Snake Oil: How Fracking's False Promise of Plenty Imperils Our Future

Do you believe all the fracking hype? If so, read this and think again. So-called 'fracking' and 'shale oil/gas' are supposed to be America's miracle cure for its energy needs. If you believe the pundits, it has allowed the US to achieve energy independence once again.

This excellent book says different, and it all comes down to something called EROEI. The truth is that the fracking boom is actually a bubble waiting to burst, just like the sub prime mortgages fad before it. It certainly isn't the cure to climate change nor the peak oil issue that seems to have been forgotten about in recent years. Not only are there environmental risks, but the economic benefits that have been touted are really hollow and self-deluding.

Fracking is merely just about putting off the inevitable, it's far from being the answer. The UK PM, his ministers and the right-wing press believe that it will be the miracle cure to our energy needs too, just as in the US. They should read this book (although I won't hold my breath!)

4.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring idea!, 3 Aug. 2013

This book was one that was recommended to me on my Kindle and it hit a resonance with me straight away! I was already conducting a 30 Day Challenge after an inspiring TED talk given by Matt Cutts from Google. The idea of a 30 Day Goal Machine was intriguing so I had to investigate...

I was not dissapointed. The book is a concise and fairly well-written guide on how to use a '30 Day Goal Machine' to supercharge your goals. This was essentially a case of using a simple notebook as a journal in order to record your wants, ideas, strategies and achievements throughout the process of a 30 Day goal. The type of goal you set can be for anything over the 30 day period. Of course, you have to be realistic about what you can achieve in that given perod. For instance, you are probablynot going to make a million in 30 days (unless you are some super-whizzkid speculator or something!) However, if you are aiming for that as long term business goal, then the author's point is that you can use the 30 Day Goal Machine to make a significant dent in it. The whole book is written around this premise, with some useful tips on questions you can pose to yourself in your journal as well as some good case studies to illustrate the usefulness of the process.

I think the book could benefit from summaries at the end of each chapter, as well as a list of the actions you could take at the conclusion to assist in refreshing the memory. Apart from this (and some typos!), this is a good little e-book and worth the 77p price.

I like the idea so much, I've incorporated the journal into my latest 30 Day Challenge. I look forward to the results!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice little book!, 27 April 2013

I've found this to be one of the most inspiring little ebooks since having been given my Kindle. Why? Well, I've been reading a bit of stuff about the law of attraction for a while (including the work of Dr Joe Vitale) and I've found all it to be completely fascinating. However, what I really like about this is the 'twist' Mathew talks about. That is, attracting for others. This is something that appeals to me totally, as I think there's no better way to adjust yourself to the vibrations of universal source than by being completely unselfish and attracting for others. I'm certainly going to try this out. Thank you, Mathew!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice intro to LOA, 2 Mar. 2013

A good little intro to the law of attraction through the concept of Universal Magic. It certainly has helped me to think positively. The idea of expunging all negativity from your consciousness is something really worth focussing on. To be honest, what's there to lose? Only misery, and what use is that? Give it a try isn't recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for discovering ebook ideas, 29 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Steve Scott has written an excellent guide for generating eBook ideas. It's one thing to, write an eBook and put it on Amazon Kindle. It's another to publish one that people will actually want to buy and read, thus plead I by t o increased sales for the author. The approach which Steve takes is that of affiliate marketer. In this respect, he recommends in-depth research into hot topics which are selling before even writing your eBook. In order to do this, he recommends using research tools external to Amazon such as Clickbank and EZA before even attempting to use the Amazon 'hacks' to identify hot topics. By following this strategy, the reader should have a good grounding on what will sell and what will not. With the additional tools he recommends and the writing methods he suggests, the reader should adopt a folkloric method of producing quality books which will also sell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Internet Marketing, 8 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As someone who has tried Internet Marketing in the past and not really passed go, this book is an excellent guide for anyone who wants to know how to succeed in this field of marketing. Greg and Fiona Scott have been there and done it in terms of both the pitfalls and the successes. As their book relates, they are two ordinary people who had high flying careers but suddenly found themselves on the sharp end of redundancy. As a result of this, they decided to explore Internet Marketing as a line of business, something they had a strong interest in already. However, as they explain, they soon found it to be a steep learning curve with many new things to learn. All the same, with a great deal of persistence, hard-work and positive thinking, they were able to overcome any initial pitfalls (and, heaven knows, Internet Marketing is a minefield!) and go on to grow a successful business in a relatively short space of time.

In telling their story of how they did it themselves, they provide a very honest account of the problems they encountered and provide some excellent advice to the reader on how to build a profitable lifestyle business online the right way. They don't assume a great deal of prior knowledge. In fact, they approach the subject from the point of view of a total layman. So if you are a bit of technophobe and are put off by the perceived complexity of the internet, don't be - because this book explains a lot on how anybody can utilise the power of the internet without needing to be Bill Gates! Greg and Fiona cover the basics and recommend some excellent tools which you can use to keep your business self-sustaining. They also provide access to some online extras (such as links to videos) which can help guide you as well. As well as the technical stuff, there is some great advice on self-motivational techniques to keep you focused on your goals. At the end of the day, I believe that focus is the most important aspect of any business.

There are many charlatans and rip-off merchants out there in the field of internet marketing. Greg and Fiona are certainly not among them. They have been on the receiving end themselves and this, again, is apparent in the book. They display a genuine willingness to want to help others to achieve the goals which they have, and this is certainly refreshing.

Thoroughly recommended for anyone looking to get into internet business and to obtain a laptop lifestyle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Focus!!, 2 Mar. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There are many self-help and motivational books on the market at present, but I would say whole-heartedly that 'Focus' is the best I have ever picked-up. I was already aware of NLP as a system of self-improvement before purchasing this book, and I was most pleased to see that it incorporated ideas and principles from this system, as well as many other techniques which, if used and applied to good effect, can make a difference to a lot of aspects of your life. Although I am currently in a full-time job, I am in the process of writing a novel and I also have other long term goals which I wish to fulfil. Consequently, Jurgen's guidance has already helped me on the way to achieving them.

What is particularly good about this guide is that it takes a step-by-step approach to self-development, which means that you can begin applying the principles (such as 80/20) straight away before you have even completed the book. There are many exercises which help you to learn and develop the principles which Jurgen shows you, and which can, via regular repetition and habit forming, help you to reach your aims. What I also found impressive is the fact that each chapter is linked to a website from which the reader can access and obtain further info and self-development aids, such as guided visualisations for your MP3 player, audio or video interviews and other downloads, and these then supplement what you have learnt in each chapter. This is particularly innovative, as it draws on the NLP principles of visual and auditory stimulus in order to facilitate change and development. I still use these add-ons regularly.

The book then concludes with a section which basically involves a review of all the subjects covered in the chapters, which is a particularly helpful revision aide and consolidates everything the reader has learnt.

In summary, I would thoroughly recommend this to any-one who is wanting to make changes in their life and who aims to achieve success in the areas which they are pursuing. In fact, I couldn't really get enough of this book, and I hope Jurgen is planning a sequel at some time!!
