I'm always a little wary of buying clothing online. With football or rugby jerseys the sizing changes dependant on the manufacturer. Thankfully this England rugby shirt fits a treat and was delivered in good time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un-missable, 20 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Prisoners [DVD] (DVD)
This is one of those movies where when you leave the cinema you've already decided to buy the dvd as soon as it is released.
Jake Gyllenhaal is masterful as the edgy cop, detective Loki and Paul Dano shows his immense talent as the imprisoned, Alex Jones. I feel that Hugh Jackman is guilty of over-acting a little in this picture. This is real edge of your seat stuff and It's dreary setting provides no comfort, but goes hand and hand with the narrative. This film may not be for those faint of heart but should be a must see for most viewers

2.0 out of 5 stars Monumental failure, 18 Feb. 2014
This review is from: The Monuments Men [DVD] (DVD)
The film opens with the coming together of the seven monument men, it was a cross between 'Kelly's Heroes' & 'The 'Magnificent Seven'. The big difference was instead of the muscular physique of Bronson or the cool chique of McQueen, you get John Goodman & Bill Murray.
I was so disappointed with this slushy effort by Clooney & co. I decided to watch this movie because of my fondness for the work
of Murray & Kate Blanchett. Bill Murray was much under-used in this supposed comedy, and I'm very surprised that Kate Blanchett would appear in such a half-baked effort. Her accent reminded me of Yvette in 'Allo 'Allo, I was waiting for Rene to appear from ze café !! I've come to the conclusion that Jean Dujardin should stick to silent movies.
This selection of ageing characters are tasked with saving precious works of art from the Nazis as they retreated through France & Belgium. This is neither a drama or comedy, I would find it difficult to put this picture into any genre or persuade anybody to sit through it. That's two hours of my life that I'll never get back.

August: Osage County [DVD]
August: Osage County [DVD]
Dvd ~ Meryl Streep

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb Dark Comedy, 12 Feb. 2014
This review is from: August: Osage County [DVD] (DVD)
"August: Osage County" is a character driven picture with stand-out performances by all the female actors. This movie charts the trials & tribulations of the Weston family from the plains of Osage County Oklahoma. Meryl Streep will rightly receive all the plaudits for another memorable performance but the three daughters played by Julia Roberts (Barbara), Julianne Nicholson (Ivy) and Juliette Lewis (Karen) were amazing. Julia Roberts' best performance since 'Brockovich', Julianne & Juliette were outstanding in their understated support of the two lead women.

This movie is both enjoyable & difficult to watch. I defy anyone, watching the funeral dinner scene, not to identify one of these characters from their own family. This film has everything, suicide, incest, infidelity, drug abuse, alcoholism...what more do you want.

It was a shame that's Streep's character (Violet) disappeared half way through the film only to emerge near the end. Brits Ewan McGregor & Benedict Cumberbatch have bit parts in this stellar ensemble. I particularly enjoyed the performance of Chris Cooper and his interaction with Margo Martindale. The scene when Cooper has had enough of his wife's criticism of her son is a tear jerker

5.0 out of 5 stars compelling movie..., 16 July 2006
This review is from: JFK [1992] [DVD] (DVD)
Even if you know nothing about the whole Kennedy era, you'll enjoy this most compelling movie. November 22nd 1963 must be perceived as a turning point which led toward the decline in fortunes of the world's most powerful nation.

Oliver Stone's screenplay is based on two books - "On the trail of the assassins" by Jim Garrison and "Crossfire: The plot that killed Kennedy" by Jim Marrs. The production/direction team of Oliver Stone and A. Kitman Ho has brought us Born on the fourth of July, Wall Street and Platoon. This film was a major contributor in the passage of the 1992 Assassination Materials Disclosure Act. This is a controversial and powerful account of the assassination of the thirty fifth US president John F. Kennedy.

The dominant character is supreme chief justice Jim Garrison played by Kevin Costner. I personally have never been a fan of his efforts(The Postman, Dances with wolves and Bull Durham)I always found much of his work to be self indulgent.

Kevin Costner is excellent, i especially enjoy his summing up at the trial. Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Oldman also put in sterling performances. This movie also contains a plethora of "A" list actors including Kevin Bacon, Jack Lemmon, John Candy and Walter Matthau but my favourite characters are David Ferrie played by Joe Pesci and Agent X played by Donald Sutherland. Ferrie was a right-wing activist who was involved with the CIA in a plot to kill the president in retaliation for his attempts to obtain a peace settlement in both Cuba and Vietnam. Pesci's portrayal was both manic and comedic. My favourite quote was attributed to Ferrie "it's a mystery wrapped in riddle inside an inigma". Sutherland played a mysterious Washington intelligence officer who spoke of links to the military-industrial complex in relation to Kennedy's assassination. There should also be a mention for Jay O. Sanders who plays investigator Lou Ivon and Michael Rooker who plays lawyer Bill Broussard.

The movie also has shocking footage of the 8mm film shot by Abraham Zapruder which confirms the existance of another shooter in Dealey Plaza, on the grassy knoll. JFK rightfully won oscars for cinematography and film editing and I for one think it's Oliver Stone's best work.I would recommend anybody to watch this film.
