2.0 out of 5 stars Kings Man, 18 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I liked this first book in the series (Outlaw) and therfore was looking forward to having this book as a good holiday read. However, to my disappointment, it has left me cold. The writing quality seems to lack the discriptive flair of the previous novel and seems rushed and basic in comparison to other recent books that I have read. While the book is not terrible and the tale and premise are adequate, there's not enough here for me to recommend wholeheartedly. So maybe it the case that just like watching an excellent movie followed by an average one the latter seems poorer than it actually is however with other better novels out there I would see this as more a last resort and see to reading the Bernard Cornwall books which are a btter realised example of this type of literature or buy for something slightly different look at Joe Abercrombie or George R R Martin whose writing skills seems to make this pale in comparision.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short, Sharp, Sweet and Shocking- The best brit flick of the year!, 28 July 2009
This review is from: Hush [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Well, contray to the other viewer who obviously wasn't watching the same film, I thought Hush was a very effective thriller and worked wonders with an incredibly limited budget. It's an entertaining, low-budget thriller in the vain of The Hitcher. The acting although not brilliant at times, befits the films tone and improves as the action unfolds. Starts interesting, then explodes into action as the film progresses and keeps you on the edge of your seat, despite an incredibly predicatble ending. I mean, what other film has the gran from benidorm as a terrified pensioner!
All in all, good fun and well worth a watch!
P.s- I won't be visiting any service stations on the M1 any time soon!

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh Dear!!, 3 July 2009
This review is from: Knowing [Blu-ray] [2009] (Blu-ray)
I alwasy like to start on a positive so.... Well i'm struggling to think of anything positive to say about this absolute turkey of a film. The first twenty minutes are watchable, just! An interesting story with passable special effects makes you think that it might be alright. It isn't. Nicolas Cage outdoes his reputation with some of the worst acting i have ever seen. (Happy, Sad, hand in a burning wreck, his expression never changes. Although, i suppose his blank otherworldliness befits the film's 'twist.') The rest of the cast isn't much better with the excellent Rose Byrne from Damages not being utillised to her obvious potntial. The ending is appalling and completely unexplained. The scenario leading up to the end is given very little explanation and just confuses the viewer. It ends up seeming like a cheap copy of an M. Night Shalaman Film (which aren't very good anyway!) This ranks as one of the worst films I have ever had the misfourtune to watch and couldn't wait for it to end! Nicolas Cage is going through the motions here and his lack of acting effort reflects on the film as a whole. Avoid!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece. (And Stunning Ending!!), 27 Oct. 2008
Wow! If one word describes The Mist's ability to shock and scare the watcher then this is it. Contrary to some reviews I believe the script is very well thought out and interesting showing what happens when society breaks down and although the special effects start out a little bit on the cheap side they get better and better including a stunning sequence involving flying bugs. Unlike other horror movies it does sort of touch upon why it's happening and has an absolutely amazing ending that no-one would see coming. The americans didn't like the shock ending but is in complete contrast to other god awful endings. (No Country for old men and There will be Blood being prime examples!) This is a demonstration of how you end a film in style. It will leave you gobsmacked. This is not only the best horror movie of the year, it's the best of the current generation and possibly one of the best ever. Refreshing, original and supported by a truly remarkable cast including the brilliant Marcia Gay Harden, this holds it's own with Frank Darabont's other classics The Shawshank Redemption and the Green Mile. Brilliant!

2.0 out of 5 stars You'll like it if you like this sort of thing, 22 Aug. 2008
Hmmm.... Where to start. Mamma Mia, from a film prospective is quite possibly the worst film i have ever seen. The acting is wooden, which, from an amazingly talented cast is unforgivable, the direction is nowhere near tight enough and the plot is contrived and the script is poorly thought out. If you've seen the trailers then you've seen pretty much all this film has to offer from a cinematic viewpoint. However, if you're an abba fan or have seen the musical before then you're guaranteed to join the millions who already like it and have sold out the cinema screnns for the past month. Unfortunately there is very little coherence to anything the film does and feels more like a way to fit a stage musical on screen instead of adapting it for the cinema audience. An example of this is the way extras are worked into the musical pieces with 'Lay all your love on me' having men in filppers and snorkels emerging out of the sea. Not good! If you want to see a film musical, watch Dreamgirls, it's better from a cinematic viewpoint. If you like Abba, buy a CD and save money. However if you like the musical go and watch it, unfortunately it's not the big screen escapde fans were hoping for with comedy and abba music. As it is it's a barely competent attempt to squeeze a musical onto the big screen. But maybe it's a women's thing as the applause behind me in the cinema will attest to.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ace Fun!, 28 May 2008
This review is from: Fantastic 4 [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This is not meant to be an acting masterclass. It is sheer fun and the whole family will enjoy it. For starters the picture in Blu Ray is Phenomenal and I have found myself watching it with friends and family four times to demonstrate the wonders of Blu. Also the storyline and acting aren't nearly as bad as some reviews would tell you. Yes, its predictable but at the end of the day its aimed a kids first and adults second. Both myself and my children throughly enjoyed this film and its sequel and they both come highly recommended to show off Blu Ray.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Pleasant, 31 Jan. 2008
Oh Dear, I had great hopes for this film and to be fair the first half an hour is quite an funny, if not original, Rom-com. Then it turns. The whole idea with the heartbreak kid is to make the wife seem like a horror and it does so in crude and horrible fashion through a series of graphic sex scenes more suited to a porn video than a Ben Stiller film. It's embarassing to watch and wholly unessecary as the film is alright without it. For this reason alone. Avoid at all Costs!!!!
