1.0 out of 5 stars Waster of money if you have the Mammoth vesion., 30 Sept. 2015

This is identical to the 2001 Mammoth Book of Best New SF. A waste of money if you already have the letter! Amazon really should start picking up on these duplicates.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could do better, 4 July 2014

Not very impressed. I've read all of TP's novels and I just don't hear his voice and style in this book. It's very sad. The story is moderately interesting but much of it is simply descriptions of various "earths" in a long series of earths.

The use of english is often stilted and there are far too many instances of the same word being used in adjacent sentences, as if the writer had not read through what he had written before starting off again with the same thoughts inhis mond.

Disappointing

5.0 out of 5 stars The best collection I've read, 4 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an outstanding "best" collection - 2013 must have been a great year. Every story (except perhaps the last two or three) was a really good read. I expected the quality to drop off after a while, but it just kept on coming, more and more fascinating worlds and characters, each stroy a winner.

It's only when you compare it with other collections (some of them very patchy) that you realise what a good one 26 is.

And excellent value for money

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful (and free!), 14 Oct. 2013

This is a delightful short story which knits together the various characters in Elly's previous books into a coherent and satisfying tale. 60% of the content is a taster for her 4th Ruth Gallowaw book, but since the story is free, that really does not detract from the content.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but very predictable, 9 July 2013

Larry Niven "couldn't write War" we are told. So various acolytes have tried to write Niven stories with war in them. I suppose it works after a fashion but in this volume the endless battles just got boring and the emnities between human factions predictable and frankly childish.

Niven's books were enthralling enough without the blood and guts. His collaborations are in my opinion far weaker than his solo efforts (the militarism in the Motie books is just laughable, really).

Won't be tempted again

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing, 9 July 2013

I felt that this book lost it's way. The superb opening concept of the nested worlds and the stepping between them doesn't really develop and I thought some of the characterisation (the US President for example) was flat and unconvincing.

And what "war"? In the Long Earth we were brought to expect a much more serious threat to humanity was lurking beyond the High Meggas. Perhaps that's going to be in the next book.

Walk! The Isle of Wight (2nd edition)
Walk! The Isle of Wight (2nd edition)
by Martin Simons
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal walking guide, 9 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'm a Walk! fan, having used their Tenerife, Mallorca and Lanzarote books and maps for a number of years. This was the first time I have used one of their UK volumes.

The mapping (OS 1:25,000 reduced to 1:30,000) is not as clear as the Brawn's own cartography but unless we are willing to stump up for new surveying, I suppose we shouldn't grumble too much.

The selection of walks is good and includes a wide variety of terrain, difficulty and length to suit most walkers. The author is too free with his superlatives and the use of "we" (as in "we turn right at the next fingerpost") gets tedious. What's wrong with "Turn right at the next fingerpost"?

The photographs are very good; clear sharp and informative.

The format of the book follows the familiar house style with text wrapped around map segments. The relevant map is almost always paired with the related text - a significant achievement! The book' page size is long and thin (210 x 120mm) I would prefer a less skinny format to make it more pocket-friendly, but this is just personal preference.

Well worth the 4 stars.

Mike

3.0 out of 5 stars Joni at the end of her glorious career, 8 Jun. 2013

This review is from: Shine (Audio CD)
If you are looking for Joni at her best, look elsewhere. I found this a bit baggy and without the crisp, clear musicality and the intense emotion of the best work. I'm Joni's biggest fan but this one was not for me.

Saves all that messing about with different roll sizes in the supermarket. This one takes all sizes, is easy to put up and use and won't snap off in your hand like the plastic ones.
