Butler of Ormonde (The Gentry & Aristocracy of Kilkenny)
Butler of Ormonde (The Gentry & Aristocracy of Kilkenny)
Price: £7.46

3.0 out of 5 stars I have not yet received the hard copy of Butler of Ormonde and have only read it on kindle!, 6 Dec. 2015

While the content was informative, in the kindle edition, the footnotes intruded on the text and it took a certain amount of effort to find the text. Otherwise, I now know a great deal more about the Butlers of Ormonde than previously.

I rarely laugh out loud when reading but Maeve's brilliant summing up of situations almost always giving them a very humourous twist had me giggling with delight. Please could we have more from her writings! I grew up when she did and , therefore, can appreciate the ambience she describes with such accuracy but feel this collection will appeal to readers of all ages.

A great new addition to the 'detective' ranks and far better than the latest JK Rowling. The milieu is interesting and the characters develop as the plot thickens. I look forward to a sequel or two

The Road Less Travelled: Special Edition
The Road Less Travelled: Special Edition
by M. Scott Peck
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Memories, 10 Sept. 2013

As I purchased this book to give to a young man on his way to college for the first time, it brought back memories for Scott Peck dated me for a couple of weeks during my first year in college. When his book came out 18 years later, I found it very much to the point and helpful for dealing with the daily situations in life. Emphasising personal responsibility in all things, it gave a guideline for life.

The English used for this novel so rightly reflected the subject matter. When the prodigal son returns to assist his family in looking after his estranged and dying father, the baggage of the family situation is almost oppressive. The prose is flat, direct and evocative of the mood members of such a family would experience. Add in the location on the borders of Northern Ireland and you would understand why there are no humourous anecdotes or even light hearted banter. That said, it is a good story, well told and one to which many readers could relate. I do hope that Bethany Dawson will find a more uplifting subject matter next time
