint-Saens.I did not know any of the music and a good review in The Guardian encouraged me to purchase the set.The music is beautifully written with great skill and it is inventive in harmony and very melodic. It is always fresh and never cloying. There is much variety in the music. The performances are superb with lovely choral singing and the sound is excellent and very natural.
I can highly recommend this disc to anyone who would like to try something a bit different.

These mats are a bit coarse but they are excellent value and great for use on the kitchen table. Highly recommended for daily use.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Unexpected Find, 26 Mar 2012
A friend was throwing this out but before he did he offered it to me. Though dramatically it is not very strong it is certainly worth seeing. The dancing is very good from the principal dancers and from the corps de ballet -and there is a large contribution from the corps de ballet.Though the last act is basically a ballroom scene the dances are superbly executed. The music of Minkus is fine in his sort of pleasing way without any real stature. The sets are good and the quality of picture and sound is very good,if not quite of Blu-Ray quality,of course.I really like this DVD and I strongly recommend it if it can be purchased at a reasonable price. Because of the pleasure it has given me I have to award this DVD 4 stars. I should add that it is all a bit frothy and camp!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pharoah's Daughter, 28 July 2011

I took a long time to decide whether to purchase the Blu-Ray DVD of this ballet.I had never heard of it nor the composer, Pugni. There will be a few times when you may well cringe or laugh but overall this is a wonderful experience and anyone interested in classical ballet should go for it.
The dancing is superb ,and, if, like me you like plenty of corps de ballet work you will not be disappointed. The seemingly cast of hundreds appear and disappear in an instance [heaven knows where they all come from or go to]! The principal dancers are wonderful. The sets are magnifcent and the costumes stunning. The story moves along quite quickly and though improbable-like all classical ballet stories-it is entertaining.
So what about the music of poor old third rate composer Cesare Pugni? [He must be third rate if he trails behind even second rate well known composers.]In fact it is all really quite nice.True, one or two items are a bit ordinary and some dances very short-the fault of Petipa actually, but much is tuneful and weighty. The music to the mime scenes is very passionate [Go to track 19 for example] and in the final pas de deux and the scene that concludes the ballet Pugni comes up with a winner [though we have heard this theme when Aspicia comes to life at the beginning].
Svetlana Zakharova and Sergei Filin are wonderful to watch and breathe life in to their Characters.
There is a feeling of great satisfaction at the end,and a desire to watch it all through again-right away!

The Loose Screw: The Shocking Truth About Our Prison System

4.0 out of 5 stars Loose Screw Review, 4 Dec 2010

This is an autobiographical book and some of the author's drinking exploits become rather boring but overall I warmed very much to him and his style of writing. Jim Dawkins is very truthful about prison life and his own life, and he gives us a very candid insight in to prison life which through his eyes is very shocking and worrying.I am sure that what he says is true, and depending on one's own view of what our prisons should be doing to its inmate population, the reader will decide what is reasonable treatment or not.To my mind the system is riddled with abuse. The prison service have a duty to the public and to the inmates also, and to my mind wherever possible to rehabilitate and help as many inmates as possible.
The reader should know that a large part of the book concerns Dawkins own life, and it takes a while to actually get in to prison proper. It is at times sad, very funny and very revealing, and always very readable. I can recomend this book to anyone who is interested in our prison service. I shall read this book again in a few months' time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bizet symphony in C, 4 Nov 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bizet's lovely symphony is given a fine performance here. It is a work full of Mediterranean sun and many beautiful touches. He wrote it when he was 17 and just put it to one side and it was not performed until 60 years later, long after his death. Each movement is a delight but the slow movement is just exquisite. The other items are good, too, and the rarely heard 'Roma' is certainly worth hearing though it is not as memorable as the other two works recorded here.It has a lovely introduction. With fine performances, good sound and fresh, inspired music this disc is a winner.

I bought this to replace a model that I had had for 10 years and had served me well. That model was far more expensive.Unlike that model the controls and window are not on the top,nor as convenient, but I soon adapted to the new model.Perhaps the batteries are more fiddly to replace but the battery playing time is incredible [like with the previous model] so I do not need to change them often. The sound is excellent[even better than the other]:beautifully clear and detailed. The bass enhancement does not muddy the sound quality at all which is often not the case. There is an incredible amount of volume and I usually have it set at 4 whereas with my previous model I had it set at 7 and above always. This is an excellent piece of equipment and I am delighted with it.I can recommend it whole heartedly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rubinstein 1 and 2, 28 July 2010
This review is from: Piano Concerti 1 & 2 (Audio CD)
These concertos are well worth getting to know, though they are rather long and,at times,a little tedious. The coda to the finale of concerto no.1 is very overblown in a vulgar sort of way,for example. But,there is much to enjoy and they can be recommended to those who like big romantic piano concertos.I have only given this disc 3 stars because in comparison to those concertos by other romantic composers on the fringe[and Rubinstein's own no. 4]they fair less well. They are rarities and hardly ever recorded and it is good to be able to listen to them. The sound and performances are perfectly acceptable.
