5.0 out of 5 stars Classy strap, 5 Feb 2013

As a creature of habit, I'm used to a leather strap on my wristwatch. I always choose Apollo straps because they are well made and last a long time.

It's All About the Bike: The Pursuit of Happiness On Two Wheels
It's All About the Bike: The Pursuit of Happiness On Two Wheels
by Robert Penn
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars A light read, 13 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this on the recommendation of a friend expecting it to add more detail to Rob's interesting TV documentary. Which one is a spin-off from the other is unclear. To be honest, there wasn't a lot more to discover though it was still an entertaining read with some reminders of the history of the various component makers. As you'd expect, by far the most interesting is the story of the frame from consultation to eventual colour scheme. In all, the book feels like an appetiser for a main course. Perhaps an A-Z of frame-smiths from up and down the country - what makes them tick and their response to different materials. Robert's enthusiasm for the all steel frame shines out and he'd have an eager readership.

5.0 out of 5 stars Skype headset for Mac, 10 July 2012

Despite a resistance to all things Microsoft, I decided to try these out as a Skype headset on a Mac Mini running OS 10.4 Tiger. They work straight out of the box, plug and play USB. Sound is pretty good too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for the money, 1 Feb 2012

I'm sure you can get a hard banjo case which is a better build quality than this one, but to protect an entry-level 5 string Washburn B9, this is ideal. The padded plush lining is a nice luxury touch and the 4-point latch fastening (one with a keyed lock) means you'd have to be really careless for the instrument to fall out in transit. It is quite heavy and, added to the weight of the banjo, make this unweildy to carry very far. There's an internal lidded compartment for tuning pipe, fingerpicks, spare strings etc. And the neck cradle means the regular tuning heads can't come into contact with the sides of the case. New, there's very little movement of the banjo withing the case. As the padding gets compressed, it may become a looser fit, but the black, fake-fur lining should cope with protecting the finish and structure of the banjo pretty well. For general hauling around, a gig-bag backpack would be more ergonomic but for everyday storage, this case does the job well. Oh, and there are studs on the base when flat or on edge to protect the leather-look finish of the case. And finally, the off-centre handle makes the case terrible to carry when empty, but it all palsnces out with the banjo on board!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet as a nut, 7 Nov 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I only wanted the nut from this set, so can't comment on the saddle insert. After cleaning up the spot where the old, broken nut had been removed from, I super-glued this one in place. Luckily it was a perfect replacement fit in both with and string height (action) for a very old, very battered and otherwise unusable guitar. Newly restrung, it is now teaching my son how to play. Result. NOTE: measure your original first. The advertised measurements are spot-on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet sounding strings, 7 Nov 2011

This review is from: Aquila Soprano Uke strings
The other reviews were right. These strings make a 'budget' Mahalo ukulele sound a million times better. I tried to get them from the local music shop, but the chap there said they couldn't get them in stock, except on new ukes. They arrived very quickly and with a little pre-tensioning, hold their tuning well after a day or so.

1.0 out of 5 stars Burned out case, 7 Nov 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Warning: do not buy this adaptor. Our house circuits are protected by Residual Current Devices (trip switches). I woke this morning to find out upstairs sockets all tripped, no idea why. Later this evening, my son presented me with the USB power adaptor saying it doesn't work. It smelled of burnt plastic. I opened the casing by undoing the little screw to reveal the cause of this mornings tripped switch. The unit had burned out. Mystery solved. This is a serious fault. It is normal for any power adaptor to get a little warm, but this could have caused a house fire if the house circuit hadn't tripped.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smear-free cleaner, 5 Sep 2011

This review is from: Hama Lens Cleaning Pen (Accessory)
Normally I keep a UV filter on my lenses so can afford to be pretty brutal cleaning them up - a mist of breath and the corner of a T-shirt to wipe it. With my new wide-angle lens, the filter performs the same function, except when I need to remove it to use the lens hood. Not doing removing the filter leads to slight vignetting, even though the filter ring is only a slim 3mm deep. The pen seems to work a treat. I guess there's some sort of fluid in the cap and I'm not sure how long it will last, but it seems to be effective so far. Works well on the eyepiece too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Snug fit, 10 Aug 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
When you get a lens bag, it needs to fit all the lenses in your bag, unless you customarily carry your camera with a body cap and no lens. With my 3 lens system, I only need 2 bags as one lens is always on the camera. Thus, a bag needs to fit all three. The measurements for this bag are a little on the skimpy side, so you might want to consider getting the next size up if unsure. This one fits a Tamron SP 10-24 with 77mm dia. filter (not hood!). An AFS Nikkor 18-55 and an AFS Nikkor 55-200 (with hood attached), each with 52mm filter threads. Actual measurements of the bag I received are: Height 140mm overall. Diameter 97mm.

5.0 out of 5 stars No vignetting on wide angle, except with lenshood, 10 Aug 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought the 77mm UV to protect my new Tamron SP 10-24mm DiII wide angle zoom. I have tested it at the extremes of zoom and aperture to see if the filter ring encroaches in the image area - good news is, it doesn't without the lens hood. WITH the Tamron-supplied lens hood attached, there is some very slight darkening at the corners at 10mm, more noticeable at f3.5 than f22. This was when tested on a plain white background. Hardly noticable at all in a general scene. Obviously, the filter ring being about 3mm deep, the laws of physics can't be avoided. Glad I didn't spend 30 on something more expensive. Optically, you don't notice it is there.
