4.0 out of 5 stars Good book but old-fashioned language., 8 July 2014

This book is very interesting and useful. Having practised a fair amount of meditation from Eastern traditions it is nice to see that the same practices and insights also have a Western tradition.

The only problem with this book is that it is quite old, therefore the language is quite old-fashioned. At times this can make it a little difficult to follow but definitely worth the effort.

One last thing to note, it isn't as practical as the title suggests but I would still recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but wasn't exactly what I was looking for, 6 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an enjoyable novel that is fairly well written. It is clearly written by someone who knows a lot about Chinese medicine, martial arts and religion. However I was looking for a story based more in the real world with only a few mystical elements, like 'Chronicles of Tao'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but a little strange in places, 6 May 2014

Overall this was a good book that provides a change to all of the 'how to' Shiatsu and Oriental medicine books out there. I enjoyed it but it gets a little too 'alternative' for me in some places.

This review is from: Chojun: A Novel (Kindle Edition)
This was such a good novel. I think it would appeal to anyone interested in traditional martial arts, WW2 in Asia or Japan/Okinawa in general. It is a very well written book that is easy to read. You will find that hours just disappear after you open this book.

A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy
A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy
Price: £7.18

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book that puts forward Stoicism in a way that's useful for modern readers, 24 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found this book very useful and informative. So previous reviewers have given it a low score because it doesn't stick 100% to historical Stoicism. From my point of with the deviation is small and for the better.

4.0 out of 5 stars I found this book very useful, 24 Mar. 2014

I'm currently study the Trinity dip.TESOL and found this book very useful for the technology in ESL section. However it isn't sufficient on its own and could do with a little more information on specific tools that are available.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing special but worth a read, 20 Aug. 2013

This book is good enough, but all of the information can be found on the Internet for free. That being said its not expensive and is a well written, easy read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book for Zen or Pure Land practitioners., 20 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having started out in Zen when I was in the UK; I now go on retreats at a Pure Land temple here in China. This book was a good bridge for the two traditions. It more or less only uses translations of old teachers to show that both can, and perhaps should, be practiced together.

The reason I didn't give it five stars is that I felt it needed more from a modern practitioners point of view; there is no commentary or explanation of these old writings.

That aside, I recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very interesting book, 19 Aug. 2013

This book is great for anyone who dreams of escaping the rat race. It deals with both people who want out permanently and those who just want an easy Eco-escape. There are parts that drag on or don't really add anything to the book overall. But these are rare and the book is well written with lots of useful information.
